As I begin this first Newsletter of 2011, I trust that everyone had a HAPPY NEW YEAR to date.
It has been a fairly quite first month (Jan), as I begin writing this newsletter. I anticipate completing this
section by March as new developments occur that are of interest to you. I first want to express my deep
appreciation to Warren Kent Keasler, 64-66 LT(jg), for his response to my inquiry about the location of the
USS Haynsworth, DD-700, “Commissioning Pennant”. Kent graciously offered to mail it to me completely
framed and ready for show. I will be bringing the pennant to this year’s reunion in Savannah, Georgia.
Update on plans to offer to those shipmates, with e-mail addresses, the opportunity to op-in for electronic
delivery is moving along slowly. Once I have it all resolved I will send an op-in e-mail to all that have e-mail
addresses that I currently know of. This brings the issue to mind that, in light of recent contacts with me,(by e-
mail), by a few shipmates, that some of you who receive the snail mail newsletter, have e-mail access that I am
unaware of. The only way I have of knowing if you have e-mail is if you tell me. Please, if you have NEVER
received an e-mail from me then you need to send me one if you decide to opt-in to on-line delivery of the news-
letter. I also have been in contact with some shipmates who have either changed their e-mail address or no
longer have one. I am doing this by telephone when I receive a “Failed Mail Delivery” from my server. Please
let me know when you change addresses or no longer access e-mail. This will save considerable time and effort
in keeping an active/current e-mail address book. This problem also exists with home mailing addresses.
Please, if you change your home address, let me know. Each issue of the newsletter results in an average of 4/5
being returned by the Post Office as undeliverable/no forwarding address.
NOW HEAR THIS! NOW HEAR THIS! The 2011 Haynsworth Reunion will be held at Savannah Georgia
from August 25 to 28, 2011 at the Hilton de Soto Hotel.
With this year’s reunion being early, this issue of the newsletter may be the only issue with the Registration
Form and other information concerning activities, contacts and other important details of interest for those
attending. Jim and Ann Murphy have been working hard to provide a memorable, enjoyable and fun time
for attendees. Activities will include meeting the haunts of the Ghosts of Savannah including a dinner at the
most famous haunted building in Savannah, the “Pirate’s House” where seamen were “shanghaied” by
merchant Captains to fill out their crews. Seamen would wake up and find themselves far out to sea and given
the choice of work or swim! We will also visit the “MIGHTY EIGHTH AIR FORCE” museum where will also
hold our annual memorial service in honor of our lost shipmates since our 2010 reunion. Hope to see many of you

Dear Haynsworth Friends,
I haven’t seen any of you since Sandusky,(OH), and that was a great reunion. I miss each and every one of you
and I hope since the reunion is in Georgia that I will be able to make that one, we will wait and see. I need knee
replacement surgery done and if I can get it done, I will try to get that done early next year. I have had a fun
year this year. We have always been campers and camped on the Texas for many years. Vern and I always talked
about going to see the whooping cranes every year and did go one year but didn’t know you had to take a boat-
ride to see them. One of my brothers and his wife and I went to see them in March. The skipper told us that one
set of birds had been coming down there for over thirty years and they had their chick with them. That was so
delightful to see them out in the wild. I went and stayed with one of Vern’s best friends wife for a couple of days.
Vern grew up with this man. My, how I enjoyed that. She came for Vern’s funeral and we used to visit one
another all the time but she moved to far off now. On the way to pick me up, my brother and his wife saw one of
the whooping cranes standing along side the road in a little body of salt water. They saw this one up much closer
and now my brother’s wife wants to go again. This same brother and his wife asked my sister and her husband
and I to go to Arkansas to Mountain View. He has a time share and we all stayed in this. What a great time we all
had together. Did we ever do a lot of reminiscing? This is a town where there are lots of people that play banjos,
guitars, fiddles, or whatever; go and make music. I understand there are a number of those towns in Arkansas.
There is a state park there that has a musical every night and the admission is only ten dollars. All of the music is
pre 1930’s and no amplifiers. We heard some good music by some very young people too. We hope we get to go
again next year too. I wish each and every one of you, Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.

