Tenth Sunday In Ordinary Time June 5, 2016

From the Desk of Fr. Bismarck MASS INTENTIONS

Ordinary Time, not so Ordinary Do you know why a part of the Church’s liturgical calendar is called ordinary? It is called Ordinary Time simply because each Week is numbered. The Latin word ordinalis, which refers to numbers in a series, stems from the Latin word ordo which means order. Ordinary time refers also to the period of the Catholic Church that falls outside of the major seasons such as Advent, Christmas, Lent and Easter. Ordinary does not refer to the parts of the Church that are unimportant, on the contrary, many important Feasts and Saints are celebrated during this time. We also read about the various miracles Jesus preformed during his ministry on earth. Hence ordinary time is more than extraordinary. Today’s Gospel of the 10th week in ordinary time is an example of the extraordinary work of Jesus, but what is more amazing in this story is that Jesus restores the dignity of this woman by giving him back her only son. Why is this act amazing? Widows were considered outcasts in the time of Jesus. They were seen as a burden for society. Any time a woman lost her husband, she also lost her name and status unless she had a son, because a son would carry the family’s name and possessions. Imagine then this woman, a widow and now she loosest her only son, what a misery for her. She would be now forced to beg on the streets for food and shelter. Jesus sees her misery and feels pity on her and tells her “Do not weep” and brings her son back to life and re-stores her dignity as a daughter of God. You are a Child of God, call upon him today and offer him your misery. Ask him to transform your sorrow into joy; your tears into gladness and to give you life as only He knows how to give it.

MOMENTS OF MERCY

MAY 2016

The prayers we offer have a great impact on our lives and the lives of those around us. In some situations, the most we can do for someone is to pray for them, especially if they live far away from us. However, prayer is by no means the least of what we do. It is powerful and effective! One way we can pray for those in need is by praying with the Blessed Virgin Mary and asking her to pray for us (MV, no. 24). There are many prayers that are part of the Church's tradition that help us pray with Mary. In living out God's mercy this month, every time you pray one of these prayers, pray it with a particular intention of compassionate love and mercy for a particular person or situa-tion in your life or for a troubled area of your community.

Tiempo ordinario, no tan Ordinario

P. Bismarck
