By contrast, when Jesus took them to agony in the garden, He had to ask them: “Could you not watch one hour with me?” We revel in the glory (“It is wonderful for us to be here!”) but we so often revile the suffering. Yet both are part of our Christian journey. The Father’s command, “Listen to Him!”, is perhaps relevant advice to us during our Lenten journey. We might not be able to watch for ‘one hour ‘ but perhaps we can spend a little time each day in quiet watching and listening to the Word as we prepare for Easter. JESUS AND THE DISCIPLES ENCOUNTERED THE GLORY OF GOD ON A MOUNTAIN. LENT IS AN OPPORTUNITY TO SEEK THE FACE OF GOD MORE DEEPLY. THE CALL TO BE REQUIRES US TO STOP, BREATHE, LISTEN AND LEARN.

Lent in the Year of MercyLent in the Year of MercyLent in the Year of MercyLent in the Year of Mercy

Today’s gospel relates the experience of a personal encounter with the divine. Jesus reveals his true identity to his chosen companions but also his destiny, the ‘passing over’ of his death and resurrection by which his divinity will be revealed to all. Peter misunderstands and thinks the event on the mountain is the end of the story. As a

Christian, one cannot simply remain on the mountain in contemplation of divinity, one must also take the earthly road of living the faith to its ultimate conclusion.

Ponder/Reflect/Mediate This gospel emphasises the need to withdraw for prayer.

How important is quiet contemplation and prayer in my

journey?

Is it good for me to spend time with God? Do I enjoy being

in God’s presence?

In what ways do I balance prayer and action in living my

faith?

Act: Find five minutes each day to be alone with God. • Remember the poor and marginalized that are helped through the work of Caritas Australia & give generously to Project Compassion

Share your knowledge of the Faith—attend prayer and reflection nights this Lent to learn and share your faith with others.

Prayer: God, help me to keep climbing the mountain of life. Show me the path of quiet solitude. Compassionate and loving God, open my mind and heart so that I may continue this Lenten journey with insight and discernment. Amen

The Journey continues ...The Journey continues ...The Journey continues ...The Journey continues ... In Luke’s Gospel one of the constants on the ‘Jesus journey’ is prayer. It is prayer that sustains Jesus right to his very last breath. Luke places the transfiguration of Jesus at a pivotal point in his Good News. From here on, the journey of Jesus is focused on one destination - Jerusalem.

SECOND SUNDAY OF LENT (YEAR C)

Gospel— Luke: 9: 28-36 As Jesus prayed, the aspect of his face was changed, and his clothing became brilliant as lightning. Jesus took with him Peter and John and James and went up the mountain to pray. As he prayed, the aspect of his face was changed and his clothing became brilliant as lightning. Suddenly there were two men there talking to him; they were Moses and Elijah appearing in glory, and they were speaking of his passing which he was to accomplish in Jerusalem. Peter and his companions were heavy with sleep, but they kept awake and saw his glory and the two men standing with him. As these were leaving him, Peter said to Jesus, ‘Master, it is wonderful for us to be here; so let us make three tents, one for you, one for Moses and one for Elijah.’ – He did not know what he was saying. As he spoke, a cloud came and covered them with shadow; and when they went into the cloud the disciples were afraid. And a voice came from the cloud saying, ‘This is my Son, the Chosen One. Listen to him.’ And after the voice had spoken, Jesus was found alone. The disciples kept silence and, at that time, told no one what they had seen.
