    1 GENERAL INFORMATION TGAS07B is a dedicated system used to acquire and display the parameters relating to point resistance (Qc), sleeve friction (Fs) and pore pressure (U) in the piezocone penetration tests. The system is provided with a 320 x 240 pixel transflective liquid crystal display (LCD) with backlighting and integrated touch screen.

    2 ACCESSORIES The TGAS07B system is supplied with: Oceanic cable

    To connect the electric probe and the control unit.

    Power cable To supply power to the control unit by means of the socket in-built on the penetrometer.

    Depth cable To connect the encoder to the control unit.

    Data cable To connect the control unit to a PC via an ethernet port.

    4 ELECTRICAL CONNECTIONS 4.1 Front panel indicators

    Indicator Description

    POWER It indicates when the system is on (led on) and off (led off).

    STAT This led flashes quickly when there is no GSM coverage, whereas it flashes slowly when the GPRS module is connected to the net.

    Connector Description

    Power Use this connector with the appropriate cable to power the acquisition system.

    Data This connector enables you to connect the system to a PC using a standard ethernet cable.

    Depth Use this connector with the appropriate cable to connect the system to the depth encoder.

    Cable It allows the connection to the electric probe using the oceanic cable.

    5 TURNING THE SYSTEM ON Before connecting any cable, make sure that the main switch is in OFF position. 1 Connect the power cable six-pole round connector (see

    picture on the left) to the system power socket (see picture on the right).

    2 Connect the encoder on the penetrometer to the system

    using the appropriate cable.

    3 Connect the oceanic cable to the system.

    4 Connect the three-pole connector of the power cable to

    the 12V DC socket of the penetrometer.

    5 Put the main switch in ON position.

    6 Make sure that the red LED located on the rear panel of

    the system (picture on the left) is on; if it isnt, see point 1 and 2 of paragraph 9.

    7 Soon after turning the system on, the graphic display lights up and a white page appears for a few seconds. After that the display will show the page here on the right. If the page doesnt appear, see point 2 of paragraph 9.

    8 After adjusting the contrast using the appropriate knob, wait until the system displays the main page.

    6 TURNING THE SYSTEM OFF 1 Put the switch of the system in OFF position.

    2 Disconnect the connector of the power supply cable from the penetrometer voltage socket.

    3 Disconnect the power cable six-pole round connector.

    7 ADJUSTING THE DISPLAY CONTRAST Adjust using the appropriate knob on the front side of the acquisition system, to the right hand side of the switch.

    8 PRECAUTIONS 1. Dont connect or disconnect any cable if the system is working. 2. Dont turn the system on before connecting it to all its peripheral devices. 3. Turn the system off only when the main menu is displayed. 4. We also recommend that the test files are downloaded on a PC as soon as the tests

    are completed. This would minimize any loss of data due to possible failures of the internal memory.

    9 TROUBLESHOOTING With reference to the starting phases, consult table below for advice on troubleshooting. 1 After putting the ON/OFF switch to ON position, the POWER red led doesnt

    turn on and the display doesnt show any writing. Advice:

    The cable hasnt been connected to the penetrometer power supply socket. 1.1 - Put the cable in. The penetrometer socket doesnt provide 12VDC 1.2 - Check the battery charge of the penetrometer. - Check the fuses of the penetrometer and, if necessary, replace them. Check the electrical connections of the penetrometer (see note 1). The power supply cable is interrupted. 1.3 Check the cable is not damaged using a multimeter and, if necessary, replace the cable (see note 1). None of the problems above. 1.4 - Call Pagani Geotechnical Equipment after-sale service.

    Note 1) The operations above should be carried out by skilled personnel authorized by Pagani Geotechnical Equipment. 2 The POWER red led is on but the display doesnt show any writing. Advice:

    The contrast of the display is not adjusted properly. 2.1 Adjust the contrast following the procedure in paragraph 7 at page 4.

