n 21 January a perfect baby girl was

born at Milnerton Medi Clinic, but

two weeks later her parents received

a call from the clinic to ask that they come

in for anurgent discussionaboutherTBvac-

cination.

Like every other newborn, Jordan Lee Ka-

gan was supposed to receive the standard

BCG vaccination at the age of two days. But

instead she was injected with a 40 times

more potent BCG culture from a vial that

was supposed to go to theatre for the treat-

ment of TB of the bladder. Jordans parents,

Dean Kagan andMelanie Thomson from Ta-

ble View, were told she was one of 19 babies

who received this erroneous injection and

the clinic was sorry.

They have now embarked on a six-month

antibiotic TB treatment, blood tests every

second week and x-rays every month to

check Jordan does not contract TB.

This is our first baby and in the first nine

weeks of her life I had to feed my babymedi-

cation with a syringe every morning, says

Dean.

Melanie has to keep her down and I feed

her. It stains everything, she screams ... I

hate that medication. Then she brings it up

again and I panic that she is not getting her

dose, he says.

Giving her the meds is the worst part of

every day, Dean says.

When we have to go for x-rays she just

screams and screams and screams. I cannot

sit in there when they have to draw her

blood. Call me a woes, if you want. But once

they could not find a vein and they had to

drawblood fromher foot. It nearly killedme.

Iworry, I stress.Wehave to go for counsel-

ling because we cannot avoid the fact that

this has put so much strain on us, he says.

Melanie says Jordan is generally healthy,

but her lymph nodes remain swollen and it

tookmore than amonth for her to regain her

birth weight.

What upsets them down most is, in spite

of a very caring and professional paediatri-

cian, they have no answers and they worry.

Yes babies cry, but now we are always

wondering. When I was pregnant I did so

many things tomake surewe have a healthy

baby, Melanie says.

The couple say the clinic promised to orga-

nise a panel of experts who can answer their

questions, but nothing has come of that.

We are shocked that they are so blas

about this.

If they really cared, they would have

checkedup onus.Wedid not hear from them

once since this happened, Melanie says.

ellville is to become a green haven,

with beautification of the Elsieskraal

River green belt planned.

TheGreater Tygerberg Partnership (GTP)

is behind the design framework planned for

this open space corridor.

It comprises a 470mcanalwitha surround-

ing green belt located along the western side

of Durban Road in Bellville.

According theGTP,work in the area start-

ed on Monday 13 April and is expected to be

completed by the end of June.

The project scope was determined in col-

laboration with the Citys parks department

and the Voortrekker Road Corridor City Im-

provement District. It will be managed by

the GTP and build on previous work under-

taken by the City.

Recreational opportunities

The projects aim is to create more recrea-

tional opportunities for citizens and boost

aesthetic appeal of the area, according to

the GTPs statement.

The end result is hoped to link adjacent

parks along the Elsieskraal River. This in-

cludes the JackMuller Park to the north and

Elizabeth Park to the south.

The organisation says reconnecting open

spaces along this belt will create a flow of

natural systems within the urban area.

Currently, green spaces along this belt are

fragmented.

At theheart of theupgrade is the regenera-

tion of the Bellville CBD, says the GTP.

The green belt is easily accessible to the

surrounding community and provides ideal

opportunities to reinject a sense of vibran-

cy, says the GTPs Kirsten Sloth-Neilson.

Interactive area

She says it will also make it an attractive

area for people to live, play andwork, which

could spark further investment.

Elements ... included improved urban

river management, dedicated walking and

cycling lanes, childrens play areas and inte-

gration between the green space networks

and non-motorised transport routes, Sloth-

Neilson stated.

Theproject formspart of theGTPsDesira-

ble Spaces Programme promoting clean,

safe, attractive and accessible public spa-

ces.Such spaces play an important role in

enhancing the urban environment because

they provide a sense of nature in an urban

setting as well as meeting the social and rec-

reational needs of communities.

Dean and Melanie are now consulting with

Professor Mark Cotton, head of paediatric

infectious diseases at Tygerberg Childrens

hospital.

According to Cotton, it is unlikely that so-

mething seriouswill come of this error, but

if one has an underlying abnormality, it

could be dangerous, he says.

He told TygerBurger the three to six

month TB treatment will be more than ade-

quate for the babies.

The doctors are being cautious, it is the

right decision. There is a very good team loo-

king after the children, the paediatricians

are following them. But the problem is, be-

cause it was an error, it is very stress provo-

king for families and the parents are very

anxious, he says.

Onehas tobevigilant in caseof problems,

hence theymust be on themeds. Some of the

babies had a severe local reactionwhich one

could see, but that is not a major concern.

