Living in fear. This has become our "new normal". I hate those two words -- "new normal" -- because it insinuates change and maybe not a wanted change but a needed change. And I also hate the words "living in fear". I would much rather live cautiously yet boldly. Yes, I like that instead. Live boldly. I'm hoping that 99.9% of you were at Yom Kippur services and heard my High Holiday appeal. If I do say so myself, it was pretty powerful. And now, it’s more important than ever.to embrace being Jewish. To embrace your heritage. Your legacy to your children. To be a member of a bricks and mortar building like Temple Sinai. After the horrific shooting at the Tree of Life Synagogue in Pittsburgh, I heard from a lot of you. It was a mixed bag. Some of you said you were afraid to come to Services; that you were fearful of sitting in the Chapel and being vulnerable if an intruder opened those doors .... And then some of you told me you felt helpless -- you wanted to do something to show your strength - OUR strength - that this act of brutality and hatred will simply NOT be tolerated. That we, as a group, MUST stand together. Hatred will no longer be tolerated. Like I said at Yom Kippur, there are so many obstacles. People who want to stifle us. Make us feel like we don't matter. No more! Temple Sinai is open for business. We are here! This is OUR HOUSE and no one is going to mess with it. No one will mess with Temple Sinai. We are far too strong and far too cohesive to let anyone take us under. For the first couple of days & weeks after the slaughter in Pittsburgh we, as a Jewish people, decide that hate will not
define us. I saw hashtags floating around: #HateEndsHere and #ShowUpForShabbat. These messages don't end. We need to continue to encourage. We need to always #ShowUpForShabbat. Not just for our family in Pittsburgh. For our children; for Temple Sinai; for Jews everywhere. I will leave you with the most powerful statement I heard from the Pittsburgh tragedy. It resonated so deeply with me, it literally brought me to my knees: "A 97 year old Holocaust survivor was killed for being Jewish yesterday, in the United States." Just writing that makes me sob. Let that sink in for a moment. And please, remember how important it is to embrace your Judaism. And your synagogue. May 2019 bring us all love, health, happiness .... and safety.

New Security Measures Being Taken at Temple Sinai In the wake of the shooting in Pittsburgh, I want you all to know that we are taking every precaution to keep Temple Sinai safe. I know a lot of you are very concerned, if not scared, and that is totally understandable. A committee has been formed and have been VERY hard at work making security changes. We have implemented the following security measures to date:
1. In the Chapel there is now a camera at the front door with an intercom system. Beginning January 1st, the Chapel doors will be locked except for a 20 minute window around service start times. Effective February 1, the doors will be locked at all times, (even during services). You will only be permitted in the building by ringing the doorbell and being
seen through the camera/intercom system OR by obtaining your own electronic key fob. Any member of Temple Sinai who would like a key fob to the building, is entitled (at a minimal cost). Contact Amy in the Temple Sinai Office. Ushers will be instructed on how to use the intercom
system & who to let in the door. This will definitely be a process but we are working to make it as seamless as possible. Armed Guards will be used during the High Holidays and at larger events at Temple Sinai. 2. The glass doors in the main sanctuary now have a security film on them. While that does not mean it will stop a bullet, it is designed to prevent the glass from shattering and make it difficult to break through - thus allowing precious minutes for your escape, if necessary. 3. A country-wide plan on how to combat an assailant (called ALICE) will be implemented and a building wide PA system to be heard throughout the entire building is in the planning stages. So ... this is just the beginning. More security measures will be implemented throughout 2019 and you will be updated about everything.
Shabbat Dinner at the Rabbi’s Table Every month will be a new chance for people to attend. Keep an eye out for your invitation in the next few months. This is a great opportunity to get together with friends - old and new - and to break bread with Rabbi Marmon. It's a very informal dinner and we've been experimenting with new recipes. The dinners we have done have been fun, informative and very welcoming. We hope you’ll join us when you get your invitation.