    2.2 None of the problems above. - Call Pagani Geotechnical Equipment after-sale service.

    10 OPERATING THE ALPHANUMERIC PAD

    The alphanumeric pad works like the one in a mobile phone. You just have to press the key corresponding to the character you want to write on the display. The arrow pointing leftwards is used to cancel the character you have written, whereas the arrow pointing rightwards moves the cursor one position forward to write a new character. For example, to write the word TEST the operator will press the 7STU key 3 times, then -> once, 2DEF 3 times then ->, 7STU twice then -> and finally 7STU 3 times.

    11 OPERATING THE SYSTEM 11.1 Managing the tests

    11.1.1 Managing the sites To enter the test archive press TESTS MANAGER. Through this interface you can: 1 Display all memorized sites Use the UP and DOWN keys to scroll all the list of

    memorized sites.

    2 Cancel a site that is in the memory.

    To cancel a site from the memory digit its name using the keypad, then press DEL. The writing DEL will appear on the left of the name and the user will decide if he/she wants to cancel the operation or confirm it by pressing DEL again.

    3 Create a new site. Just write the name of the new site you want to create and press OPEN. The system will create the site and will display its content, which will be initially empty.

    4 Open an existing site. Digit the name of the site and press OPEN to see the list of the tests it contains.

    5 Cancel the whole memory Press ERASE to format the SD card located inside the system. If you carry out this procedure all the tests and settings of the system will get lost. For this reason the user will have to confirm the operation by pressing YES for at least 3 seconds. It is advisable to carry out this operation only in case of a memory malfunction.

    11.1.2 Managing the test Digit the name of the site you want to open by means of the appropriate alphanumeric pad and press OPEN to access the list of tests it contains. Through this page you can: 1 Display all the tests

    memorized in a site. Use the UP and DOWN keys to scroll all the list of the tests memorized in a particular site.

    2 Cancel a test that is in the memory.

    11.2 Managing the probes To access the probe archive in use press PROBES MANAGER. Through this page it is possible:

    to display all probes assigned to the system; assign a new probes; eliminate a previously assigned probe.

    To assign a new probe or modify one that is already present, just enter the parameters provided by the certificates supplied with the piezocone. In particular:

    1. NAME: is the name of the probe (e.g.. M34, ME56, MH200), 2. QC: indicates the calibration value of the point resistance sensor, 3. FS: indicates the calibration value of the sleeve friction sensor, 4. U2: indicates the calibration value of the pore pressure sensor, 5. TILT: indicates the calibration value of the inclinometer.

    To enter or modify these values just click on the cell required and use the alphanumeric pad to write inside the cell. If you press SAVE, the modifications you have made to the probe database will become effective. If you press BACK you return to the main menu without making any modifications. 11.3 Acquisition/display interface To access this interface you have to:

    Open the Site using the site manager interface; Open the Test using the test manager interface.

    If the test already contains some data, it will be displayed in the three relevant charts (Qc, Fs, U2). As previously said, the interface has an area where the three charts are shown. The depth is expressed in cm on the y-axis (that is the same for the three charts), whereas the x-axis represents respectively:

    the point resistance (Qc) expressed in MPa, the sleeve friction (Fs) expressed in kPa, and the pore pressure (U2), which is also expressed in kPa.

    If you press the keys marked with - and +, located on the right of the measure unit of each chart, you can change the display full scale. This operation is possible only in pause mode. At the top of the screen the instant values of Qc, Fs, U2, tilt, depth reached and speed are displayed. If one of these values exceeds the alarm threshold, the writing ALERT! or simply A! depending on the space available on the screen - is displayed instead of the value. Seven function keys are available on the right of the charts:

    1. + key: to display the subsequent two meters of test; 2. -key : to display the previous two meters of test; 3. TL key: to display the Tools interface; 4. DS key: to make (in acquisition mode) or display a dissipation test; 5. =>key: to start or continue a CPTU test; 6. ||key: to stop the acquisition of data during a test; 7.