According to Mediclinic Southern Africa,

the errors causing the incident have been

identified and rectified.

In a press release, they say their top priori-

ty is to ensure the babies health and safety.

In this regard we have contacted the ma-

nufacturers of themedication, a toxicologist

and a paediatrician specialising in infecti-

ous diseases in order to determine what

needs to be done.

All the parents of the babies involved we-

re contacted and they have consulted their

paediatricians. None of the babies have had

serious side effects and they are beingmoni-

tored by their paediatricians.

Mediclinic regrets this incident and has

formally apologised to everyone affected,

they declared.

Donderdag 9 April by die Corpus Christi-kerk

in Panorama plaasgevind. Marais se liggaam

is drie dae vantevore deur n bergklimmer in

n skeur op Tafelberg gevind.

Dit volg n n bykans vier maande lange

soektog. Die polisie in die Wes-Kaap het n

donker naweek gehad. Gert se dood is n storm

wat nog vir maande en jare gaan woed, het

kapelaan Christopher Horn in sy boodskap by

die diens aan honderde kollegas, vriende en

familielede van Marais ges.

Lt. kol. Andr Traut, dieWes-Kaapse polisie-

woordvoerder, het op 7April bevestig dat n lid

van die publiek op n erg ontbinde liggaam net

boMoltenostraat aan die voet vanTafelberg af-

gekom het, maar kon toe nie die identiteit van

die liggaam bevestig nie. Marais se vrou en

twee dogters het intussen die liggaam aan sy

klere en n armbandjie gaan uitken. Volgens

Traut is geen gemene spel vermoed nie.

Marais se vrou, Marietjie, het in Maart aan

TygerBurger vertel hoe Marais verlede jaar

met post-traumatiese stres gediagnoseer is n

n ineenstorting tydens n lykskouingop nver-

moorde kind. Sy het haar skerp uitgespreek

oor die strawwe omstandighede en werksure

waaronder polisielede gebuk gaan. Hy is in

Stikland vir depressie behandel en is kort voor

Kersfees ontslaan. Dae later het hy verdwyn.

Hy word oorleef deur sy vrou en twee dog-

ters, asook sy ouers en vier broers.

Bosbell residents want to reclaim Tielman

Marais park from vagrants, drug dealers

and users, as well as stop alleged sexual ac-

tivities taking place there.

The park adjacent to DF Malan High

School along the Elsies River green belt up

to De Lange Street, has been taken over by

people with no regard for any laws, a resi-

dent from neighbouring Bosbell wrote in a

letter to ward councillor Leonore van der

Walt.

Issues raised include law enforcements

slow reaction time.

If I see a drug deal or a sex worker doing

their business thenweneed a response time

within minutes and it doesnt help if some-

one comes three hours later or so.

Van der Walt replied that drug dealing

and prostitution remained a police man-

date and cited that the Metro Police, repre-

senting 3%of police presence in the city, did

not have the capacity to deal with crimes

that were primarily the polices priority.

Residents also queried why the park was

in dire straits while neighbouring Jack

Muller park was a success story.

The residents also requested Van der

Walt provide an action plan and five-year

projected budget for upgrading Tielman

park.

Van der Walt said: The Friends of Jack

Muller park (group) are very active. This is

also a district park meant to cater for a

much wider spectrum than the immediate

residents.

Tielman Marais park will never get the

same funding, unfortunately. Comparing it

to Jack Muller, the topography does not

lend itself to be a recreational area, she

said.

Van der Walt called on residents to make

a difference themselves.

She said an upgrade initiated by resi-

dents would be difficult and time consum-

ing, and a suggestion to fence in Tielman

park, would simply be too expensive. We

are talking about millions of Rands here.

A social development contingent visited

the park onMonday 23March. Their report

notes the departments reintegration unit

found three adult males and one female

drinking in the park.

Bellville police spokesperson Captain

FienieNimb said theywere aware of crimi-

nal activities at the park.

At their last communication, Van der

Walt and residents discussedmeeting to try

address concerns and plan a way forward.

However, residents said they wanted ac-

tion, not meetings.

Tielman Park a hangout for vagrants

A

police officer who allegedly tried

to commit suicide on Monday by

driving into oncoming traffic on

the N1 from Durban Road, is still in hos-

pital.

This was confirmed by provincial poli-

ce spokesperson Captain Frederick van

Wyk, who said the officer was off duty at

the time.

However, he couldnot saywhichpolice

station the officer was from.

According to our knowledge, the acci-

dent happened around 13:50. Two char-

ges of attempted murder have been

brought against the officer, Van Wyk

said.