calendar. I enjoy so much reading the newsletter and thank you for all your hard work. I was sorry to see the
passing od Chester Reichenbaugh, (EMC ’62-’68) (D: February 14, 2010) as he was my Chief during my tour of
duty on the Haynsworth. Unfortunately, I will not be able to attend the reunion in Harrisburg due to my job
situation. Sure wish it had been in Harrisburg this past year,(2009), as I spent four months working in
Harrisburg. I know you will all have a great time.

NAVY HISTORY AND TRADITIONS
BRASS MONKEY
In the old days of sailing ships boys were employed as “powder monkeys” to bring up cannon balls and bags of
gunpowder from the ships magazine during a battle. Next to the gun, closet its muzzle end, rested a device known
as a “brass monkey”, which consisted of three bowls made of brass and brazed or welded together. It’s purpose
was to hold three cannon balls available for instant use as a reload during a battle, or what we would now call
“ready ammunition”.(Note: There is an old saying, “cold enough to freeze the balls off a brass monkey.” This
sounds obscene, but rather has a mundane origin. Since brass contracts under cold temperatures, an extremely
cold night would cause the brass bowls to shrink enough to pop out any cannon balls they contained. Sailors who
found these cannon balls rolling about the deck now knew how cold things could get. Submitted by Bill Morton

Hi Jim, As you will probably recall, I served aboard the Wallace L. Lind, DD-703 in 44-45 and was picked up by
the Haynsworth after falling overboard while refueling in the South China Sea in January 1945. I stayed aboard
for two weeks until being transferred to the USS Prarie, (AD-15), in Ulithi. I did attend one of your reunions in
Florida when I lived there and spoke to your crew at that time. I have been receiving your newsletter for years and
look forward to continuing to do so. I would prefer to having the Newsletter mailed to me but if it helps you
financially, receiving it by e-mail is OK also. Thanks Jim and if you have any questions, please let me know. I will

exemplary yeoman’s job in getting out the newsletter. Thank You. All of my class buddies are now deceased. Being
in Disbursing Ships Stores and etc., I knew everyone aboard ship. As a team and the help of GOD, we made it
back. There were five Afro-Americans aboard when I was. They were good guys. Does anyone ever hear of their
whereabouts? It has been 10degrees here in Georgia- Lowest Ever!

Jim Horn, I thought I would send you this clipping that was in our paper last year. (ED. Note. Clipping has details
of the 1959 Med. Cruise and the circumstances surrounding the Suez canal transit. (It is lengthy so, anyone wishing
to read it let me know and I will send to you.) I was aboard Happy H. 4 years, most time as QM and Signalman.
Spent a lot of time on bridge with Captain Herb Anderson and another Captain. A lot of good memories, we spent
a lot of time at sea, as you know. Will try to be at next reunion in Savannah. I talk to James Murphy every once in
awhile. Do you remember a Radar man named Rich, can’t remember his first name, ( Foster, his name is Byers. He
lives in Inwood, WV (304) 229-5170), at one time I could name most of shipmates, all Radiomen, Radar men. Do
you remember O.C. Division? Had to use it one time for men who had Hepatitis. Enclosed is check. Will send more
next year. Send me a 2011 calendar. Do you know how I can get some white hats? Have some grand babies wanting
one. I see in newsletter some TAPS for some of our shipmates that I knew. You are doing some fine work with

Jim, Thanks for sending me the info on the next reunion. I’m looking forward to it. I was aboard the Haynsworth
from 64-65. When I was transferred I was an MM3/c. Because of the good training I received aboard the
Haynsworth I was an MM2/c before I was 20 years old. Thanks Again, Jim Ratcliff AKA “RAT GUARD”,

Dear Jim, Enclosed are my 2011 Dues. I had a very pleasant surprise prior to Christmas. I received a gift in the
mail, the HAYNSWORTH Calendar, from my old shipmate SK2/c Joe Golemi. Joe was my tutor when I became a
storekeeper. The last time I saw or spoke to Joe was in January 1970 when the Haynsworth was decommissioned in
Galveston, Texas. The Haynsworth Newsletter provided the link and I thank you. (Thank you Bob. It’s always
good to be a conduit in bringing shipmates together again.) Joe and I have since been in contact. The calendar is
great! Again, many thanks to Joe and the Haynsworth Newsletter. Bob Csencitz, SKSn ’69-’70.

