UCSF Transplant 2012:

Today’s Realities, Tomorrow’s Possibilities

Course ChairJohn P. Roberts, MDProfessor of Surgery

This 2-day conference presented by the Division of Transplant Surgery and the Heart & Lung Transplant Program provides a unique opportunity to hear UCSF Transplant experts present the latest trends in transplantation. This conference encompasses heart, lung, liver, kidney, and pancreas transplant topics and offers both general sessions and organ specific sessions relevant to multiple practice specialties. General sessions will include the future of transplantation, allocation challenges, stem cells, T regulatory cells as new immunosuppression strategies, mechanical circulatory support, the obesity epidemic and its implications for transplant and partnering with technology. Organ specific clinical tracks will focus on current issues and patient management strategies appropriate for each area of specialization.

Target Audience: The target audience is a broad cross section of health care professionals who care for pre and post-transplant patients. Heart, Lung, Liver, Kidney and Pancreas transplantation will be discussed. The symposium content is designed for community/referring physicians, transplant nurses, coordinators, administrators, nurses, advanced practice nurses, pharmacists, social workers and all members of the health care team who are interested in expanding their knowledge of transplantation.

Objectives 1 Apply new skills in the understanding of the organ allocation

process and new strategies to increase organ availability.

2 Increase compliance in the treatment of transplant related complications and infections.

3 Apply the latest research on the treatment of rejection across the spectrum of solid organ transplantation.

4 Report on the latest research on treatment for hepatitis C.

5 Describe the impact of obesity and diabetes on transplant recipients both pre and post- transplant.

6 Improve performance in the management of diabetes, including surgical options.

7 Increase the CHCP’s understanding of the impact of transplantation on the lives of patients, their families and the donor families.

8 Apply latest trends in heart/lung transplant management, including use of VADS and ECMO.

9 Apply innovations in pediatric solid organ transplant.

10 Discuss new technologies designed to facilitate communication between health care providers and patients.
