Prior to packing, the different grades ofmeal are stored in bins. As required, the final product is sent to the packinghall, where it is packed by a range ofelectronically controlled machines, according to the grade and the size(weight) of the final saleable product.

The TrucksAllem Brothers uses a fleet of forklifttrucks, including 5 LPG-powered UT25P2.5t UTILEV trucks, to transport thefinal packaged product to thewarehouse and to load it onto trucksfor shipment to a network ofwholesalers. A further Diesel poweredUT25P is used in the feed mill.

The UTILEV trucks have been onsite andin operation for about 2 months, andare currently operating for 200 hours amonth over 2-shifts. The trucks are notin constant use during the operation, but during periods of high demand, theyare required to respond quickly to boththe needs of the packing hall – to movepackaged maize into the warehouse –and to the needs of the shipping hall, asroad trailers arrive frequently to takethe goods away for sale.

Flip van der Westhuizen, the MillManager, stated that the drivers arereally happy with the trucks – they arereally responsive and easy to operateand from his perspective, they havehelped to increase the efficiency of theoperation.

The trucks were purchased fromBarloworld Handling, and Barloworld arecarrying out the regular maintenance onthe trucks – at present, there is noservice contract in place, but this is

being discussedwith the dealer,as this will helpAllem Brothersto keep on top ofthe running costsof the trucks. To date, they areextremelysatisfied with theservice supportand responseprovided byBarloworld.

The company made the decision topurchase the UTILEV trucks based onthree main reasons – 1) because thecompany had an existing workingrelationship with Barloworld Handling, 2)because the trucks are simple to useand maintain, and 3) because the trucksrepresented good value for money.
