    Police Equipment in the United

    KingdomNormal DutiesBasic headgear is a peaked cap for men, and a round bowler style hat forwomen. All officers wear a black and white (red and white for the City ofLondon Police) diced band (called Sillitoe Tartan) around the hat, adistinction first used in Scotland and later adopted by all forces in GreatBritain.

    Riot Gear

    For protection, officers performing riot control will often wear protectivehelmets and carry riot shields. These are designed to protect the wearerfrom those dangers that come from direct melee and hurled objects suchas bottles and bricks. To provide even greater protection, the protectiveequipment often provides ballistic protection.

    Pepper Spray- Pepper spray is capsaicin. It typically comes in canisters,which is often small enough to be carried or concealed in a pocket orpurse. I can also be concealed ring and also you can get pepper spray

    projectiles.Tear Gas- It is used to temporarily incapacitate through irrtation of eyesor the reparatory system. It can also be used as a hand-held fired out of acanister.

    In the UK when large demonstrations take place that are deemed

    unstable, the territorial police force responsible for the demonstration inthat area will usually deploy police support units wh0 are trained in riottactics.

    PPE RegulationsPPE is defined in the Regulations as all equipment

    (including clothing affording protection against the weather)which is intended to be worn or held by a person at work andwhich protects him against one or more risks to his health or

    safety, e.g. safety helmets, gloves, eye protection, high-visibility clothing, safety footwear and safety harnesses

    HelmetsA helmet is a form of protective gear worn on the head to protect it frominjuries. All helmets attempt to protect the users head by absorbingmechanical energy and protecting against penetration.

    Riot ShieldsRiot shields are lightweight protection devices deployed by police andsome military organizations. Most are a clear polycarbonate, though someare constructed of light metals with a view hole. Riot shields are almost

    exclusively long enough to cover an average sized man from the top of thehead to the knees. Some riot shields are designed to be bullet resistantagainst low velocity handgun and shotgun ammunition, but most are not.
