WhetheryouareanativeChinesespeakerorjustbeginningtolearnChinese,you can teach the language to your child in a natural, simple way—byintegrating the language intoyourdaily speech.Allparents teach their child afirst language simply by talking with them on a day-to-day basis andcommentingonalltheactivitiesthataregoingon.Forinstance,whenchoosingclothesforyourchildtowear,yousay,“Whichshirtshouldweweartoday?Theyellowoneorthegreenone?”Orwhengoingoutside,yousay,“Ohlook,it’sasunnyday today.” In the sameway,youcan teachyourchildanew language.The bestway to learn a foreign language is by jumping in and speaking it asmuchaspossible,andtheseflashcardswillhelpyoubegintodothat.

TipsforTeachingandLearningUsingTuttleChineseforKidsFlashCardsUse the cards inanyorder.Theorder inwhichyoupickup the cards is notimportant, but the frequencywithwhich you practice is important. Pick cardsbasedonwhatinterestsyouandyourchildoryourclassroomfromdaytoday.Itmaybeadifferentgroupeveryday,oritmaybethesamegroupforseveraldaysinarow.

Focusonpersonalinteraction.Don’tjustplayanaudioCD,orputyourchildinfrontofaDVD,andexpectyourchildtoabsorbthelanguage.Instead,initiateconversationswithyourchildusingthewords,phrases,andsentencesprovidedhere. As you learn and teach new words, incorporate them into your dailyconversation.Forexample,askyourchildtobringyouanapple,butsay“apple”in Chinese. When you’re taking letters out of the mailbox, count them inChinese.Whenyourchildgivesyousomething,say“thankyou”inChinese.

Startsmall.Youdon’tneedtostartspeakingfullsentences;youcanstartwithagreeting,ashortcommand,orjustaword.

Beconsistent.Forexample,every timeyouaskyourchild towashhands,saythewords“洗手”soheorshebeginstoassociatethesoundofthewordswiththeactivity.

Make it fun. Do guessing games, word scrambles, matching games withcharactersandpictures,treasurehunts,andwhateverelsegetsyourkidsexcitedabout learning.Forexample, to teachcolors, throwcoloredpiecesofpaperonthe floor, call out a color in Chinese and ask children to race to pick out the

correctpieceofpaper.Youngerchildrenwilllovetoplayhide-and-seekandwillpickupquicklyoncountingoutthe“1…2…3…,HereIcome!”inChinese.Addanelementofchallenge,fun,andadventuretoeverythingyoudo.

Sing a song.There’s nothing like putting words to music when you want toremember the words! The audio includes some of the most popular songssungbyChinesechildren.Asmuchaspossible,we’vechosensongsthatcontainsomeofthewordsincludedintheflashcards.Playthesongsathomeorinyourcar (and sing along) andyou’ll findyour child singing them inno time.Soonhe’ll start tomakea connectionbetween thewords in the songand thewordshe’slearningwiththeflashcards.

Followyourchild’slead.Focusontheactivitiesthatinterestyourchild.Don’tfeelobligatedtousethesecardslikeatraditionalsetofflashcards,drillingyourchildoneachword.But ifyourchildhappens to lovebeingquizzedand takesprideinbeingabletoanswerinChinesetothequestion“What’sthis?”thenbyallmeans,askher!

Usethelanguagenaturally.Don’tfeelcompelledtotranslateeverything;ifyouareusingthelanguageincontext,childrenwillpickuponwhatyouaresaying.

Speak as frequently as possible. To help you remember the words you arelearningandtospeakthemthroughouttheday,putsignsnexttofamiliarobjects,indicatingtheChinesecharacterandpronunciation.Ormakeapersonal“photoalbum”bycuttingoutpicturesof familiarobjects, putting them in abinderorphoto album, and labeling themwithChinese characters, pinyin, andEnglish.Treatitlikeabookthatyoureadwithyourchild.

Don’tworryaboutyourownpronunciation.Themostimportantthingisthatyouspeakthelanguagewithoutinhibitionandthatyouengagewithyourchild;ifchildrenarealsohearingthewordsonanaudio ,orspokenbyothernativespeakers, they will hear the correct sounds and pronounce them accurately.Children benefit from being able to distinguish between sounds in a foreignlanguageandreproducethemnaturally,likeanativespeakerdoes.Evenifyourpronunciationisn’tperfect,yourchildwillgetit.

