Project Brief: A4DM003-1314 3D Design – YR 1Project Title: Tumblr

Brief  It is said that there are well over 150million blogs in the world but what is a blog? A blog (a contraction of the words web log ) is a discussion or informational site published on the

World Wide Web. This can be seen as a personal diary, a space for thought, a politicalrant, or as we like to see it in 3D Design, a place to share ideas and to collaborate.

The use of the ‘microblogging’ platform Tumblr will be one of your key resources withinthe school of the Arts and consequently 3D Design. This site, through your input, willcontribute hugely to the course supporting work under the heading of ‘E-learning’. Our pages will eventually contain a variety of course information ranging from assignmentsand timetables through course to news and student blogs. In preparation for this you arerequired (within your groups) to access and set up your own personal page on Tumblr followed by a blogging page on one of the listed subject areas.

Within your groups you must set up your own personal page on Tumblr and thencollate a range of visual images for the 3D Tumblr website. The intention is tocreate a 3D database of inspiring images that can be commented on by other userswithin 3D as well as being an additional resource for future projects. The imagedatabase will be subdivided into the following sections:

•  Architectural forms & structures

• Urban details & street

• Street furniture

• Products

• Interiors

Note: One group / one section only.

Task 1. Unit 1: D1 & Unit 4: D1

Demonstrate independence, innovation and individuality in evaluating and using sources, integrating visual recording skills and in-depth understanding incommunicating information. This can be evidenced through your primary andsecondary research of architectural forms, urban details, structures, street furniture andproducts that you believe should be added into the 3D library of inspiring design imagesfor your Tumblr website. Within your journal state the designer, architect, date andlocation of your chosen images for upload, giving reasons why you have selected them.

Communicate an intended meaning cogently to a specified audience throughimaginative use of the language of art and design. Show your understanding of thisrequirement by taking photos of interesting materials, techniques and textures, building adigital bank of historical and contemporary images on Tumblr, keeping within the chosengroup section.

Task 2. Unit 1: M2 & Unit 4: M2

Show an individual approach to communicating, comparing, illustrating and expanding information. Presenting work in a coherent and appropriate creativeformat. By this we ask you to record your ideas and discuss visual qualities, materialsand all related 3D images being uploaded onto Tumblr. By project deadline your presentation will be based on your Tumblr website and sketch work in your journals!

Communicate an intended meaning clearly to a specified audience through refined use of the language of art and design . For  this you need to develop your visuallanguage through your ideas and illustrations both in your journal and on Tumblr. Alsoshow how your team intend to visually communicate your chosen section to the wider Tumblr community. Keep in mind that your sections need to look professional, speltcorrectly and using key design terms.

Task 3. Unit 1: P3 & Unit 4: P3

Discuss visual recording in others work, by comparing and contrasting the images youare collating within your sections. Critically analyse, passing personal judgements onimages uploaded, keeping in mind your chosen audience. You could also discuss and

analyse any photos taken personally which relate to your section. Describe ways inwhich visual language is used to communicate ideas and meaning. This is achievedthrough your Tumblr page, related photos taken, video and even models made in order toconvey your ideas. Communicate clearly, precisely, professionally and imaginatively!

Task 4. Unit 1: P4 & P5 & Unit 4: P4

Review own visual recording within your team and personally discuss your journeythrough your evaluation. Your final evaluation should be of a suitable length, be wordprocessed, spell checked and fixed into journals. Develop visual recording to produceeffective outcomes. Through your analysis and feedback received from others, refineyour section concept, showing how you have refined and why. Your final outcome needs

to be tested, printed and fixed into your journals with notes added on revisions made.

Communicate an intended meaning to a specified audience using the language of art and design. This is achieved primarily through your Tumblr blog, where you arerequired to upload related 3D images of interest and discuss these images in depth usingrelated design vocabulary. This is then exhibited to the ‘live’ design community for onwarddiscussion. We will need to see evidence of clear planning and execution, within your

journals and on Tumblr. Any blogging to the wider design community needs to remainprofessional with evidence of such demonstrated within your journals.

Key Dates & Deliveries. There is only two weeks to complete this project at the end of

which you must produce all the required outcomes in order to pass. Introductory briefing: Monday 30 September 2013 at 10am

Deadline & Presentations: Thursday 10 October 2013 at 10am
