STORIES THAT DEFINE US
AMERICAN CREEDWITH DAVID M. KENNEDY AND CONDOLEEZZA RICE
TUE FEB 27 9 PM
2 FEBRUARY 2018
Dear Member,
This month, WTTW is proud to bring you a national initiative that is truly emblematic of the role public media can play in civil discourse: American Creed, coproduced with our partners at Citizen Film. In this documentary and community engagement campaign, former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, historian David M. Kennedy, and a committed group of unlikely activists (including Chicago Cubs manager Joe Maddon) explore the idea of a unifying set of ideals – an American creed. Join us on February 27 for the premiere of this important initiative, which strives to define what it means to be American.
Also this month, WTTW11 marks Black History Month with an array of relevant content across our platforms (see page 7 for details). Season 2 of Victoria on Masterpiece continues, as does Ann Curry’s poignant series We’ll Meet Again, The Interview Show with Mark Bazer, and Antiques Roadshow. American Experience recalls a deadly 1920 bombing on Wall Street. NOVA explores, from an archeological standpoint, the legendary Dunkirk operation during World War II and what we can learn from a prehistoric skeleton discovered in Mexico. Frontline delves into The Gang Crackdown, and the five-part series Impossible Builds shines a spotlight on a variety of mind-boggling architectural marvels. Finally, we indulge in a unique Wisconsin culinary institution in We’re Here for a Fish Fry. Be sure to activate your WTTW Passport subscription to watch these and many more – anytime, anywhere!
On wttw.com, American Experience: The Gilded Age examines the struggles between titans of industry and the workers they employed. What was our city’s Gilded Age like? Also, suburban Chicago native Nina Chanel Abney is a fast-rising artist who is a keen chronicler of social and racial issues. She discusses her career and her first solo exhibition opening at the Cultural Center this month. Finally, Black colleges and universities have long been powerful incubators and important centers of change. What is their role now? Stanley Nelson, director of Independent Lens: Tell Them We Are Rising, explains.
On WFMT, we’ll also honor Black History Month with recordings of African American composers and performers, and give shoutouts to the Lunar (Chinese) New Year and the 2018 Winter Olympics in PyeongChang, South Korea. We’ve invited back Michael Phillips, film critic of the Chicago Tribune, to discuss and sample music from this year’s Academy Award nominees; a week’s worth of short features and an hour-long special will begin on the final Monday of the month. And the season continues at Lyric Opera of Chicago – Lisa Flynn and Lyric’s Roger Pines will co-host live broadcasts of the openings of Bellini’s I Puritani and Mozart’s Così fan tutte.
On wfmt.com, discover African American artists who are changing classical music today. Go behind the scenes of Elizabeth Cree, a new opera by the Pulitzer Prize-winning team of composer Kevin Puts and librettist Mark Campbell that has its Chicago premiere this February. And find the perfect playlist to make this Valentine’s Day your most romantic yet.
Finally, tune in to WTTW11 on February 4 before the Oscars to watch the winning program in this year’s WTTW Viewer’s Choice Awards! And thank you for your support.
Sincerely,
Reese Marcusson Chief Operating Officer