Traffic spokesperson Maxine Jordaan

explained the entire incident: It is alle-

ged that apolicemanwas travellingalong

Durban Road. Instead of taking the on-

ramp onto the N1 towards Cape Town,

the officer is said to have taken the Dur-

ban Road entryway instead of the out-

bound lane directly into oncoming traf-

fic where he collided with a truck, she

said.

The incident happened just before

14:00 and it is alleged the policeman was

in some sort of distress, she said.

Jordaan confirmed that the officer sur-

vived the accident and went on the run

immediately. Heclimbedout of thevehi-

cle and tried to run away, but the police

had been notified and officers were able

to apprehend him.

The truck driver sustained no injuries,

she confirmed. The accident caused hea-

vy delays, with the scene only cleared af-

ter 18:30.

People were stopping to check what

was going on, Jordaan said.

Beaconvale Industria, Cape Town.

Atlantic Plastic Recycling CC proposes to increase their operations at their premises which would

require a waste licence. The project involves the recycling of plastic waste by-products into a form that can be reused. The

current recycling activities (grading, sorting, baling, grinding, washing and drying of plastic materials) have not exceeded

the operational area threshold (of 1000m). Due to the fact that these initial recycling activities need to be expanded and the

operational area threshold exceeded, a Waste Management Licence is now required in terms of the National

et gedurende die agtien maande wat

hy in die weermag was, het Gerald

Malherbe nie in die huis in Milton-

straat in Goodwood gewoon nie.

Die huis, wat eens aan sy ouers behoort

het, is een van die laaste sinkhuise in di

snelgroeiende voorstad. In die afgelope 49

jaar het Gerald alles sien verander, behal-

we hul huis. Die huis lyk nog net soos hy

gelyk het toe ek gebore is, s Gerald.

Hy beduie met sy hande na plekke wat

verander het sedert hy n kind was.

Daar oorkant was n kleinhoewe. Doer

was diebioscope; daaimense daarhet bokke

en goed aangehou. Ons het in vrede gelewe

alle rasse saam. Aan daai kant het nMos-

lem-antie gebly.WaardieGoodwood-rugby-

klub nou is, was n vlei waar ons as kinders

kanos gebou het. Dit was lekker jare.

Stokke en klippe

Hier was ook gangsters, maar nie soos

vandag se gangsters nie. Hulle het nog met

stokke en klippe baklei en niemet guns nie.

As ons na die babbie se winkel gegaan het,

het die gangsters ons sommer ge-escort.

Sy 70-jarige broer, Anthony, verskyn in

die deur agter hom en s: Vertel hom n

bietjie van die moordenaar.

Gerald kyk sy broer agterna, huiwer n

oomblik, maar besluit tog om te vertel. Sy

naam was Dickie. Hy het gesmokkel daar

in die vlei. Dickie, ja, ek sal nooit daai naam

vergeet nie. Hy was nie eintlik jou tipiese

moordenaar nie. Jy sien n ander ou het by

Dickie dop op skuld gekoop. Die ou het by

die slagter gewerk en Dickie het sy geld

gaan soek.

Vleis

Toe die ou nie Dickie se geld het nie, het

Dickie ges hy moet vleis steel by sy baas.

Die ou wou nie en hulle het baklei. Ja, ou

Dickie het hom dood gesteek. So, ou Dickie

wasdie eerstemoordenaarhier rond.Ek sal

nooit daai naam vergeet nie...

Die gedagte aan die dood laat Gerald in

die verte tuur. My suster het ook hier by

my en Anthony gebly. Sy is twee weke gele-

de dood. Ons sort nog die goed uit en so aan.

Ja, onswasnet die drie kinders.Onswas

maar arm, my pa het op die spoorwe ge-

werk. Ek het darem vir n elektrisin ge-

leer, maar ek kry nie werk nie.

April is health awareness month and with

this inmind, on 4 April Philip Turner, a Pa-

norama resident and advanced life support

paramedic, completed his 13th Two Oceans

ultra marathon.

Getmoving and get active. It will add ye-

ars to your life, he tells people around him.

Turner crossed the finish line at this ye-

ars Old Mutual Two Oceans Marathon in

05:29:58, adding another bronzemedal to his

collection.

But one does not have to be anultramara-

thon athlete who participates in internatio-

nal events like Turner to qualify as being

active.

He suggests people start takingpart in the

five kilometre timed park runs.

These events are great for everyone in

the family. I would encourage anyone who

is remotely interested in becoming fit to

start here. Find a park run in your area and

just arrive on the morning. Take the chil-

dren along and get them into ahabit of regu-

lar exercise. Five kilometres is within eve-

ryones reach and you can earn loads of

points with yourmedical aid for getting out

there and participating, he says.