UsethelanguageinfrontofChinesespeakers.Whatisthepointoflearningalanguageifnottocommunicatewithspeakersofthatlanguage?Don’tbeafraidto try saying a fewwordswithChinese speakers.Chances are you’ll improveyour own skills together, and learn something about Chinese customs andculture,too.

SomeBasicsabouttheLanguage

Mandarin Chinese, and Other Chinese Dialects This set of flash cardscontainspinyinromanization,whichisasystemthatusestheWesternalphabettoindicatehowtopronounceChinesecharacters.ForpeoplewhoareusedtotheWestern alphabet, it can help make learning how to pronounce Chinesecharactersabiteasier.

Thepinyin in these flashcardscorresponds toMandarinChinese,which isthedialectofChinesespokeninnorthernChinaandtheofficiallanguageofthePeople’s Republic of China and Taiwan. The speakers whose voices youwillhearontheaudio areallnativeMandarinChinesespeakers.Therearemany

other dialects spoken throughout China and abroad; Cantonese is one of thedialects commonly heard in overseas Chinese communities, and it is quitedifferentfromMandarininitspronunciation.

TonesAll syllables inMandarinChineseare spokenwithaparticular tone.Since thenumbers1through10containsyllablesspokenwithallfourtones,let’susethe

numberstounderstandtones:

Afirsttoneisindicatedbyastraightlineoveravowel,asinyī(一,thenumber1),sān(三, thenumber3),qī (七, thenumber7),orbā (八, thenumber8). Ithasahappy,peacefulsound,likeahighmusicalnotepronouncedwithanevenpitch.

Asecondtoneisindicatedbyalineoveravowelthatslantsupwardstowardthesky,as inshí (十, the number10). It has a quizzical sound, aswhen a personasksaquestioninEnglishandhervoicerisesslightly:“Really?”

A thirdtone is indicatedbya falling, then rising line,and it looks likea“v”.Numberspronouncedwithathirdtoneare:jiǔ(九, thenumber9)andwǔ (五,the number 5). It has a slow, languid sound as the pitch first falls, then rises

slightly,aswhenpeoplesometimessay“mm-hmm”inEnglish.

A fourthtone is indicated by a line that slants downward toward the ground.Numberspronouncedwith a fourth toneareèr (二, the number 2),sì (四, thenumber4),andliù(六,thenumber6).Thistonehasanemphatic,commandingsound.

A neutral tone is spoken quickly and lightly. An example of a syllablepronounced with a neutral tone is the second “ba” in the word bàba (爸爸,father).

Tone is essential toaword’smeaning,because therearemanysyllables inChinesethataredifferentiatedonlybytone.Familiarizeyourselfwiththetones,listencarefullytothe“Numbers”groupofcardstohearthefourtones,andtrytopronounceeachwordinitsappropriatetone.

In the spoken language, the tonesofa smallnumberofwords—suchas yī(一, the number 1) andbù (不, no)—can change when these words occur incombinationwithcertainothertones.Forexample,afourth-tonebù isactuallypronouncedasasecondtonewhenitprecedesanotherfourth-toneword.Intheseflashcards,wefollowstandardstyleanddonotalter the tonemarks to reflectthetonechangesinspeech.Youmaynoticesomedifferencesasyoulistentotheaudio andcomparethepronunciationofthesewordswiththeirformalpinyinspellings.Fornow,don’tworryaboutthese“exceptions”totherule—justlistento the audio and try to mimic the speaker’s pronunciation as closely aspossible.Asyoulistenandlearn,youwillgraduallybeablesaythecorrecttonesnaturally.

Forming Your First Sentences in Chinese The basic structure of the mostcommontypeofChinesesentenceissimilartoEnglish:Subject–Verb–Object.