2-for-1 Tickets to Chicago Opera Theatre’s Elizabeth CreeOn trial for her husband’s murder, Elizabeth weaves the story of her days in an English music hall, the people she
meets, and the grisly slayings that begin not long after she joins the troupe. Her trial is complicated by the discovery of her husband’s diary and the shocking details within. Historical luminaries like George Gissing, Den Leno, and Karl Marx all make appearances in this dark and thrilling premiere.
For 2-for-1 admission, please call (312) 704-8414 and use code WFMT to purchase tickets. Various dates in February are available; please visit chicagooperatheatre.org for more information. Performances take place at The Studebaker Theater, 410 South Michigan Avenue in Chicago.
2-for-1 Tickets to Doug Varone and Dancers
The Dance Center of Columbia College Chicago presents the return of Doug Varone and Dancers during its 30th anniversary season. Varone makes a rare onstage appearance perform-ing two solos that span his company’s history – one he created in 1987 and the other this past year, both set to Chopin’s Nocturnes, exploring the blur be-tween pedestrian movement and pure dance and representing a look back and a look forward. The program also includes Boats Leaving (2006) with music by Arvo Pärt, which concerns community and an unfailing faith in the triumph of the human spirit; Lux (2006) with music by Philip Glass; and the duet ”folded,” which examines the fragile and precarious nature of intimacy to music by Julia Wolfe.
Performances are February 8-10 at 7:30 pm at the Dance Center, 1306 S. Michigan Avenue. WTTW members may purchase two tickets for the price of one, subject to availability, for any perfor-mance by calling (312) 369-8330 and using the code 27278. For information, visit colum.edu.
50% Off Second Ticket to Deeply Rooted Dance TheaterDeeply Rooted Dance Theater (DRDT) embarks upon its next 20 years with
Looking to the Future, featuring the world premiere of Alice by DRDT Artistic Team member Nicole Clarke-Springer. This solo focuses on the journeys women take when making the choice to “swallow” various ideals. Inspired by Lewis Carroll’s Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, Alice explores the ways that the things we ingest and digest in our lives dictate how large or small we be-come, thus varying the intensity of our journeys. Also on the program are Femme, choreographed by Clarke-Springer, which celebrates women; Desire (1994), choreographed by Gary Abbott, which portrays three types of attraction; Church of Nations, created by Kevin Iega Jeff, which explores the implications and impact of war; and Jeff’s In a Child’s Eye, the story of a little girl’s dream journey.
Looking to the Future takes place Saturday, February 24 at 7:30 pm at the North Shore Center for the Performing Arts at 9501 Skokie Boulevard in Skokie. WTTW members who purchase one full-price ticket may purchase a second ticket at half price, subject to availability, by calling (847) 673-6300 and mention-ing WTTW. For information, visit deeplyrooteddancetheater.org.
2-for-1 Tickets for Trio Settecento Featuring Rachel Barton PineThe Music Institute of Chicago presents Trio Settecento: Rachel Barton Pine (baroque violin, viola
d’amore) John Mark Rozendaal (viola da gamba, baroque cello), and David Schrader (harpsichord, positiv organ). For the program “Five at Twenty,” enjoy an evening of sonatas drawn from Arcangelo Corelli’s
Opus V of 1700, one of the most beloved publications in the history of music. This set of violin solos, composed of six “church sonatas” (containing fugues) and six “chamber sonatas” (mostly dances) offered new conceptions of what both the violin and the sonata could achieve, a feat that has impacted the practice of instrumental music to the present day.
The concert takes place Sunday, February 18 at 3:00 pm at Nichols Concert Hall, 1490 Chicago Avenue in Evanston. WTTW members may purchase
two full-price tickets for the price of one, subject to availability, by calling (847) 905-1500 and using the code WTTW. For more information, visit musicinst.org.
Two-for-One Tickets to Hay FeverThe Saint Sebastian Players (SSP) present the farce Hay Fever by Nöel Coward. Hoping for a quiet
weekend in the country with guests, novelist David Bliss and his wife Judith, a retired actress, find that an impossible dream when their high-spirited children Simon and Sorel appear with guests of their own. Misunderstandings and tempers flare. With Judith’s new flame and David’s newest literary “inspiration” keeping company as the children follow suit, the Bliss family lives up to its name as the “quiet weekend” comes to an exhausting and hilarious finale.
Performances are February 16 to March 11, Fridays and Saturdays at 8:00 pm and Sundays at 2:00 pm at St. Bonaventure, 1625 W. Diversey in Chicago. Free parking is available in two lots. WTTW members may purchase two full-price tickets for the price of one, subject to availability, by emailing [email protected] and mentioning WTTW. For information, visit saintsebastianplayers.org.

A mostly-forgotten act of terror that remains unsolved today, the bombing helped launch the career of a young J. Edgar Hoover and sparked a bitter national debate about how far the government should go to protect the nation from acts of political violence.

Parsifal from the MetWagner didn’t want his last opera to travel beyond
the Bayreuth Festival, where the mystical drama pre-miered in 1882. The first outside staging was at the

Il Trovatore’s Troubadours and Gypsies Back at the MetThe Metropolitan Opera’s current production of Verdi’s melodrama, staged by Sir David McVicar, moves the opera’s original time frame from Spain in the 15th century to the Spain of the Napoleonic Wars of the early 19th. Maria Agresta portrays Leonora, beloved of the brooding Count di Luna (Quinn Kelsey) and also the title character, the wandering troubadour Manrico (Yonghoon Lee). Further complicating this triangle are the sinister manipulations of the gypsy Azucena (Anita Rachvelishvili). Packed with some of Italian opera’s most recognizable melodies, Il Trovatore is being conducted by Marco Armiliato.

Shagimuratove and Brownlee in Bellini’s Puritani at LyricFew composers wrote more lyrically and thrillingly for the human voice than did Vincenzo Bellini, whose I Puritani is back on the Lyric Opera House stage this month with bel-canto artists Albina Shagimoratove and Lawrence Brownlee in the leading roles of Elvira and Arturo. Set during the English Civil War in the 17th century between Puritans and Royalists, I Puritani was an immediate sensational hit when it opened in Paris in 1835. It didn’t reach American shores until the early 20th century with New York productions by the Met and at the Manhattan Opera House, being apparently neglected in this country for some 50 years thereafter, until Maria Callas and Giuseppe di Stefano starred in a 1955 Lyric Opera of Chicago production. This year’s Lyric Puritani will star Anthony Clark Evans and Adrian Sâmpetrean along with Shagimuratova and Brownlee, and will be conducted by Enrique Mazzola.

