The Meaning of Lent: The Christian season of Lent begins with Ash Wednesday’s repentance and leads to Holy Week’s bitter story and Easter’s joy.

The word Lent is from the Anglo-Saxon meaning springtime.

Lent was originally a time when newly instructed Christians or “penitents” prepared for their baptism, confirmation and first Lord’s Supper at the Easter vigil.

Today Christians are invited to spend Lent’s 40 days in special personal house-

cleaning – worship and prayer, self-denial and giving for others – to prepare for Easter.

Lent calls us to look back on the impact of baptism on our lives. How are we doing, we who have died to sin and come alive to new life in Christ? In repentance we ask our Lord to clear our lives of sin.

The 40 days of Lent are like the 40 days Jesus spent in the wilderness in spiritual preparation, struggle with Satan, and choosing God’s will—the way of the cross. Events along the way include Ash Wednesday, the five Sundays in Lent, Palm or Passion Sunday and Holy Week.

The mark of the ashes, a biblical sign of humble penitence, is placed on

the foreheads of many Christians on Ash Wednesday as a reminder of our mortality and repentance.

Self-denial refers to the Christian practice of intentionally giving one’s time, energy and possessions for others, especially the needy, as Christ gave himself for us.

Page 2: Ushers=Marty & Lynn Nickels, Fellowship=Lorie Ciszek ... › mychurchwebsite › c3976 › ... · Wednesday’s repentance and leads to Holy Week’s bitter story and Easter’s joy

The word alleluia, a joyful cry of praise the Lord, disappears from our worship from Ash Wednesday until Easter, reflecting the solemnity of the season.

Colors displayed in the church are violet (for repentance) and black (for mourn-ing on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday).

Lent's Sunday Scriptures present a sweeping view of salvation history. Old Testament and Epistle lessons take us from the fall of Adam and Eve to the promise of resurrection. The gospel lessons show us Jesus' power pitted against Satan and the evils afflicting God's people.

Mid-week Wednesdays of Lent our 4pm informal worship will look at scrip-tures leading up to Good Friday and setting the stage for resurrection and revelation.

Lent’s 40 days (without Sundays) are the first half of a larger rainbow arch; the other half, the Easter season’s 50 days in which we celebrate our baptismal rebirth in Christ. The celebration continues in the church year with every Sunday as a ‘little Easter.’

After Easter the Pastor’s 10am Wednesday class will resume, ending its study of the Creed then shortly thereafter we’ll begin a study the Book of Revelation.

God’s blessings as you celebrate God’s continual revealing of Himself and his will.

Pastor Sherman

To top off your Fat Tuesday dinner with the perfect accompaniment, we are once again sharing this year-round favorite…

Amish Sweet Bread

Makes 2 loaves

2 cup 110-degree water 2/3 cup sugar 1 1/2 tablespoons yeast 1 1/2 teaspoons salt 1/4 cup oil 6 cups bread flour

Dissolve the sugar in the water. Add the yeast and allow to proof for about 10 minutes.

Add the salt to 2 cups of the flour, mixing well. When the yeast has proofed, add the oil and the 2 cups flour, mixing until

smooth. Add the remaining flour 1 cup at time. It usually takes most of the flour

measurement. Knead 10 minutes by hand or mixer. Place in a large, greased container, cover with plastic wrap or a damp towel

and allow to raise until doubled in size, about 1 hour. Preheat oven to 350 degrees. After it has risen, punch dough down and knead for about 1 minute. Divide

in half and shape loaves. Place into 2 well-oiled, 9-by-5-inch loaf pans. Allow to rise for about 30 minutes.

Bake 30 minutes, or until cooked through and bread is brown. Remove from oven and cool 10 minutes on a cooling rack. After 10 minutes, remove from pans and continue to cool.

This bread freezes well.

Easter Lilies

For three weeks beginning February 24th , we will have a table set up for donations for the purchase of Easter Lilies to decorate the sanctuary.

No more little order forms or separate collections, simply add what you can, as often as you can, and the sanctuary should be dressed beautifully in celebration of one of the most important days of our faith.

GOOD FRIDAY TENEBRAE SERVICE READERS

A sign-up sheet will be placed out or you may call office to volunteer to read some scriptures for the Good Friday service.
