The Twin Cities Chapter AFS regular meeting will be on Tuesday, October 2nd beginning at 5:00 p.m. at the Radisson Hotel in Roseville, MN. CMI Instructors, Ian M. Kay and Kevin Fleischmann will pre- sent “Gating and Risering Techniques Recommended by John Campbell.” About the Presentation… Ian Kay and Kevin Fleischmann, CMI Instructors, will present gating and riser techniques based on the re- search on Professor John Campbell and the effect of critical fraction solid on feeding per- formance. Campbell is best known to the American foundry industry for his theories on fill- ing and feeding of castings. Professor Campbell started out as a physicist, but involvement in metallurgy lead him to become a foundryman. He was the originator of the Cosworth Casting Process, and still is active in the industry assisting with the management of a num- ber of casting companies, and setting up new casting processes. Author of the two books on casting, he is currently on staff at the School of Engineering, Metallurgy and Materials at The University of Birmingham, UK. For members attending the CMI Gating and Riser De- sign Course, this will be an expansion on a topic typically not covered. For those who are not attending the CMI Course, this interesting topic will bring new insight into feeding per- formance. About the Speakers… Kevin Fleischmann is currently serving as Associate Di- rector of Education for the Cast Metals Institute, where he started in 2006 after graduating from Purdue University, studying Mechanical Engineering Technology. He instructs on the Introduction to Metalcasting course, Gating & Riser Design, and Analysis of Casting De- fects. Ian Kay, former Director of CMI now retired, has been the lead coordinator and instructor for hundreds of courses and remains well recognized and respected throughout the indus- try for his ability to interpret complex metallurgical data, particularly in the areas of gating and risering technology and casting defect identification and analysis, and relate the infor- mation in laymen's terms to a wide variety of audiences. He has been a regular speaker at many local American Foundry Society chapter meetings, regional conferences and AFS technical and management conferences. He has authored articles on metalcasting technol- ogy for MODERN CASTING magazine and acted as technical editor on many AFS books and publications. Kay also was instrumental in the development of the online training pro- grams now offered through CMI. In Case You Missed It... On Tuesday, September 11th, the TC Chapter AFS toured Cummins Power Generation and members were given an overview of the manufac-turing, applications, and services provided at the Fridley location. Cum-mins Power Generation Inc. is a worldwide provider of electrical generators and power generation systems, components, and services in standby power, distributed power generation, as well as auxiliary power in mobile applications to meet the needs of a diversified customer base. Approxi-mately 23 people were in attendance for the tour and the post tour dinner at Two Stooges Bar and Grill. The TC Chapter AFS thanks Cummins for their generosity!