Your Temple Sinai Family is Here for You With the yucky weather quickly approaching, please remember that we are happy to arrange rides for you if you feel unsafe driving. We have a "team" of safe, reliable people who would be happy to get you to Friday night or Saturday morning Services, as well as any other events at Temple Sinai. If you are feeling uncomfortable, don't try to drive in freezing rain, snow or ice. Your Temple Sinai Family is here for you. The period of this quarter’s bulletin spans from Chanukah to Purim. Chanukah remembers an attempt at the spiritual destruction of the Jewish People, which we overcame by a war. Purim remembers an attempt at the physical destruction of the Jewish People, which we overcame by prayer and fasting with quiet Divine intervention (and a little astute politicking). Spiritual and physical devastation are two sides of one coin; they look different on the surface, but their core is the same. In the span of this bulletin, you will each have the opportunity to contribute to both the physical and the spiritual security and longevity of Temple Sinai. The entire American Jewish community is wrestling at present with a new phrase and concept in our lexicon: “after Pittsburgh.” Here at Temple Sinai, I can assure you that tremendous thought, great effort, and no small amount of money (on our scale) is being expended on expanding and upgrading our physical security. The most obvious aspect of this which you will experience directly is that unlocking of our doors will be much more restricted in the future, including during most services. This is very uncomfortable for us as an institution; in fact, “open doors” has been a part of our advertising motto up till now. However, in the event of a violent incident (God forbid), many lives can be saved by forcing a perpetrator to reveal him/herself at the door rather than attack from within. A corollary of keeping the doors locked is that we will need a system for letting appropriate people in appropriately. This is partly a technical question, and that side of it is being addressed thoughtfully by our newly instantiated security committee – thank you to everyone participating in that important new group. More importantly than the technologies, however, is that we will need some people trained and prepared to decide who is appropriate before opening the door, and enough of them to cover all services and events that will require it. I would like to ask each of you to think
seriously about whether you might be able to contribute in this way several times each year, depending on the number of volunteers (plus some training sessions). In particular, if you are not someone who brings yourself regularly to pray on Shabbat or holidays, I’d like to ask you to consider substituting the mitzvah of helping protect those who do come to pray on any given occasion. Please contact me, or Amy, or Stacey Blacker if you are interested. We will ensure your name gets to the right person. Now to the other side of the coin. It is not uncommon for us, or many other synagogues, to see a drop in service attendance immediately after the High Holy Days. Everyone feels like they’ve been around the synagogue a lot over a short span, and they are “oysgedavent” – prayed out. This year, although the post-holiday doldrums should be long over, we have struggled to snap back to our usual attendance figures, and have failed to make minyans a number of times. Partly, this is attributable to some of our veteran “regulars” getting older, or having other changes or stresses in their lives. Whatever the cause, we as a community are failing a core part of our mission – failing one another – if we are unable to reliably make minyans to enable reciting Kaddish, reading Torah, saying Kedushah, and all the other things that bring people to our sanctuary on sacred occasions. I would like to ask each of you to think about how you would feel if you were unable to say Kaddish for a yohrzeit or have an Aliyah for some special occasion in your life – unfortunately, I know some of you do not need to imagine this feeling. Hold on to that feeling of disappointment until it really aches your heart. Then, consider making a commitment to yourself that you will come for at least four occasions during the year when you do not have any special personal reason. Isn’t it worth a few hours of your time, spread throughout an entire year, to help someone else avoid that empty feeling of distress? And, they might just return the favor when your time of need comes around. May we all stay warm and safe this winter, and may we each thrive spiritually and physically together.

Rabbi Mauricio Balter is the Executive
Director, Masorti Olami and MERCAZ
Olami and this is an excerpt from his
blog post.
The holiday of Hanukkah is also
known as Chag Haurim—the festival
of lights. This is a holiday that
presents us with a wide variety of
topics, meanings and possibilities.
As with every holiday in the Jewish
tradition, it gives us the possibility of
verifying anew that which is relevant
to our day.
