SIMON CRISFORD RESIGNS GODOLPHIN ROLE Simon Crisford has resigned as racing manager ofGodolphin, a role he has held since the stable=s
inception in 1989, and hasaccepted the position asSheikh Mohammed=s globalracing advisor, according to arelease highlighting changesthe operation has made in thewake of an extensive reviewled by Lord Stevens. Thereview, which concluded theoperation=s former trainerMahmood Al Zarooni actedalone, was still critical of howGodolphin handled a dopingscandal last summer. According to the release,AThe roles of Saeed BinSuroor of Al Quoz Stables andStanley House, and Charlie
Appleby of Moulton Paddocks and Al Asifa Stables willbe re-emphasized as the people ultimately responsiblefor their particular stables; they hold the delegatedauthority of the owner as defined by the condition oftheir license. They will also serve as the chiefspokesmen for their respective stables and Godolphin.As a result of these changes, the position of RacingManager for Godolphin no longer exists.@ In addition, a new board of directors will beannounced and will include HH Sheikh Juma binDalmook Al Maktoum and Altaf Noorani. HughAnderson will become managing director of theGodolphin Racing Office and Godolphin trainers in theU.S., France and Ireland will report to John Ferguson. AHaving dealt with the events of last year and seenthe Lord Stevens inquiry through to its conclusion, Ithought that this was a good moment to bring my timeat Godolphin to a close,@ Crisford told Racing Post. GOTHAM DRAWS 11 GII Withers S. runner-up Uncle Sigh (Indian Charlie)prepared for Saturday=s GIII Gotham S. with a four-furlong work at Belmont Monday, covering the distancein :47.98. Hours after the work, the colt drew postthree in a field of 11 for the 1 1/16-mile race. AI'msuper pleased with the way he's coming into the race,@trainer Gary Contessa said yesterday. AHe trained good,had a good work this morning, and we'll see whathappens.@ Uncle Sigh will face off against the RickViolette-trained Samraat (Noble Causeway), who bestedUncle Sigh by a length in the Withers. EUROPE FORMS HORSERACING ALLIANCE Irish Thoroughbred Marketing (ITM), Great BritishRacing International (GBRI) and the French Racing andBreeding Committee (FRBC) announced the formationof an alliance designed to attract internationalinvestment in European racing and the bloodstockindustry. The alliance will be primarily focused onpromoting Europe as the premier region to source andrace the best horses. AWe are very excited about thisproject; racing is now a truly global sport and businessand we want to extend our reach to the four corners ofthe globe,@ said ITM=s General Manager Elaine Hatton ina statement. TRAINING IN QATARBy Michele MacDonald With Qatar=s three premier days of racing beginningon Feb. 25 and completing the week-long InternationalEquestrian Sword Festival on Feb. 27, the whispersseem to be everywhere. People do not tend to speak loudly or rapidly in Qatar,but with the nation=s rising influence in racingworldwide, their soft words have increasing clout. Andwhat they are saying is that a new racetrack--one thatwill stand out in a world full of racetracks--is beingplanned for the greater Doha area. The vision for the new racing facility is generallyattributed to Sheikh Joaan bin Hamad Al Thani, brotherof HH Sheikh Tamin bin Hamad Al Thani, the reigningemir and patron of the international festival. SheikhJoaan has quickly become a powerhouse in racing asthe owner of last year=s G1 Prix de l=Arc de Triomphewinner Treve and other Group 1 winners Toronado andOlympic Glory; all three horses made the top 10 on theWorld=s Best Racehorse Rankings for 2013. AHe wants the track to be for the world--and for theworld to come here,@ said Abdulaziz Al Fuhaid, anexecutive with the Qatar Racing and Equestrian Clubwho manages the registration of racehorses in thecountry, explaining that high-level sports help promotethe country. So far, not many details have filtered out about whatmight be envisioned, but if the way current horse
sports are conducted inQatar is any indication,the result will beimpeccable. One Qatari racinginsider predictedconfidently that the newtrack Awill be betterthan Meydan,@ themonolithic racetrackopened in Dubai in2010. Getting a glimpse ofsome of the currentracing facilities in Qatar,
particularly at the gated entrance to the racing part ofthe sprawling Racing and Equestrian Club, gives avisitor the impression that what already exists is bothtraditionally beautiful in this Arabian land as well aspractically functional. The racetrack is, after all, namedAl Rayyan Racecourse, with Al Rayyan meaning Agateof paradise@ in Arabic. Currently, as many as 900 racehorses are based here,including the Purebred Arabians that compete in races.