Sir, As I scanned the “TAPS” section of the Haynsworth we site, I noticed an error regarding the death of my
Father-in-law, John “Jack” A. McAllister, RM3/c ’44-’46. He passed away on Veteran’s Day, 11/11/1992.
Jack (or Hark” as he was known to many close friends) succumbed to lung cancer just before the 1992 Haynsworth
Reunion. My wife, Ann McAllister Irons, had plans to bring him to the reunion. Jack even had received a new
Navy Peacoat in preparations for his travels. Despite a brave battle against cancer, he faded rapidly during the
second week of November that year. He was one of the toughest men I have ever met despite his stature and slight
frame. A professional fireman for 29 years, Jack was afraid of nothing. The deaths of his close friends in the Radio
Shack from the kamikaze haunted him until his death. Though there was nothing he could have done at the time of
the attack, as he was in Pearl Harbor for advanced radio training, Jack suggested that the Navy install a passage in
the floor of the radio shack to the level below on future Sumner class destroyers. It is believed from his testimony
around the dinner table that the Navy adopted his suggestion. Do you know where and when the 2011 Haynsworth
Reunion will be held? (ED. Note: Howard responded and informed Marty Irons of the Savannah Reunion)

Jim, Here are my dues and $10.00 for 2011 Clock raffle. I need a replacement for my ships clock. They can’t get
parts for it anymore. There’s a little bitty picture of the Haynsworth entering Toranto Italy. (issue 61, 12/10/2010).
I have pictures of all my ships on the wall of my den and that is the--------- of the Haynsworth. I have always
wondered what port it was. I got the picture from----ships. I would like to see y’all in August but I have two
problems. My health and my wife. She said I couldn’t drive her to Savannah in the summer. Ex. CS1/c retired.

ED. Note this letter was received in Dec. 2008. It was never published but it is still relevant. It was written by the
daughters of Michael F. Mennette, ’44-’48 EM1/c after attending our 2008 reunion in Jacksonville FL.
Dear Jim Horn, It has taken us awhile to write this thank you, but we wanted to let you know that we felt
welcome. We wanted to go with mom to keep her company, and enjoyed it so much that we were glad we made
the trip. We were impressed with the lifetime bond created by the men on the Haynsworth. It was exciting to
hear the stories and to feel the support you had for each other. It’s comforting to know that dad will always be
remembered. Dad never talked much about the war. It was hard for him, he certainly couldn’t tell his children!
It would have been great if he had. He shared those experiences with the men at the reunions. There, he was able
to give back to others a part of the war, and to us a part of him. We thank him and you for opening that door. It’s
hard for kids to see their parents as people; to us he was just Dad. But, he was so much more than the father we
knew. This showed us the sailor in him. For a young man, he had so much on his shoulders. Dads strength was in
doing what had to be done, he taught us that very early in life. He was very proud of his service years and the
men that served with him. Being on the ship, (USS McInerney FFG-8), throwing the roses into the water, the
ceremony, everything was done and said with such respect and honor. It was very emotional. The ship tour was
an interesting way of learning about our Dad’s life back then; He was there in spirit and would have loved to
show us around himself, full of pride. We saw him in a whole new way, and for a short time we were able to get a
sense of what he went through. Everything was like in miniature……the eating area, work spaces, the recreation,
the shopping, and mail room. Oh!, and the sleeping quarters!!!!, six bunks squeezed into that little space. Can’t
even imagine! Dad was even on the ship when we were born, he was so excited and surprised, he had only
expected one of us! Mom said the war had changed him, maybe, but we only knew the man he became. He was a
strong loving family man. He lived to see his five children grown, became a grandfather and great grandfather.
He had a good life and we all miss him dearly. We want to thank you for the time we spent with the families that
were so important to our parents. Our brother, Michael, and sisters Madeline and Patti, were unable to be there
but felt they were because of all we were able to share with them. Thank You. Mom’s memories are good ones,
she felt so blessed to have been there and see the respect, and love Dad held by all who knew him. These reunions
meant so much to both of them. We were proud and honored to be a part of such a celebration. Yours Truly,

