Second Collections

The Pontifical Good Friday Colletion September 12-13, 2020

THIS WEEKEND… Since it was not possible to take up this collection on Good Friday as usual, Pope Francis has asked our parish to support the Pontifical Good Friday Collection this weekend. This collection helps Christians in the Holy Land. Your support helps the church minister in parishes, provide Catholic schools and offer religious education. It also helps to preserve the sacred shrines. The wars, unrest and instability have been especially hard on Christians. In these times of cri-sis, the Pontifical Good Friday Collection provides humanitari-an aid to refugees. Please be generous!

Mission Cooperation Appeal Lay Mission-Helpers Association

September 19-20, 2020 NEXT WEEKEND… we will take up our collection for the Misson Cooperation Appeal. The Mission that our parish is supporting this year is the Lay-Mission Helpers. One of our own, Karen Hunka, served in Ghana with the Lay Mission-Helpers for over a year before being evacuated due to the Pandemic. She is waiting anxiously for the pandemic to sub-side so that she can go back and work at. St. Ann’s Senior High School for Girls and in the diocesan financial office where she uses her accounting skills. She will speak to us next weekend in more depth about the need for us to help the Lay Mission-Helpers. More information about her work can be found at https://khunkainghana.blogspot.com/. Information about Lay Mission-Helpers can be found at www.laymissionhelpers.org.

The Twenty-Fourth Sunday of Ordinary Time

The first reading for today is taken from the Book of Sirach which belongs to a group of seven scriptural Books referred to as the Apocrypha or hidden books. These books are frequently not included in Protestant Bibles. Martin Luther, when he broke from the Catholic Church, omitted them because they were written in Hebrew not Greek. He considered them as irrelevant. Sirach’s book is a defense of Judaism. He writes to defend the religious and cultural heritage of Judaism against the challenge of Hellenism (a philosophy and life style of the Greeks including the Jewish adoption of Greek gods). He aims to explain to his fellow Jews in Palestine, those exiled from enemies who conquered the Jewish, and pagans that wisdom abounds in their own religion and culture. The passage that appears in today’s liturgy teaches that deceit and dishonesty will one to social isolation. The wise man will not seek vengeance when he is wronged but will remain faithful to his faith in God to show mercy as does God to sinners. The opening verse decrees that the sinner who abounds in all stages of anger for revenge is tenacious in his vengeance, but God’s memory of one’s sin is equally tenacious. The wrong doer denies his ability to forgive. The rule at this time is “an eye for an eye.” Sirach is teaching a religious advance unheard of during his time. He refers to the commandment of loving one’s neighbor. His ideas become Jesus’ addition to the original Covenant. The Gospel passage narrates Jesus’ concept of forgiveness as an answer to Peter’s question about forgiveness. Jesus’ reply with the often used number seven, in a symbolic way, to indicate that forgiveness has no stopping, until the sinner stops with repentance. As is His custom, Jesus expands his teaching with a parable to clarify or simplify His meaning. Parables are used to compare that which is known with the unknown or new concept being presented. The parable story begins with a king and his servant who has borrowed a huge sum of money. A talent is 6,000 denarius and a denarius was the daily wage. The amount owed was equal to 60 million days of wages or 191,000 years of wages The punishment for not payment of such an amount was a common procedure that placed the borrower and his family into slavery for such a debt . The one demanding repayment can set an example for other to avoid non-payment of a debt. The continuing action of the king is the one setting the example of forgiveness and mercy; for he, after hearing a promise of repayment from the servant, forgives the debt. The huge amount owed is to further God’s ample power of mercy to one who seeks reconciliation. Now the servant who has had his debt forgiven seeks repayment from another servant. The forgiven

servant learns that his fellow servant cannot repay, that fellow servant is punished. The king, here symbolic of

God, learns of this ungrateful servant and tortures him. Jesus’ story illustrates the words from the Our Father

Prayer. Recall the part “and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us” from this perfect prayer. Jesus has fully illustrated the concepts of mercy

and forgiveness.

DIOCESAN LENTEN APPEAL (DLA) 2020

Our DLA total pledges have increased to $46,799 and the amount collected is $43,876 with 179 households having contributed. THANK YOU SO MUCH for your generosity and prayers which enabled us to surpass our Diocesan Target ($29,241) and Total Goal ($39,241), gaining at least $14,635 for our Parish needs.

10-YEAR LOAN REPAYMENT REPORT

To date, we have paid back $122,105.22 (including $11,181.63 in interest) on our $300,000 loan plus $35,294.54 interest. Because of extra payments made early, and the temporary suspension of interest payments recently, loan amortization is 20 months ahead of schedule, with full repayment expected in October, 2026, and a projected parish savings of $10,200.29. THANK YOU FOR YOUR VERY GENEROUS ON-GOING WEEKLY SUPPORT of St. Flor ian Par ish during

the COVID-19 restrictions. May Our Lord continue to bless you and your families and our Parish Family as well!

Read Fr. John’s Homily at www.saintflorian.org under the “Parish Life” tab.

EUCHARISTIC ADORATION is a time when Our Lord leads the adorer to a closer relationship with His Blessed Mother. This is what He told a Benedictine monk by way of locution: “Entrust all things great and small to My Immaculate Mother….Allow her to form and instruct you. You will begin to experience the peace and joy of the Holy Spirit in ways that you have never known before. Where My Mother is welcomed and allowed to do her work, the Holy Spirit is poured out in the greatest abundance, and the graces and charisms of the Holy Spirit flourish for the upbuilding of the Church.” (In Sinu Jesu p. 68) For September 1-2, the following hours had only one adorer: 2 pm, 3 pm, 1 am, 2 am, and 4 am. At least two adorers should be present for each hour . Thank you.

CHURCH IS OPEN 24/7 for silent adoration of Jesus in the Most Blessed Sacrament in the Tabernacle.

Everyone is encouraged to stop in each daily if possible at a convenient time, and to sign our log-in time sheet so

that we can gauge participation in this. Help us toward perpetual adoration. These are unprecedented times that in-

vite our full turning to the Lord. Thank you for your response.