One of the central themes that
Hanukkah presents is the constant
struggle, the people of Israel, to
preserve our Jewish identity—the
endless struggle between assimilation
and keeping our identity. The
Maccabees fought against the
Hellenization of society and wanted to
protect Jewish values. Lacking
resources, they were willing to do
anything necessary to not lose their
essence—being Jewish.
Is there room for us to reflect? Do we
guard the legacy of the Maccabees
and continue our fight to ensure the
continuation of our identity?
In the Talmud, Tractate Shabbat 21
reminds us of the following discussion
between Beit Hillel and Beit Shamai.
Beit Shamai says that on the first day of
Hanukkah, we light eight candles and
on each of the following days we
eliminate one candle per night. Beit
Hillel says that on the first day of
Hanukkah, we light one candle and on
each day that follows, we add one
more candle per night.
Rabbi Yossi bar Abin and Rabbi Yossi
bar Zevida disagree on the reasons for
these rules. One says that Beit
Shamai’s opinion considers the days to
come, while Beit Hillel based his on the
days which had elapsed. While the
other says that Beit Shamai based his
ruling on the dwindling number of
sacrifices offered in the Temple each
day of Sukkot (Sukkot is the biblical
model for the post-Biblical Hanukkah
holiday), while Beit Hillel made his
decision according to the maxim “we
increase in holy things, not decrease”.
Rabbi Balter states we are at a crucial
point. What Jewish identity do we
want to pass on to future generations?
We must fight against the assimilation
that presses us from the outside and
against the internal indifference that
destroys who we are. He goes on to
say that during his travels he has seen
many communities around the world
who, although lacking means, still
have much faith, energy and
commitment and continue to keep
the flame of Judaism alive in their
community. They, like Beit Hillel, decided "laalot bakodesh"—to
continue to grow in their holiness. They
don’t look at what has already been
done and decrease from there, but
rather they add a little more content
each day to their Jewish identities and
especially to those of their youth and
children. And so, he askes his readers,
“What will you do”?
Well, we will light our community
Hanukiah and hopefully it will
illuminate our hearts and the hearts of
all members of our blessed people in
order to find the right way to forge a
strong Jewish identity that allows us to
be knowledgeable and proud of our
roots.

Shalom, I would like to thank everyone who helped with the plan to invite members of the Moorestown Jewish Association, (MJA), to our Religious School Open House in October, hoping that they will decide to send their kids to our school. We had learned that MJA lost the educational component they set up and we felt this could be a two way mitzvah. Phil Dix, Melissa Schrier and Stacey Blacker met with a representative of MJA and spent enormous energy and time working to make the finances enticing. Our faculty had the rooms looking amazing and had prepared short, hands-on classes for our guests. We had previously engaged a speaker on bullying which became part of the morning. NO ONE CAME, not one person! Our parents came early with offers of help and stayed for the program. Seeing these wonderful people eased the pain and disappointment. And then Pittsburgh happened! We held an amazing vigil and saw people of all faiths colors, ages come together in peace and solidarity. This is community. This is why we belong to a synagogue. This is US! So, onto kinder thoughts—we are taking part in a project brought to our attention by BJE called BIM-BOM. It is animation done with clay, construction paper, cell phones and creativity. Our teachers had so much fun learning the process! They will soon be teaching it to the students who will vote on the subject they want to animate. You will all be invited to see the final show. Another new venture will be pairing with a school in Israel. This is being put together by the new Shaliach through Federation. Our students will visit an Israeli classroom via skype. We are hoping to begin this by February. I don't know how he does it, but Robert Bliss keeps coming up with the most diverse and amazing programs for the Hanukkah party, sponsored by Men's
Club. This year it was the Philadelphia Spin Coalition - an interactive hula hoop event. In addition to this super program, there was singing, dreidels and chocolate gelt from Sisterhood, holiday food and lots of fun. The community Hanukkah Menorah was lit each night of Hanukkah. Hope you got to go to Wood Park in Cinnaminson to see it. Thank you, thank you to Lt. Rich Calabrese, acting chief in Cinnaminson, for talking to our students and our board about security and safety. He helped the kids feel more secure and is working with our security committee to address anything we can do to amp up measures already in place. As one of our faculty stated, “These kids have all grown up with school shootings and lockdowns. It's not new to them.” Such is our world. As we approach the secular New Year, 2019, my wish for all of us is to be kinder more caring individuals so that we can know peace and love in our homes, at Temple Sinai, and in our world.