Writer=s Up cont. However, with Qatari owners increasingly buyingand racing Thoroughbreds, more than half of therunners stabled in the peaceful backstretch area aresaid to be Thoroughbreds. There are dirt and turf tracks here, not a syntheticsurface like the one found at Meydan that has provedproblematic for many American-based runners whohave traveled to compete on the G1 Dubai World Cupprogram. All the best races during Qatar=s season,which extends from October to May, are run on grass,however. The most recent information made available by theAsian Racing Federation (ARF), of which Qatar is amember, shows that there have been about 60 days ofracing annually with slightly over 400 races run in aseason. AHorse racing has always been part of the Arabianculture and the Qataris have been racing their horsesfor centuries,@ states the ARF website section on Qatar. Total prizemoney in the annual racing program hasreached US$11 million, while the number of licensedowners was 145 in the most recently reported figures.Six international races for Thoroughbreds were listed,highlighted by the US$560,000 HH The Emir=s Trophyover 2400 meters (about 1 1/2 miles) on grass, withthis year=s running set for Feb. 27 along with thecompanion US$560,000 HH The Emir=s Sword forPurebred Arabians at 2400 meters on turf.
Many of the horses that are based in Qatar to racehave been imported from Europe and do not go backagain, but rather stay in the Middle East to completetheir careers. There also are a number of American-
breds competing, includingChaperno, a More ThanReady gelding, and Sandy=sRow, a Street Cry filly,both in the fifth race onFebruary 25, a 1600-meter(about one-mile) handicap.Sandy=s Row was bred byDarley, while Chapernocompeted for Godolphin,so both have a connectionwith Sheikh Mohammedbin Rashid al Maktoum ofDubai.
Of course, the American-bred star of the Feb. 25program is the now 9-year-old gelding Force Freeze, ason of Forest Camp who was second in the 2011 GI Breeders= Cup Sprint. He will compete in the Qatar2022 Invitation Cup, a local Group 3 race over 1200meters (about six furlongs) on turf and will be joined byAbeer, a mare by Shamardal bred in Kentucky bySheikh Hamdan bin Rashid al Maktoum=s ShadwellFarm, and 14 others in the race. There also are races for Qatari-bred horses, with 16lined up for a conditions race over 1850 meters ongrass on Feb. 25. cont. p9

The Asian Racing Federation reports that there areabout 65 Thoroughbreds foaled each year in Qatar,with 20 stallions currently at stud and just a little lessthan 100 mares. Fifteen stud farms are listed. Many of these numbers are bound to leap aheadwhen the new racetrack takes shape, although desertconditions are not ideal for breeding farms, despite thefact that most barns are air conditioned in Qatar. Regardless, the Qataris record of quickly remakingtheir landscape with sparkling new buildings andthriving businesses shows that much could happen. Modern racing began as recently as 1975, when astarting gate and photo finish system were used for thefirst time. In 1991, a new racetrack was built andexisting public facilities upgraded, and just three yearslater in 1994 another track was built. Al Rayyan, whichincludes a veterinary hospital and horse swimming poolon its grounds, was constructed in 2001. Few other racing nations have come so far, so fast.And Qatar and its driving forces, including SheikhJoaan, really are just beginning. Click here to share this story.