The difference exercise makes today is

small but in the long run youwill add quali-

ty to your life as you get older, he says.

To keep fit, Turner tries to run about

70km a week. From November to January,

however, prior to the Two Oceans Mara-

thon, he runs up to 100km a week.

He leaves his car at work on a Monday

morning and runs between home and work

for the rest of the week.

He also dabbles in mountain bike races

inwinter and started participating in social

triathlons with his daughter recently.

nimal rescue centres are filled to capa-

city with animals looking for a loving

home.

About 90 % of them are perfect compani-

ons that will fill your life with joy.

The sad truth is that the majority will ne-

ver find a home unless more people start

adopting, says Jennifer Davies of Fisante-

kraal Animal Welfare (FAW).

Many people avoid adopting from animal

welfares because theyworry the animals are

somehow sub-standard, weak or sick, or

need expert care due to past neglect or abuse.

This is far from the truth. Most are well-

adjusted, healthy, happy, attractive animals;

many are even purebred. They come fromall

backgrounds, for many reasons.

She says reputable animal welfares such

as FAW do their utmost to establish the ani-

mals personalities and needs. They are vac-

cinated, dewormed, and sterilised.

People also dont adopt because they cant

face visiting shelters. Davies says: Seeing

all those little faces, each beautiful in its own

way, hearing all the barking and meowing

and the sheer volume of need is really over-

whelming. This is why we list our animals

on our website and Facebook page. You can

see what they look like and read about their

personalities ahead of time, she explains.

The key, says Davies, is to look with yo-

ur heart and head, and not just your eyes.

People often go for the exotic ones, pure-

bred animals, those with fluffy fur or quirky

looks, or with a sad story, while avoiding

plainer-looking animals, especially black,

brindled, or tortoiseshell ones.

Every animal needs ahomebut it is cruci-

al they are the right fit.

She recommends thinking carefully about

your lifestyle and home. Consider your

energy and activity levels, space, existing

animals, whether youre very house or gar-

den proud and have children, she says.

By being sensible, you can be the lucky

owner of an incredible pet to keep you com-

pany. Furthermore, you are saving more

than one life, youre also saving the next ani-

mal in need who takes its space in the shel-

ter, which makes you a hero.

hoekom ons voel oor katte soos

Ek het twee jaar gelede n

brief gestuur aan TygerBurger

oor katte wat my tuin gebruik

vir n slaapplek of toilet. Daar

word nou n toilet gemaak van

my kar wat onderdak staan,

asook my houtarea onder my

braai. Die raad wat aan my

gegee was, is plant hierdie en

daardie in jou tuin waarvan

die katte nie hou nie of spuit

hierdie goed daar. Hoekom?

Hoekom moet ek die koste

aangaan, terwyl die buurt se

katte oorneem en net al hoe

meer raak en almal kom

kuier in my tuin. Ek is nou

op die punt waar ek my hele

voorerf gaan plavei om van

hierdie diere ontslae te probeer

raak. Weer l die koste by my.

Daar gaan my liefde vir

tuinmaak en om n netjiese

tuin te h, want ek moet

verstaan n mens kan mos nie

katte in die huis hou nie. Wel,

ek gee nie om wat jy moet

doen om jou katte uit my erf te

hou nie. Ek is nou op vir

verskonings en wil nie meer

raad h wat ek kan doen om

finansile genot. Sirkusse het

nie wilde diere nodig om

suksesvol te wees nie. Meer as

35 lande het reeds die gebruik

van wilde diere in sirkusse

verbied. Kom Suid-Afrika, word

I have been reading a few

letters with regards to the cat

problem. In most it is abun-

dantly clear that ignorance is

bliss. Firstly, cats that have

been neutered or spayed do not

roam. They are homely beasts.

They also do not sing on

rooftops as their mating urge

was removed by their local vet.

Cats do not poo on lawns, grass

etc. They bury their surprises.

They also do not dig up plants

to do so but would opt for a

clear piece of earth.

So if one looks at the problem

from an unemotional standpoint

one would come to the conclusi-

on that the deviant cats are in

fact strays and have no owners.

The solution: contact your local

SPCA. They will send an

inspector to your area. They

will make sure that all the cats

are in fact spayed, neutered and

registered. With a bit of entice-

ment they can even set traps to

eradicate the strays.

Positive action gets positive

results. The blame game does

not. PS. The chappy with the

pellet gun needs help.

kom afpak by hul huise? Of is dit die

idee van die naderende winter wat hulle

so suur maak?

