Last week we left the Corinthians in chapter two. This week we have leapt across to chapter three. You can see how difficult it is in the liturgy to develop Pauls line of thought when so much is left out. It would be like watching a football match and moving from the second quarter immediately to the last! Last week Paul ended by speaking of a true wisdom that can only be given by God, and not by the philosophies of the world. He ends chapter two by saying that those who are unspiritual cannot receive the gifts of Gods spirit and remain in foolishness. Then at the start of chapter three he writes crossly to them, calling them unspiritual, mere infants not ready yet to be fed solid food. The reason he speaks this way is that the community is divided into competing factions – as long as there is jealousy and quarrelling among you, you behave according to human inclination – not of the Spirit of God. He then speaks of the various ministers, Apollos and himself as mere servants with each of them building upon the work of each other. They are not in competition – I planted and Apollos watered, but only God gives the growth ... laid a foundation, and someone else is building on it.These images lead into the reading today, as Paul describes what it is that is being built. The community is called Gods Temple because in the community the Spirit of God dwells. This is a powerful image that will later be picked up by all the Gospels. It must have its foundation in the living experience of these early Christian communities. They experienced the power of Gods Spirit dwelling among them, and this led them to see themselves as living Temples. The divisions in the community risk destroying Gods Temple and this would be a sacrilege. Boasting because of belonging to Paul, or Apollos or Cephas is human foolishness and not genuine wisdom that is based on Gods Spirit. In the light of Pauls message, today might provide an opportunity to reflect on the teaching of Vatican II that all Christians are called to holiness, that all are created in the image of God and have been gifted with the Spirit of God. Matthews Gospel continues JesusSermon on the Mount, where, like Moses, Jesus teaches the community his code of behaviour. What he teaches sounds impossible, but it is what he lived and what some others have also been capable of living. Occasionally, in the midst of terrible wars and atrocities, we hear of people who have been able to rise above their own suffering and rage, to find in themselves the ability, the grace, of forgiveness. Such people speak of being determined not to let others control their lives and that in being able to forgive they find their own integrity and freedom. They become whole. When Matthew says, Be perfect as your heavenly Father is perfect’, I think this means something like being a whole person. The Greek word used here is telosand it has the sense of completion, of being whole, of having arrived at the end. With this is mind, Jesuscode of behaviour calls us to be whole people, and this is how we can also be holy people.

Jesus’ code of behaviour ...

Last week we left the Corinthians in chapter two. This week we have leapt across to chapter three. You can see how difficult it is in the liturgy to develop Paul’s line of thought when so much is left out. It would be like watching a football match and moving from the second quarter immediately to the last!

Last week Paul ended by speaking of a true wisdom that can only be given by God, and not by the philosophies of the world. He ends chapter two by saying that those who are unspiritual cannot receive the gifts of God’s spirit and remain in foolishness.

They are not in competition – “I planted and Apollos watered, but only God gives the growth ... laid a foundation, and someone else is building on it.’ These images lead into the reading today, as Paul describes what it is that is being built.

The community is called God’s Temple because in the community the Spirit of God dwells. This is a powerful image that will later be picked up by all the Gospels. It must have its foundation in the living experience of these early Christian communities. They experienced the power of God’s Spirit dwelling among them, and this led them to see themselves as living Temples. The divisions in the community risk destroying God’s Temple and this would be a sacrilege. Boasting because of belonging to Paul, or Apollos or Cephas is human foolishness and not genuine wisdom that is based on God’s Spirit.

In the light of Paul’s message, today might provide an opportunity to reflect on the teaching of Vatican II that all Christians are called to holiness, that all are created in the image of God and have been gifted with the Spirit of God.

Matthew’s Gospel continues Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount, where, like Moses, Jesus teaches the community his code of behaviour. What he teaches sounds impossible, but it is what he lived and what some others have also been capable of living. Occasionally, in the midst of terrible wars and atrocities, we hear of people who have been able to rise above their own suffering and rage, to find in themselves the ability, the grace, of forgiveness. When Matthew says, ‘Be perfect as your heavenly Father is perfect’, I think this means something like being a whole person. The Greek word used here is ‘telos’ and it has the sense of completion, of being whole, of having arrived at the end.

Name Badges

Wearing a name badge has more

to do with hospitality than it has

to do with showing off.

It allows the person you are

speaking to, to call you by name,

it assists people who may feel

embarrassed because they have

forgotten your name. It builds

community and helps us know

each other without the

awkwardness of having to ask.

Please fill in the small envelopes

on the table in your church with

your name clearly written and

place on the collection plate, or in

your Church box, or hand into the

Parish Office.

Badges are $17.00 and there is a

choice of a pin or magnet

attachment.

SONG OF PRAISE: Prayer of St Francis

1. Make me a channel of your peace. Where there is hatred, let me bring your love. Where there is injury, your pardon, Lord, and where there's doubt,

true faith in you.

2. Make me a channel of your peace. Where there's despair in life, let me bring hope. Where there is darkness, only light, And where there's sadness ever joy.

Bridge: Oh, Master, grant that I may never seek, So much to be consoled as to console, To be understood as to understand, To be loved, as to love, with all my soul.

3. Make me a channel of your peace. It is in pardoning that we are pardoned, In giving of ourselves that we receive, and in dying that we're born to eternal life.

Text & Music: Debastian Temple, © 1968, OCP Publications.

RECESSIONAL: The Fullness of God

1. Deep in Christ I pray you know the power He can give! May your hidden self grow strong! And may you live Strong in faith and built on love, until you know: How high and long, how wide and deep, the fullness of God.

2. May the God of Jesus Christ, the Father we serve Fill your mind that you may see, deep in your heart What hope his call now holds for you: His promise true: To fill your heart with power to live the fullness of God!

3. Know the way you learn from Christ: to live life anew! Let your heart be drawn to Him; Let Christ renew The hope in you to grow into Goodness and Truth! And living so you’ll come to know the fullness of God.