Team up with Jewish Federation to give your child The Gift of Israel
Gift of Israel is a cooperative savings program, co-funded by families, synagogues, and the Jewish Federation of Southern New Jersey that provides funds toward educational programs in Israel for participating students. Participants may use their funds toward any authorized supervised trip of ten days or more, such as a Confirmation or teen summer trip. Or a semester of college study in Israel or young adult Israel experience. Grades 3—6 are eligible to enroll. Enrollment and yearly deposits can be made online through Jan. 15. Each year when the family deposits $150, Temple Sinai and the Jewish Federation will together match the family $150 If the family withdraws from the program, the family is refunded the monies they have de-posited, losing the matched amounts. Chil-dren must be enrolled in Jewish education through tenth grade. They and the family must also remain members of a synagogue in good standing. Contact Debbie Broudy at [email protected] for more information. Register your child today by visiting www.JewishSouthJersey.org /goi

cart each time you go to the supermarket.
Items Most Needed: Cereal and oatmeal Tomato/pasta Sauce Canned fish Peanut butter Jelly Rice
Canned fruits and vegetables
Pasta & Pasta Sauce Boxed Milk Baby food, diapers & formula
Also … Pasta & Pasta Sauce Gravy Maccaroni & Cheese Rice For the Bread of Life Food Pantry
Hat, Gloves, Mittens & Scarves Donated
Again this year, the collection of hats, scarves, gloves and mittens was amazing. This annual winter drive yielded a nice supply that went to Oaks Integrated Care in
Cherry Hill, a nonprofit organization dedicated to improving the quality of life for
children, adults and families living with a mental illness, addiction or developmental disability in New Jersey.
Thanksgiving Turkey Collection Thank-you everyone for your Thanksgiving and frozen turkey donations to the Bread of Life Food Pantry. We had a fantastic response. Temple Sinai delivered 27 turkeys this year thanks to the efforts of Harold Minkoff, Gary Golden, Phil Dix and Jill and Hank Croft. Thanks to all those who contributed either turkeys or money to buy turkeys.
Toiletry Item Collection Toiletries donated by Temple members were delivered to the Gloucester Special Services District to be used in the South Jersey Migrant Program. The collection continues so bring in toiletry items and deliver to the Temple Office.
Jewish Federation Food Pantry Sharri Jonas, Director of Volunteers, at the Jewish Federation Food Pantry, thanks Temple Sinai members for their support of the Jewish Federation Food Pantry during food drives and throughout the year. The Holiday Food Sort was held in late September. Before the "sort" the shelves were almost empty. After the volunteers sorted and stacked the donated food, the hope was that there would be enough to distribute for the next four months. But now the need is strong again. Please be generous in your donations. Nancy Schwartz
Dreidel/Angel Project of the Bread of Life Food Pantry thanks the participants: Shari Hyder, Ellen Goldberg Weiner, Rose Rose, Debbie Roberts, Marilyn Staiman, Marcia Blacker, Esther Bliss and Dorothy Minkoff. Their gifts brought joy to children in need while finding it fun to shop with a specific wish list.

Help A Friend Fund
Let’s wrap ourselves in the love and support of our members. Continuity of Jewish life is extremely important, and Temple Sinai does not deny membership or religious school participation due to financial difficulties. Belonging to a Synagogue can be very difficult financially on the family and for some families, the Help a Friend Fund is truly a blessing. Help these families keep Temple Sinai and Judaism a part of their lives.
