THERE CAME A WAVE
There came a wave like a great hand,Grabbing everything on the land,Its fingers of foam, circling round,Uprooting trees, razing homes to the ground,It aimed its fist at everything in sight,Nothing could survive this dreadful might,People ran in and out in time with the tide,Nowhere to go and nowhere to hide,The hand was born in the belly of the ocean,Fed by plates creating the potion,It grew in fury, it grew in power,The anger to be unleashed within the hour,No one knew what was on the way,People were working, children at play,A shriek of surprise as somebody sawA huge wall of white horses galloping ashore,The beasts dissolved under the heat,Sweeping hundreds of thousands off their feet,There was crashing and crunching and tearing apart,Seeping its way into everyone‛s heart,Lives were lost, bodies found,Brutally killed by a hungry hound,When the punch came with the force of an army,The few that survived understood the meaning of ‘Tsunami‛

The purpose of poetry:
Poems can help you say, help you show how you're feeling, but they can also introduce you to feelings,
ways of being in the world, people, very much unlike you, maybe even people from long, long ago.
Poetry is so important because it helps us
understand and appreciate the world around us.
Poetry is an art form. It allows people to express their deepest (and often darkest) emotions in a way in
which others can find beauty in.

Reminder of what we know...
What is a metaphor?
A metaphor is when two things are compared to one another without using the words 'like' and 'as'. They suggest two things are the same.
Can you find an example in the text?

Sense of a powerful force, human like, creating fear what is it?
Violent, strong, no hope of survival
Creating panic and fear
Makes it sound like this fearsome force is growing quickly.
Impending doom it will attack soon
Unexpected, people were living their normal lives. Shriek = shock/
horrorHorses = imagery
stampeding wave coming towards the people.
Dissolving creates an image of the crest of the wave hitting the shore and
suddenly dispersing
Everyone is affected by the horror. Shows the loss as a result of the disaster and the impact on the people
who had survivedWhy has this word been mentioned only at the very
end?

• Find evidence!
• Explain it!uprooting trees
razing homes to the ground
The author creates the image that a tsunami is a bad event by using language such as 'uprooting trees'. This shows that the environment is being damaged by the tsunami. 'Razing homes to the ground' shows the destruction of the houses and the land.
