YOUR INVITATION COULD CHANGE A LIFE
During the Shepherd’s Table service on July 24th I asked, “What first brought you to this worship service?” One man named a person who told him about the service. Then one who has been worshipping since the beginning pointed to Kenneth Barnes saying he invited her. Some others nodded in agreement with her statement. It turned out that everyone there said they were invited. Invitations make a difference. Study after study has shown that the majority of first time worship guests come by invitation, which means if we are not inviting, new persons are seldom in worship and the church is not likely to be growing.
I mentioned last month Herb Miller’s research on the importance of invitations. He identified the lack of invitations as one of the reasons mainline protestant churches have ceased to grow. In his research he found that persons in one mainline church averaged inviting someone to worship once every 28 years. When is the last time you invited someone? Something deeper than simply a visit to a worship service is at stake. It is a matter of caring for the soul of a person. Someone cared for your soul. If you are a Christ Follower, it is because someone, and for most of us more than one person, cared for your soul. They cared enough to offer an invitation, see that we were in church (for most of us our parents did this), taught Sunday School or were children or youth servants.
When I think of caring for someone’s soul, I remember the story told by former United States Senator Jonathan Dolliver. Senator Dolliver gave a dinner party for a some political dignitaries. There were senators, congressmen, judges, cabinet members and some foreign diplomats present. Also present was Senator Dolliver’s father, a retired United Methodist preacher. After the dinner, the senator noticed his father was engaged in a conversation with one of the foreign diplomats. As the Senator approached the two men, he heard his father say, “My brother, how is it with your soul?” Senator Dolliver did not think that was the time or place for such a question, so he edged his way between the men, breaking up their con-versation. It was only a few months later that the Rev. Dolliver died. At his funeral there were many large, beautiful flower arrangements. One arrangement, however, surpassed them all. They were from the for-eign diplomat with whom Brother Dolliver was talking the night of the dinner. The card said, “To the man who cared for my soul.” Will anybody be in heaven because you cared for their soul? It could start with a simple invitation.
See you Sunday in worship, as we worship the Lord of the Harvest, who asks us to join in His harvest. -
Rudy