Chineseverbsarenotconjugatedfortense,sothesamewordchī(吃)isusedtosay“Ieat,”“Iate,”“Ihaveeaten,”“Iwilleat,”etc.Thismakes it surprisinglyeasytoputtogetherabasicsentenceinChinese;youcancombineapronounlikewǒ(我,me)ornǐ(你,you)withanactionverblikechī(吃,toeat),addonthenameofafood,suchaspíngguǒ(苹果/蘋果,apple),andyouhaveasentence:“Iameatinganapple.”Replace the“apple”withanothernameofa food,andyouhaveanothersentence.

AnotherfunandsurprisingthingaboutChineseisthatadjectivescanbeusedasverbsinasentence,soyoucancombineapronounlikenǐ(你,you)withanadjective like piàoliang (漂亮, pretty), and you have another sophisticatedsentence: “You are pretty.” You can go far in communicating with nativespeakerswithjustahandfulofsimplephrasesandsentencesinyourrepertoire!Thissetof flashcardsprovidesyouwith the tools tomakemanymoresimplesentencesinChinesethanyoumighthaveeverthoughtpossibleasabeginninglearner.

SomeBasicsabouttheWrittenLanguageWhilethefocusinthissetofcardsisonlearninghowtosayandunderstandsomebasicChinesewordsandphrases,TuttleChineseforKidsFlashCardsinclude thewrittencharactersandsomebasicinformationabouteachcharacterforthosewhoareinterestedinlearningtoreadandwritecharacters.

The cards show the radicals because they are often called the “buildingblocks”ofChinesecharactersandbecauseknowinghowtoidentifyacharacter’sradicalisanimportantpartoflearningChinese.

Many Chinese characters are compound characters, which are formed bycombining a phonetic component that gives a clue about a character’spronunciation,andaconceptualcomponent thatgivesaclueabout thegeneralconceptualcategorythecharacterrepresents.Theseconceptualcomponentsareradicals.

There are about 200 radicals in Chinese, but only about 30 to 40 arecommonly used. Radicals have three useful functions for people who arelearningChinese:1. They give some idea about the meaning of a Chinesecharacter. For example, many characters related to water contain the “water”radicalastheconceptualcomponent.Intheseflashcards,you’llseethat“water”istheradicalformanywordshavingtodowithliquids:汁(juice),洗(wash),游泳(swim),汽(air—originally“steam”).

2.DictionariesoftheChineselanguageareorganizedbasedonradicals.

3.Knowingradicalshelpsyouguessthemeaningofcharactersyoudon’tknow,iftheycontainaradicalyoudoknow.

How to Write in ChineseWriting the Chinese language is something thatchildrenmaywanttoexploreafterthey’velearnedsomespokenChinese.Theseflashcardsdon’tattempttoteachhandwritingindepth,buttheydodemonstratethestrokeorderforeachword,andsoofferagreatbaseforfurtherlearning.

Anotherreasonthatthecardsincludestrokeorder?Becauserecognizinghowmanystrokesare inacharacter is thefirststep in learning towriteacharacterproperly—aswellastolookingitupinadictionary.

Kids may be interested in knowing a few basic rules for writing Chinese

characters:1.Leftbeforeright,2.topbeforebottom,3. horizontal strokes before vertical strokes, 4. outside strokes before inside

strokes,5.bottomlast.

Childrenwhoare interested in learningChinesehandwritingorcalligraphycan enroll in aChinesewritingor calligraphy class;many communities in theU.S. have volunteer-run weekend schools that offer classes on writing andcalligraphy.

TraditionalCharacters&SimplifiedCharacters:What’stheDifference?As more and more characters were added to the Chinese language over thecenturies,someof themgotcomplicated: they tookmanystrokes towrite,andalsoweresometimesdifficulttoread.Peoplesometimesdevelopedshortcutstosimplifythingswhentheyhadtowritecertaincharacters.

In themiddleof the twentieth century, theChinesegovernmentdecided tocreate a standardized, simplified set of characters;many of themore complextraditionalcharactersweregivensimplifiedforms,andsotheybecameeasiertolearnandtowrite.

Today thesimplifiedcharactersareusedalmostexclusively in thePeople’sRepublic of China, in Singapore, and in Malaysia. The traditional characterscontinuetobeusedinTaiwan,inHongKong,inMacau,andinmanyChinesecommunitiesaroundtheworld.
