ADVISORY ABOUT VARIABLE ENROLLMENTSEnrollment numbers in our Conversation and Conversation Plus programs vary greatly from month to month. If our placement tests indicate that a student’s English proficiency level does not permit placement in a 4-week program class, we may place the student in 4 weeks of study in our 10-week Communication and Culture program or we may provide a combination of classes and individual tutoring to ensure a full-time program of 20 hours per week for 4 weeks. Alternatively, we may decide to place all 4-week program students in level-appropriate classes in our 10-week Communication and Culture program in order to provide a program of 20 hours per week for 4 weeks. When this happens the student’s 4-week program will have the features described for our 10-week Communication and Culture program (see page 6), not the features described on these pages for our 4-week programs. The tuition and fees for the student’s 4-week program enrollment will remain the same.

CONVERSATION LEADERSConversation Leaders are an integral part of both the Conversation and Conversation Plus programs. Conversation Leaders are American UC San Diego students and members of the community who actively participate in class with our students several hours per week.
Conversation Leaders provide students in these programs with the chance to meet and have meaningful interaction with native speakers of English.
ELI’s expert conversation instructors design and supervise the lessons and conversation activities so that the students’ time with the conversation leaders will have maximum benefit.

THE DIFFERENCES BETWEEN UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA, CALIFORNIA STATE UNIVERSITY, AND THE CALIFORNIA COMMUNITY COLLEGESThe University of California has 10 campuses, more than 220,000 students, and is designed for the best qualified students. Only the top 12.5% of California high school students are eligible for entry, but a much smaller percentage is accepted. Website: universityofcalifornia.edu
The California State University has 23 campuses, over 433,000 students, and is much more inclusive than the University of California system. The top 25% of California high school students are eligible for entry. Website: www.calstate.edu
The California Community Colleges has 109 campuses, over 2.8 million students, and provides the first two years of college education only. Students spend their first two years at a community college and then transfer to one of the campuses of the University of California or California State University, to complete their last two years of undergraduate study. APPLYING FOR UNDERGRADUATE ADMISSION TO UC SAN DIEGO It is difficult to enter UC San Diego as a foreign student in the first year. It is much easier to transfer from a California community college (after two years of study) into the third year at UC San Diego. In recent years over 90% of transfer students come from California community colleges. This is the best pathway to under graduate UC San Diego admission for most international students.

UC San Diego Extension provides advice and pathways to help students achieve work experience and enroll in a degree program at a university or professional school in the United States.
WORK EXPERIENCE: OPTIONAL PRACTICAL TRAINING (OPT)After one academic year (three consecutive quarters) of full-time study in a non-language program in the United States, students can apply for permission to work up to 12 months in their field of study as a practical application of what they have learned. This is called Optional Practical Training (OPT).
The International Student Services (ISS) staff will assist students with their application for OPT. The ISS staff has a very high success rate with OPT applications. They cannot, however, guarantee the approval of the application by the U.S. government.
Please note that the International Student Services staff does not assist with job search or job placement services.
For more information on undergraduate admission to UC San Diego, visit internationaladmissions.ucsd.edu. Students interested in taking UC San Diego or Extension courses should see the Intensive Pre-University program (page 9), the UPS program (pages 14-15), Business Certificate (pages 16-18), or the TEFL Certificate (pages 19-20 ).

It is especially difficult to get enrollment approvals for first-choice classes in our prestigious Economics department.