The Listening Service: New for Monday NightsTom Service, a native of Glasgow, Scotland, studied music at the universities of York and Southampton. He now teaches at Trinity College of Music, in addition to lecturing at music festivals and writing for BBC Music Magazine and The Guardian. His recent pieces for The Guardian include an appreciation of Pierre Boulez with an evaluation of the great composer-conductor’s influence, a look at Debussy’s opera Pelleas and Melisande, a light-hearted review of the Florence Foster Jenkins movie, a profile of a family of young British classical musicians, and a wry meditation on ear worms, those tunes you get into your head and can’t silence. Tom has been a regular program host on the BBC’s Radio Three with shows called Music Matters and Hear and Now. His newest series is called The Listening Service and will examine a wide range of topics: composers, performers, recordings, events. Please join us for The Listening Service, a new WFMT Monday-evening feature.

24 FEBRUARY 2018
Donizettian Comedy at the MetGaetano Donizetti composed a number of tragic operas, like Lucia di Lammermoor and the British-themed “queens” trilogy, but he also left behind two sparkling comedies: Don Pasquale and L’Elisir d’Amore (The Elixir of Love). It’s not only the hit tenor aria “Una furtiva lagrima” that recommends this opera; ranging from pathos to high comedy, the music is a delight throughout. Soprano Pretty Yende is making her role debut as Adina, who’s loved by Nemorino, sung by Matthew Polenzani. But perhaps the best role in the whole score is that of the con man Dr. Dulcamara, portrayed by Ildebrando D’Arcangelo, whose magic elixir – maybe it’s just red wine? – is touted as the secret of amorous success, and Nemorino falls for this outworn pitch in a big way. Davide Luciano rounds out the cast as Adina’s other would-be lover, Sergeant Belcore.
Saturday, February 10, 12:00 pm Neeme Järvi, Robert
Chen, and the CSOFrom last April comes a Chicago Symphony broadcast guest-conducted by Neeme Järvi, who has a long history with our orchestra as a visiting podium artist. The program features CSO concertmaster Robert Chen as soloist in the two opening works. Arvo Pärt’s Fratres is a haunting, meditative score that exists in a number of versions; this one is scored for solo violin, string orchestra, and percussion. (Like Järvi, Pärt was born in the Baltic nation of Estonia.) Chen also solos in Bartók’s Violin Concerto No. 1, less often heard than his later work in this medium, a youthful tribute to the violinist he loved and lost, Stefi Geyer. Its lyrical first movement is contrasted with a lively, more hard-hitting finale. The concert ends with Beethoven’s Pastoral Symphony.

2018 FEBRUARY 27
Mozartean Comedy Così fan tutte at LyricLisa Flynn and Lyric Opera’s Roger Pines will co-host WFMT’s live opening-night broadcast of Mozart’s sophisticated comedy Così fan tutte (Women Are Like That). The last of the three operas he composed to a libretto by Lorenzo da Ponte, Così will star Alessandro Corbelli as Don Alfonso, a cynical old man who bets with two younger ones that their fiancees will not remain faithful to them even for one day. The three set up an elaborate scheme to fool the young women, and they’re abetted by the sisters’ maidservant, Despina (Elena Tsallagova in her company debut). Portraying the bemused and confused sisters are Marianna Crebassa as Dorabella and Ana Maria Martinez as Fiordiligi. A Mozartean sidelight on Martinez: she is the singing voice of the character of Alessandra on Amazon’s Mozart in the Jungle. She returns to Lyric after a number of acclaimed appearances here in recent seasons. James Gaffigan makes his Lyric debut conducting.

Seth Boustead Profiles Thomas AdèsOne of the most admired composers of today, Thomas Adès (born in London in 1971) is also a pianist and conductor. His opera The Exterminating Angel, based on a Luis Buñuel film, will have its Metropolitan Opera premiere this spring. His other operas are Powder Her Face and The Tempest, after Shakespeare. Adès composed his notable orchestral work Asyla for the City of Birmingham Symphony under Sir Simon Rattle, who has also performed it with the Berlin Philharmonic, and the work has traveled to many other orchestras. Asyla won Adès the prestigious Grawemeyer Award for Music Composition in 2000. He’s also produced a wide variety of other orchestral scores plus chamber music. A recurring feature of Relevant Tones with Seth Boustead is called Composer Spotlight, and he profiles Adès in his upcoming one.