MAIL BAG Jim,
I would like to order one of the Foul Weather Jackets. I am enclosing a check to cover the cost
of the jacket, 2011 dues and a DD-700 2011 calendar. I served on the USS Wallace E. Lind
DD-703 from 1948 to 1951. When the Lind returned from Korea to go into a yard overhaul in
August 1951, I transferred to the DD-700 and Served there until discharged in September ‘52.
I was sorry to hear about former shipmate Dick Snyder (50-52 MM2/c) and Frank Vetrecin
(50-53 MM3/c) passing away. It seems they were too young for that event. I was pleased to read
Larry Chandler’s letter (50-54 BT3/c) and hear that Dick Frenske ( 50-54 MR3) is still around.

I would be pleased to hear from any shipmate on the cruise to the Med./Suez/Djbouti/Aden in late 1962. The

(Chaplain) were on-board.

Dear Mr. Horn,
I served on the Haynsworth from 1961 to 1963 and enjoyed every bit of it. I learned a lot and got to see many
places, people and friends. I wish my wife and I could have attended the (last) reunion but unfortunately there
was to much going on here and we couldn’t make it. Enclosed is a check for dues and a “Haynsworth” Cap. If
I’m wrong on the cost, please advise.

Received the recent issue of the newsletter and am responding to your request for preference of the format.
Being involved with newsletter many times, I can understand fully the need to go electronically. I’m all for it.
One thought to consider in the process. You will find several, if not many members, who do not have computers
or e-mail capability, so if the decision were made to go fully electronic, then they would not receive the
publication. For some, that would be a shame because by the comments of your letters, etc. many, including
myself, look forward to news about our shipmates. In fact, I was saddened to read of QMC Adams’ passing in
the latest issue. Chief Adams’ in my estimation had the best rapport with his men under him, than any other
Chief I knew. And he was a working Chief on the bridge when things got hectic. His men loved him. So the

NEWSLETTER, TREASURER COMMENTS
Work is progressing on making the newsletter available to those who elect to receive it in that format. My
intent is to continue sending in hard copy mail and also to those I have e-mail addresses for. I will do this for
at least two more issues and then let those of you decide how you would like to continue to receive the
newsletter. Each method has it’s pluses’ and minuses’ so I want all e-mail users to get a feel for it before
separating the two methods.
As regards the submission of annual dues, we are well below the numbers that we normally achieve at this
time of the year. As stated previously, dues are what keeps the 3X per year newsletter coming. I understand
that we are going through a difficult period financially and that is one of the drivers to send issues by e-mail.
I had also mentioned previously that, by far, the MAIL BAG portion is the most popular feature by all the
positive comments that I receive. So, the only way to keep the most popular section going is for you shipmates
to continue sending in your letters and remembrances coming. As you can see from this issue, many of the
submissions are back dated letters that I could not fit into recent issues, but the backlog has now dried up. So,
Please give me fresh new material to share with all shipmates and families. Yes, I do get feedback from family
members on how much they and family enjoy reading letters from other shipmates and/or family members.
This issue has been particularly challenging to me in that I am still a novice in the use of computers and
especially Microsoft Word format in which this is written. I think that every day I learn at least one thing new
in how this thing works. Just today, I lost a whole page and have no idea how I lost it. Anyway, some days it is
richly rewarding and other days it frustrates me to no end! Don’t forget, even if you are not attending the
reunion you can still enter ALL the raffles,(except the 50/50), We have a GREAT CLOCK this year to raffle!

