Firstly I’d like to wish you all a Happy New Year.I hope you all had a restful break over the Christmas period following allthe hard work fundraising in December. In April 105E Clubs are being encouraged to hold a Disability Awareness Day.If your Club hasn’t made any plans to hold an event yet, would you please consider doingsomething for the MS Society? A number of those with MS are wheelchair bound so perhaps youcould raise awareness of wheelchair access to public areas in your town or have a stall in the towncovered in MS leaflets. I know there are very inventive Lions in 105E so you will no doubt think ofother ways to raise awareness. My own Club is holding its on 29 May 2016. Riders can raise fundsfor the Cardiac Centre at Lincoln County Hospital and/or The MS Society. If you or friends andfamily are keen cyclists and would like a gentle 50 mile cycle through the villages around Lincolnplease contact me for an entry form. A small entry charge of £5 will cover the cost of a t-shirt andlunch. All cyclists are asked to aim to raise a minimum of £50.Finally I would like to thank those Clubs who have already made donations for my chosen charity.I do appreciate it very much.

Despite an intention to disband Lioness Clubs Sleaford and District Lionesses have been very busy (as usual) assisting Santa with all his work. They visited an area of Sleaford with Santa on his sleigh and also helped him out when he visited the Four Seasons Garden Centre and Crazee Bongos. Furthermore, a Christmas Bingo Night included a massive hamper as a raffle prize and raised over £200 for local people... Lionesses also spent a day helping local primary children to decorate cakes for their Christmas Fayre.

What did Sleaford Lionesses do at Christmas?

Lionesses put their skills to good use again by gettinginvolved in a local Methodist Church Tree Festival. Thisinvolved decorating a tree with festive mice.During theChristmas period the Club presented bibsto the local Laffletics disabled sports group and LionessPresident Tracy Arnold and Lioness Suzanne enjoyed afestive meal with the Mayor and other town dignitaries. Finally, club members joined together to celebrate theseason with a meal at a local restaurant.Next year an Elvis Night, Golf Day and many otherevents are already planned to ensure the Club continuesto make a valuable contribution to 105E’s achievements.

TALES OF CHRISTMASFROM 105E

When the Wigston Town Centre Christmas Lights wereswitched on Jim Davies and Jo Hayward of BBC RadioLeicester found it impossible to get a sensible word fromLennie the Oadby and Wigston Lion... well Lions don’t speakdo they? And anyway where was Lion Chris Huscroft?

In appropriate headgear are Lions Margaret Erentraut, AnneSimons and Patricia Phillips. Who braved a windy night when a local Christmas Fayre inspired Woodhall Spa Lions Clubto stage a ‘Whisky Galore’ competition. Participants selectednumbers on a board to win one of several bottles on offer. £80was raised for the DG's wife’s appeal for Multiple Sclerosis.Despite some challenging weather conditions (yep WIND 1GAZEBO 0) a good representation of Lions was made as theClub continue efforts to raise their profile in the town.

It was a moving experience when Scunthorpe Lionstook Santa to see 9 year old Daniella who was aboutto spend a second consecutive Christmas in hospital.Daniella was desperate to see Santa so Lions madesure that her wishes came true. The delight seen inher face made it all worthwhile and she loved the‘Frozen’ doll that Santa gave to her.... Santa alsogave a small gift to every other child on ScunthorpeHospital’s amazing Disney Ward.

Santa Sleighs took to the streets all over our Districtthanks the magnificent effort of many clubs - this fineexample is the Vale of Belvoir Lions Club sleigh.

Notts-Derbys Hemlockstone Lions invaded TESCO atBeeston with their collecting tins and buckets to raisemoney for PASIC (Parents Association for Seriously IllChildren). A day in the store was spent handing outsweets to both adults and children as well as having asmall tombola of cuddly toys – as it was Christmas eventhe losers got a small prize! Lion Martin Grey (Leicester Host Lions Club) receiveshis 50 Year Service Award from DG Lion Paul Stafford

Martin Gray was invited to join the Leicester Host Lions in1965 after helping the Club do a leaflet drop. At that timehe was the youngest member of the Club at 33 years ofage and what an opportune invitation it was as 50 years onhe still serves our organisation. His only Club has beenLeicester Host although now living in Stone he does fromtime to time support the local Club there.Lion Martin says, ‘I think the main change in the last 50years has been been the introduction of Lady Members. Iwould say that at Leicester we got very limited benefit from this as our ladies had always supportedus so well never wishing to be members themselves. Every Club has its own character andLeicester Club, it seems to me, has still the drive and personality that was enjoyed 50 years ago’.Martin continued to recall, ‘Leicester Club used to have two Houses ( Lion House and Lion Lodge)which were homes for the elderly. The Club subsequently sold these to a professional HousingHousing Association donating the funds to a wide range of charitable causes’.Lion Martin was Club President in 1977 during which time he took the Club to Weinstrasse inGermany. ‘We visited Frankfurt and Heidelberg’ he says, ‘feted in Chateaux and on the Rhine, drankwonderful wines made by Weinstrasse member Lion Biffar (known as 'Biff the Wine') and visited theSiegfried and Maginot Lines. We remain friends with some members of the Wienstrasse Club to thisday and the Clubs still have regular Exchange visits. This is surely indicative of the fact that ourorganisation is a wonderful vehicle for friendship and service’.Martin also has some views on the future of Lions Clubs saying, ‘The future must depend on anability to maintain our membership. There’s a huge need for young members, it’s paramount, but inreality it’s a problem that was evident 50 years ago... Remember when I joined I was the youngestmember at 33’.On a lighter note Martin remembers that the Leicester Club had a 'Bad Taste tie Competition' whichwas hilarious as the winner did not even know there was a competition being staged. He alsoremembers the yearly big fundraising events, summer fete and and book sale and carol singing inthe town... all of these things being great for the profile of the Club and perhaps more importantly avital ingredient in maintaining the interest and commitment of members striving to make life just alittle better for so many deserving causes and individuals.

I was in Tenerife on holiday and visitedthe Lions charity shop in Los Cristianos. and then attended their meeting. I was made very welcome by their PresidentNorman Goodman OBE and wife Edna.Lion David Thorley (Secretary) was alsowelcoming and I even made a new Lionfriend, Mandi Ashwood, attending herthird meeting and to be ‘badged-up’ inthe New Year. Another new member was at the meeting, a journalist who iswriting a book. He volunteered to be PRO.I was told how fund raising had changed over the years. Gone the days of golftournaments and the like, now two charity shops provide the main source of Lions income.Helping local families and holidays for disadvantaged children are at the heart of fundraising for theClub and they discussed twinning with Lions in Poland and bringing children over for a holiday. The Sur Lions Facebook page is regularly updated and they attract visitors from all over the world. They are truly an International club. Even with just 16 members their club is the most proactive oneI’ve had the pleasure to visit.

Come on all you other Travellers - let us hear about your meeting with other Lions in the UK and abroad__________________________________________________________

Members of Lincoln Lions became enthusiastic football supporters recently as they adopted a localteam. The Heighington, Washingborough, Branston under 12’s team are pictured above proudlywearing a new kit provided by Lincoln Lions. Also pictured are Zone Chairman Lion Jean Bowden,Lion President Diane Burke, Lion David Helson and DG Lion Paul Stafford. It was thanks to LionDavid Helson (the Club’s Youth Chairman) that contact with the has led not only to the Lionsbecoming proud sponsors but also to an agreement that the team will represent Lincoln Lions in the2016 Lions Football Tournament. So it’s a definite double victory for all concerned!
