CriteriaA textbook must meet all of the following criteria to be considered for the Open Textbook Library:

● Has an open license that allows for derivatives ● Is a complete book (not individual chapters) available as a portable file

(e.g. PDF, ePUB)● Is currently in use at multiple higher education institutions, or affiliated

with a higher education institution, scholarly society, or professional organization

● Is an original textbook (not a derivative of another textbook) or is for an entirely new audience

Open Textbooks Review Criteria:Comprehensiveness - does the text cover all areas and ideas

Content Accuracy - Is the content accurate?

Relevance Longevity- Is the content up-to-date, are updates easy to make?

Clarity - Is the text written clearly and uses appropriate terminology ?

Consistency- Is the text internally consistent in terms of terminology and framework?

Modularity- Is the text easily and readily divisible into smaller sections?

Organization Structure Flow - Are the topics presented in a logical clear fashion?

Interface- Is the text free of interface issues?

Joyner Library Alternative Textbook Program

This program was developed to encourage faculty at East Carolina University to explore and use alternative texts such as Open Access textbooks, freely available articles and books, Open Educational Resources and/or library-licensed resources in lieu of assigning traditional textbooks.

First year there were over 35 applicants 2016 – 15 winners*2017 – 16 winners

• Greater consideration will be given to applications that provide a greater cost savings to students, or require creation or adaption of course material

Our Goal:Over next two years, ensure that the top-30 courses taught in college classrooms across North Carolina have access to high-quality, open, free textbooks.

Fall• NC LIVE will host Faculty and Librarian workshops across the state.• NC LIVE will build and populate statewide repository for top-20 courses.• Interested faculty can apply for $1K adoption grants.

Spring• First wave of courses will be taught using OER textbooks.• NC LIVE will begin calculating ROI.

Launch Schedule

• Eligibility: The instructor must be employed at an NC LIVE member institution (full list at nclive.org/about/members).

• Savings: The cost savings to students must be significant. This is calculated via the number of students and sections to be taught over next two years and the cost of the commercial textbook being replaced.

• Readiness: The instructor should be ready to adopt an open textbook.
