THE STRATEGIC PLANNING STEERING THE STRATEGIC PLANNING STEERING COMMITTEECOMMITTEEAn open and inclusive strategic planning process began in early 2006 with the formation of a Steering Committee that represented all College constituent groups. The Steering Committee met regularly and provided guidance to Planning Facilitators Patricia Carter and Richard Alfred (from the Center for Community College Development and the University of Michigan). The Steering Committee also reviewed emerging fi ndings and coordinated a communication process that ensured that all members of the College community remained informed about the process and that individuals had multiple opportunities for input.

PPRESIDENT’S MESSAGEPRESIDENT’S MESSAGEDuring the 2006-07 academic year, Massachusetts Bay Community College developed a new fi ve-year strategic plan that was approved by the Board of Trustees on June 19, 2007. Our strategic plan, entitled Achieving Excellence, will ensure that the College maintains its constant commitment to its mission of student learning and open access.
When I joined the MassBay community, I became immediately aware of its great potential to be a premier community college with the twin goals of providing both access and excellence. This vision is the
foundation of our strategic plan.
The creation of this document is the result of a very inclusive and transparent process which highlighted the dedicated team efforts of the Strategic Planning Steering Committee, as well as the intensive discussions among focus groups formed of all segments of the college community at different times throughout the 17 months of this planning process. Faculty, staff, students, and members of the surrounding communities shared their most pressing needs and concerns and helped shape the ways in which MassBay could respond to those needs. The fruits of that labor have provided the framework with which the College can plan for its future trajectory and strengthen MassBay in the coming years.
The following fi ve (5) strategic priorities will shape the future of MassBay through 2012. In order for the College to move forward on this strategic plan, it is incumbent upon all members of the community to recognize and embrace the fi ve priorities of the plan. They are:
• Promote student success in a culture of academic excellence • Make a difference in the communities we serve • Encourage a culture of engagement • Achieve operational effectiveness • Ensure continuous improvement
We can all take pride in this exceptional achievement, but we must also realize that no strategic plan can take fl ight on its own. The challenge for us all is to now use this plan, to implement its ideals, and to engage its ideology as integral parts of our campus lives. The hard work of implementation lies ahead. I am confi dent that our community can assemble the same positive energies and benevolence with the creative, rigorous, and forward-thinking inquiry that was evident in the planning process so that this strategic plan will grow into a living and breathing document that will open the doors to a vital and bright future for Massachusetts Bay Community College.
On behalf of the entire community, I would like to extend a thank you to the Strategic Planning Steering Committee, the Board of Trustees, and all of the focus groups who participated in the planning process, for their untiring efforts. In addition, I would like to thank former Vice President for Planning and Institutional Effectiveness Carla Mazzarelli for shepherding this process and the Center for Community College Development consultants, Patricia Carter and Richard Alfred, for their skillful facilitation and guidance throughout.
