Family members haveexpressed concern about howto contact their family duringan emergency or crisissituation, for a status check. As part of an ongoing effort tobetter serve the militarycommunity, the American RedCross announced that it willmove to a single telephonenumber for its emergencycommunication services.Beginning June 13, 2011, at8:00 a.m. EDT, all militarymembers and their familiescan use one number- 877-272-7337 (U.S. Toll

Free) to send an urgentmessage to a servicemember. The change meansthat all military members andtheir families can use thissingle number to initiate anemergency communication,

regardless of where they live.Sherri Brown, Senior VicePresident for Service to theArmed Forces said "U.S.military personnel and theirfamilies can remain confidentthat the Red Cross will bethere to keep them connectedwhen there is a crisis athome." A call to 877-272-7337allows Red Cross emergencycommunications services toput military personnel in touchwith their families following thedeath or serious illness of animmediate family member, thebirth of a service member's

child or grandchild or when afamily faces otheremergencies. Additional RedCross services such as casemanagement and emergencyfinancial assistance also areavailable. For those stationed

overseas, the three options forcalling will remain the same:calling 877-272-7337 direct, accessing the number througha military operator, or callingthe local Red Cross station. The Red Cross Service to theArmed Forces programprovides assistance to morethan 2 million servicemembers and many of thenation's 24 million veterans. The Red Cross providesemergency communicationslinking service memberswith their families duringtime of crisis; comfort and

care in military and veteransmedical facilities; access tofinancial assistance inpartnership with the militaryaid societies; information andreferral and assistance toveterans.