1. For those flying in to Savannah/Hilton Head International Airport:
There will not be a free shuttle service from the airport to the De Soto Hilton Hotel.
There is taxi service available at the Airport. I researched the going rates for this service and what I have
found is: $28.00 flat rate from Airport to Hotel. There is an additional fee of $5.00 for each additional
passenger and a possible fuel surcharge of $2 or $3 depending on the current cost of fuel. There is a
possibility that arrangements can be made for Jim Murphy or myself to come to the airport and bring you
to the hotel. For this I will need to know your flight information i.e. your Airline, your flight number your
scheduled arrival time, your gate number to meet you or in baggage claim area. You can send this information

THURSDAY/EARLY BIRD TOUR August 25
Leave Hotel at 5:30PM, travel to “Pirates House Resturant” for a buffet Dinner, (6 to 7:30PM). Trolley will
pick-up at Pirates House for the “Ghosts of Savannah” tour that begins approx. 7:45 PM. Tour ends approx.
9PM and transports us back to Hotel at approx. 9:15PM. Remainder of evening in hospitality room or, getting
rest for Fridays tour of the Historic, Victorian and colonial districts. For those electing not to go on this tour, the

FRIDAY; August 26
Trolley will pick us up at Hotel at 9:00AM and return to Hotel at approx. 10:30AM. For those selecting the
Mrs. Wilkes Lunch/Dinner option, the Lunch is scheduled for 2:30 PM
Our Organization Business Meeting will be in the Monterey Room from 11:30 AM to??. Evening dinner is on
own. We may have a “Pizza Party” in hospitality room for those that do not want to go out again.
SATURDAY: August 27
We travel to the “Mighty Eighth Air force Museum” in Pooler SC. Bus departs Hotel at 8:30AM and arrives
at 9:00AM. We will also conduct our annual Memorial Service for those shipmates who have passed on since last
year’s reunion in Harrisburg, PA, and also our shipmates who were KIA on April 6, 1945.
When we arrive back at the Hotel we will have time to prepare for our Banquet. Cash Bar from 6 to 7PM.
Opening posting of the Colors at 7:00 and followed by Dinner. After Dinner we will award the winners of the
Silent Auction Items and draw the winning entries for the raffles. (Please support these drawings.)

BREAKING NEWS
This is up to date, (April 22, 2011), information that will not be in the “hard copy” newsletter
that I attempted to mail out today.
This afternoon I took the 531 news letters to the Post Office to mail. Much to my surprise, I was
told that the postage rate for first class mail over 1 ounce was increased by 3 cents for a total of
0.64 per newsletter. This increase went into effect about two/three weeks ago and was not
publicized in the media. So, I had to purchase 600 3 cent stamps and return home to apply the
new stamps. Since only shipmates with e-mail addresses will receive this electronic newsletter, I
wanted to point out the fact that it is increasingly costly for hard copy newsletters. I fully
understand that some shipmates having e-mail capability still wish to receive the hard copy.
Some may not have printer capability to print out portions of the newsletter such as the
registration or raffle forms. For those that due have full capability, I urge you to seriously
consider opting in to the electronic format. There are more costs to producing the hard copy that
the most obvious ones of printing and postage. The additional costs include the seals used on the
newsletter and the cost of printer ink for the single page insert that I include in each newsletter
and the paper.
As I mentioned in the main body of the newsletter, I will send both hard copy and electronic
newsletters to everyone for two cycles to give everyone a good opportunity to decide which
permanent mode you would like. This starts with this April 2011 issue. You will receive the next
issue, Aug. 2011 in both formats also unless you decide before then and notify me of your choice
either way. I will compose a e-mail list for those choosing that format and a mail list for those
who wish to continue receiving the hard copy.
I also am asking e-mail users to provide feedback to me on any positive and/or negative
comments to be used in improving this electronic product.