    7 Keeping the electric probe raised off the floor with the pore pressure sensor well saturated, take the reading of the zero values. In this phase the GPS coordinates will be acquired too.

    8 Press END ZERO READING and the zero values will be saved; then the acquisition page will be displayed.

    9 Bring the piezocone to the land surface level and press =>.

    10 Select the full scale values for the charts, the alarm thresholds, the pre-hole and the piezocone and press SAVE , then press => again.

    11 Carry out the test until you get to the depth required.

    12 Press || to end and then press .

    11.4 How to download the tests Press DOWNLOAD TESTS in the main menu to activate DOWNLOAD MODE. The user will be able to set the IP address of the system by means of keys + and - beside the final figures. Press OK to start DOWNLOAD MODE. Press BACK to return to the main menu. Once the system is connected to the net, you can access its memory by entering Risorse del computer [My computer] and digiting the following in the address bar: ftp://[IP address] (e.g.. ftp://192.168.100.5). Use Windows copy-and-paste function to download the tests.

    11.5 How to use the GPS GPRS module 11.5.1 How to operate the GPS module The GPS module is used during the zero values reading phase. The display will show the GPS coordinates and the zero values of the piezocone sensors. The coordinates are expressed as follows:

    Coordinate Format Description Latitude ddmm.mmmm N/S dd: degrees (00..90)

    mm.mmmm: minutes (00.0000..59.9999) N/S: North/South

    Longitude dddmm.mmmm E/W ddd: degrees (000..180) mm.mmmm: minutes (00.0000..59.9999) E/W: East/West

    Press END ZERO READING to save the Cartesian coordinates in the file with the probe zero values. 11.5.2 How to operate the GPRS module This module is used by the acquisition system to send a CPTU test to an email address. It needs a mobile phone SIM card and a GSM antenna to operate. The PIN code of the SIM card must be disabled and the card must have a residual credit of more than 0 Euro. To eliminate the PIN code put the SIM card in a mobile phone and select Remove PIN. We suggest that you use a charge rate suitable for Internet use (SIM cards used in the Internet keys). 11.5.3 Connections to make

    1 Unscrew the plug to access the SIM card slot. Insert the card in the appropriate slot and press until you hear a click. Re-position the plug.

    2 Fix the antenna to a metal part of the machine with the

    appropriate magnet, which is inside the antenna. Position the antenna horizontally to make the system work properly.

    3 Connect the antenna to the GPRS connector.

    4 Connect the antenna to the GPS connector.

    11.5.4 Setting the GPRS module

    Before sending a CPTU test to your email address you need to set the GPRS module. Press WAN MANAGER to access the setting page (here below).

    The parameters you have to enter are as follows:

    APN (O): it indicates the portal address to access the GPRS net (which varies according to your phone provider),

    E-MAIL ADDRESS (M): it indicates the email address which you want to send the test made on site to,

    PRIMARY AND SECONDARY DNS (D1, D2): they are IP addresses to access DNS service (which vary according to your phone provider),

    USERNAME E PASSWORD (U, P): login credentials to access GPRS network (which vary according to your phone provider).

    To enter or modify these values, just press twice on the line corresponding to the parameter required, then use the alphanumeric pad to write the new value. The parameter selected is marked by an asterisk. Use the CAPS LOCK key change from capital to small letters and vice versa. The writing CAP above this key indicates that you are enabled to write in capital letters. Just press OK to save the modifications, otherwise press BACK 11.5.5 How to use the GPRS module

    If you want to send a test to your email address, just access the TESTS MANAGER section, open the site containing the test to be sent, digit the name of the test you have chosen and press SEND. As soon as the system acquires the command, it will start the procedure to get connected to the net and to the SMTP server. If the net coverage is good and server is not engaged, the system will get authenticated and it will send the email. If one of the previous conditions is not met, the acquisition system will display an error message and will return to the TESTS MANAGER page. Then the user can try to send the test again after a few minutes. The email will contain one or more attachments which respectively represent the files of the CPTU test (.CPT) and the dissipation test (.DPT).
