    KSSR Curriculum Content

    Writing

The learning standards for writing begin with pre-writing skills, which

addresses penmanship, the formation of letters, words as well as numbers in

clear print. Specific learning standards are attributed to penmanship so that

even from a young age, pupils are taught good writing habits. Special

attention should be given in order to strengthen the muscles of the hand, develop visual skills, enhance gross and fine motor skills as well as develop

hand-eye coordination to help pupils acquire penmanship. Correct formation

of letters of the alphabet is important in order to help pupils write neatly and

later write words, phrases and sentences legibly. By the end of Year 2, pupils

will master the mechanics of writing and then learn to write at word, phrase

and sentence levels. Specific writing activities devised during lessons will

enable pupils to begin writing for a purpose as stipulated in the learning

    standard.

For average learners, writing activity such as fill in the blanks would be

    appropriate to practise writing words.

Outline 1: Ask them to write words in a neat legible print.

Outline 2: Make sure they write in lower case letters.

Outline 3: Make sure they are able to identify the correct words to its

The writing activity can be preceded with writing sentences in neat legible

print. Reading skill is being integrated for this activity. It is suitable for both

    intermediate and advanced learners.

Outline 1: Make sure that the teacher brainstorms and discusses the

passage with the pupils before answering the questions.

Outline 2: Make sure the pupils are using the correct tenses.

Outline 3: Make sure the pupils write in simple, full sentences.

3.1.2 Able to write numerals in neat legible print:

    a) numeral form

    b) word form

The writing activity involved writing numbers either in numeral form or word

form. A good writing exercise for this learning standard is to have both forms

    simultaneously.

Outline 1: The teacher must present and let pupils to identify the

    numbers correctly.

Outline 2: Make sure the pupils write in lower case letters.

Outline 3: For weak pupils, the teacher can ask them to complete

question 1 10. As for average and advanced learners, they can

    complete the whole exercise.