Saturday=s Grade II action at Gulfstream Park and theFair Grounds resulted in some major changes to thestandings on the Road to the Kentucky Derby pointslistings. Thanks to his Risen Star victory, IntenseHoliday now heads the list with a total of 53 points, hisnearest rival being the Fountain of Youth hero WildcatRed, with 50. At this comparatively early stage, these two are wellclear of their nearest pursuer--the Risen Star runner-upAlbano on 24--but it remains to be seen whether thetable toppers are true GI Kentucky Derby contenders.After all, Intense Holiday has won only two of his sevenstarts and snatched victory by only a nose, whereasWildcat Red had just a head to spare over General aRod. The tripwas a 1 1/16 miles in the Fountain of Youth, but ShugMcGaughey, trainer of third-placed market leader TopBilling, summed it up nicely when he said, AThe trackwas playing to speed and those two horses were outthere and didn=t stop.@ Wildcat Red is certainly an admirable colt, and heneeded to show plenty of courage to add the Fountainof Youth to his clear-cut win in the GIII Hutcheson S. That double hasn=t been achieved since Fly So Free didso prior to his Florida Derby success in 1991 andWildcat Red now ranks alongside such distinguishedrecent Fountain of Youth winners as Orb, Union Rags,Eskendereya, Quality Road, Scat Daddy and FirstSamurai. I can=t help wondering, though, whether he has thestamina to keep on winning as the distances lengthen.His sire, the now Louisiana-based D=Wildcat, did winover a mile on turf as a 4-year-old, but his dirtsuccesses all came over shorter distances. Forest Wildcat, the sire of D=Wildcat, was anotherspeedster. In a career spent entirely over sprintdistances, this son of Storm Cat gained his two graded
victories over sixfurlongs as a 5-year-old.Forest Wildcat provedless one-dimensional asa stallion, siring theoccasional gradedwinner over a 1 1/8miles, such as ForestSecrets, D=WildcatSpeed and Euphony,and he was even
responsible for a Grade II winner over 1 1/4 miles inSnow Dance. D=Wildcat has yet to prove himself capable of siringsimilar winners. His previous Hutcheson S. winner,D=Funnybone, was a prolific Grade II winner at aroundseven furlongs and his other graded winner, WildcatLily, also thrived as a sprinter. It isn=t impossible thatD=Wildcat will one day come up with something withmore stamina. Another of Forest Wildcat=s fast sons,the G1 Prix de l=Abbaye winner Var, has a 1 1/2-milegroup winner to his credit in South Africa, but he owesmost of his success to sprinters, as well as to the milerVariety Club (an eye-catching Group 2 winner on hisrecent Dubai debut). The bottom half of Wildcat Red=s pedigree providessome hope that he could be an exception to the speedrule, as his first two dams are daughters of Miner=sMark and Flying Paster. The Miner=s Mark mare,Racene, gained her only black-type when third in theGIII Yerba Buena H. over 1 3/8 miles, so shepresumably inherited some stamina from her sire,whose finest moment came when he defeated ColonialAffair to take the GI Jockey Club Gold Cup over a 1 1/4miles. Flying Paster, for his part, was a triple Grade Iwinner over 1 1/8 miles. This suggests that Wildcat Red could well be acontender in the Florida Derby. But the KentuckyDerby? I rather doubt it.
Moving on to Intense Holiday, his victory is anotherreminder that Harlan=s Holiday=s death last fall at theage of 14 was a sizeable loss to the Kentucky breedingindustry. Intense Holiday follows Poker Player andAmi=s Holiday as the third graded winner from Harlan=sHoliday=s 2011 crop and his sire=s total of gradedwinners now stands at 19 from his first seven crops. You may recall that Harlan=s Holiday failed by a nose
in his bid to land the 2002Fountain of Youth, but thistough colt made amendsby taking the GI FloridaDerby and GI Blue Grass S.Those victories sawHarlan=s Holiday narrowlystart favorite for theKentucky Derby and histrainer Ken McPeek laterregretted not instructingthe colt=s rider to take
more advantage of the colt=s natural speed. Althoughhe was never to win over 1 1/4 miles, Harlan=s Holidaywent on to be placed in the GI Jockey Club Gold Cup,G1 Dubai World Cup and GI Hollywood Gold Cup, so itisn=t surprising that he proved capable of siring a GI Kentucky Derby third and GI Belmont S. second inhis first-crop son Denis of Cork. Judged purely on pedigree, Intense Holiday probablyhas a better chance of being effective over 1 1/4 milesthan Wildcat Red. His four great grandsires include theKentucky Derby winners Affirmed and Unbridled andthe eight stallions in the next generation include Halo,Exclusive Native, Fappiano and Caro, who collectivelyhad six Kentucky Derby winners to their credit.