Nee wat, kom ons maak n plan en

glimlag vir mekaar. En jy sal verbaas

wees hoe maklik mense terug glimlag.

Glimlag en die hele wreld glimlag saam

met jou. Dink net hoeveel vroliker kan

die lewe hier tussen die Tygervallei-heu-

wels wees as ons di raad volg?

A popular Xhosa conversational course

skoolvakansie n sangprogram vir die seni-

ors van die Tygerberg-dienssentrum vir be-

jaardes en mobiele etes aangebied, wat die

seniors se harte gesteel het.

Celise is op 2-jarige ouderdom gediagno-

seer met n rugmurg-gewas (Astro Cytoma)

en het op 5 jaar ophou loop. Die verhaal

van die talle operasies wat op Celise uitge-

voer is en hoe die Here vir hierdie familie

deur gebed ingetree het, is aangrypenddeur

Igor Rix, hul pa aan die seniors vertel, s

Linda Louw, bestuurder van die sentrum.

Die twee het liedjies gesing soos Mamma

Mia, Lepell, Sonneblom uit Bethle-

hem en Somer-Kersfees en toe afgesluit

met twee duets. Louw s die talentvolle sus-

sies het vir n aangrypende oggend by die

sentrum gesorg. Vir die bejaardes was dit

n eye opener wat n gestremde kind vir ie-

Pa is hoogs ontsteld nadat werkers,

wat hulself glo as Eskom-werkers ge-

identifiseer het, digby sy huis glo die

duur herinneringstuin aan sy ontslape dog-

ter ontheilig het.

Boonop het dieselfde werkers n week la-

ter teruggekeer om verdere snoeiwerk daar

te kom doen aan n groot boom waaronder

die tuin gele is, omdat dit glo n invloed

op Eskom se oorhoofse drade het.

Di bedrading en gesnoeide boom is gele

in n servituut-pad in die singel in Blomtuin

waar Ian le Roux en sy vrou, Marieta, woon.

Dit was juis die gesnoeide takke wat die

tuin verwoes het wat hulle vir hul dogter,

Shani, opgerig het, s Ian.

Servituut

Werkers kom redelik gereeld om hier

diens te kom doen as gevolg van die servi-

tuut van so 4 tot 5 meter in ons singel. Dan

ontvang ons gewoonlik n brief voordat eni-

ge werk daar verrig word.

In di geval, s Ian, het hulle geen kennis

van Eskom ontvang nie.

Toe hy die aand vanWoensdag 1 April van

sy werk by die huis kom, het hy gesien hoe

di swaar, gesnoeide takke die tuintjie van

Shani verwoes het.

Ek en my vrou het die tuin geskep en

mooigemaak met feetjies en klippies en fon-

teintjies. Ons het sowat R25 000 bestee om

di tuintjie op te rig, s n steeds woedende

Ian.

Sy dogter is net meer as n jaar gelede, op

10 Februarie, oorlede. Hulle het die tuin

heeltemal opgeneuk en het redelik diep in

my erf gesny aan die groot, ou boom.

Die voorman het ges die boomtakke

mag nie nader as 1,5 m van hul werkarea

wees nie. Dit ws nie, s Ian.

Hy was so ontsteld dat Ian in een stadium

gesweer het as een van di werkers sy erf be-

tree, hy hulle voorwaar sou skiet.

Ek was beslis ni aangenaam met di

voorman nie.Daardie groot ouboomse tak-

ke het binne-in my erf, reg bo-op Shani se

feetjietuin, geval.

Kettingsae

Met hul terugkeer die volgende Dinsdag

om verder te kom snoei, het diman en twee

van sy werkers glo kettingsae gaan haal en

ek het hulle my erf belet, s Ian.

Hy s die tuintjie is met die grootste liefde

gemaak. Ek is nog bitter rou (oor Shani se

dood). Ekkonnognie bydaardie tuin ingaan

nie. Dis asof hulle dit ontheilig het.

Die boomhet so nmooi dak oor die tuin-

tjie gevorm; daar was lanterns en lampe en

fonteintjies...

Ian s hy het twee keer probeer omEskom

te skakel om n amptelike klag te l.

Hulle het albei kere die foon in my oor

neergesit, s Ian.

JoleneHenn,Eskomseprovinsialewoord-

voerder, het ondersoek ingestel na die voor-

val.

Hul bevinding was as volg: Blomtuin is

nie binne Eskom se bedieningsgebied nie en

Eskom het nie enige werk by hierdie adres

of in hierdie area verrig nie, s Henn.

Die werkers waarna hier verwys word,

is definitief nie Eskom-werkers nie, ng is

hulle Eskom-kontrakteurs.
