The Electromagnetic Department carries out its research and teaching work in different areas of
electromagnetics, with applications in the field of antennas, electromagnetic compatibility, numeric
methods and the study of field interaction with biological systems. This work is supported by two
laboratories, one for the field of antennas, the other for electromagnetic compatibility and both are
equipped with a comprehensive range of measuring instruments and advanced numerical simulators
for the study and electromagnetic characterisation of both components and complex structures.
Research objectives The research topics of the Electromagnetics Department concern:
Theoretical and experimental characterization of plasma antennas: a mathematical model has been
developed which simultaneously resolves both Maxwell’s and Boltzmann’s equations, allowing the
evolution of the plasma parameters to be followed in terms of intensity and the frequency of the
electromagnetic signal used to switch on the plasma itself.
The interaction between high-intensity impulses of the magnetic field and the human chest area
with the aim of characterize the phenomenon of the magnetic stimulation of the heart.
Remote monitoring via electromagnetic impulse signals or via human physical activity, these
being breathing and cardiac pulsing.
Characterization the electromagnetic systems used to help the mobility of blind or partially-
sighted people
Designing a system of antennas for use in an anechoic chamber for defining the reverberations in
an electromagnetic field and thereby replacing the mechanical mixers currently used.
Designing a reverb chamber for the heat treatment of dielectric material with the aim of
disinfecting parasitic organisms or an acceleration of the chemical process in treating surfaces.
The study of wide band electromagnetic impulses generated within a space station and evaluation
of interference with on-board equipment and telecommunications systems.
