Insect Syllable Game Setting: Small Group
Objective: Identify the correct number of syllables in words
Materials Needed:
• 3 paper lunch bags or cereal boxes• Insect Syllable Cards• Flower Picture Cards• Optional: recording sheet
Directions:
Print one set of the insect syllable cards found on pages 5-6, laminate, and cut out. Print the flower picture cards on page 7. Attach each flower picture to the front of a lunch bag, cereal box, or other container. Show the syllable cards to your group and ask them to identify the pictures on each card. Next place the syllable cards in a bag, basket, or container and have students take turns selecting a card. The students will identify the picture on the card, identify the number of syllables in the word, and place the card inside the correct box or bag to indicate the number of syllables. There is an optional recording sheet for this activity located on page 8 if you wish to use it. Students can color or mark the correct number of syllables using a Do-A-Dot marker.

Insect Beginning Sounds Game
Setting: Small Group
Objective: Isolate and identify initial sounds (m, d, g, a, l, b, f)
Materials Needed:
• 7 Clothespins per child in your small group (the spring loaded type) • Fine tip permanent marker • Insect beginning sound picture wheel (p. 10) • Optional: recording sheet (p. 11)
Directions:
Use the fine tip permanent marker to write one letter on each clothespin, the letters should correspond with the beginning sounds of the pictures on the wheel. There are 7 pictures on the beginning sound wheel so each student will get 7 clothespins, each one with a different letter written on it. Print one insect beginning sound wheel for each child in your small group and laminate for durability. Students will identify the picture, identify the beginning sound, and attach the clothespin with the corresponding letter on the wheel. There is an optional recording sheet included on page 11 for advanced students. Students can write the beginning letter in the box next to each picture.
Tip: Color the back of each set of clothespins with a different colored permanent marker. For example, student A would have a set of 7 green clothespins; student B would have a set of 7 red clothespins, etc. This will keep the clothespins from becoming mixed up.

Ladybug Rhyming Game
Setting: Small Group
Objective: Identify rhyming words
Materials Needed:
• One ladybug rhyming mat per child in your small group- up to 5 players(pg. 13-17)
• Ladybug rhyming pictures (pgs. 18)
Directions:
Print one ladybug rhyming mat per child in your small group. Print the mats on cardstock and laminate for durability. Next, print the rhyming pictures on pages 18, laminate for durability and cut out. Place the rhyming pictures in a box, container, or basket in the middle of the table. Students will take turns selecting a card and identifying the picture, then deciding if it rhymes with the picture on their mat or not. If a student selects a picture that rhymes with the one on his mat he places it on one of the ladybug’s spots; pictures that do not rhyme can be placed back in the basket.

Here is an Insect Pocket Chart Setting: Small Group
Objectives:
Concepts of Print
• Follow words from left to right and top to bottom.• Recognize that spoken words are represented in written language.• Understand that words are separated by spaces in print.
Materials Needed:
Cardstock, Pocket Chart, Pointers
Directions:
Print the pocket chart sentences on pages 30-35 on cardstock and laminate for durability. Cut the words out and place them in a pocket chart. Review the sentences with your class daily during large group as you point to each word with a pointer. Students can read the pocket chart independently during centers using pointers. More advanced students can build the sentences in the pocket chart using the rebus pictures for support. You can store this activity in an envelope or zipper pouch.
Note: This activity also provides an opportunity to teach students the difference between the word “a” and the word “an.”

Bee Alphabet Game Setting: Small Group
Objective: Aligns with following Common Core standard:
ELA-Literacy.RF.K.1d Recognize and name all upper- and lowercase letters of the alphabet.
Materials Needed:
• One set of bee playing cards• Basket or container to hold the cards• One recording sheet per child• One Do-A-Dot marker (bingo dot) per child
Directions:
Print, laminate, and cut one set of bee alphabet cards. I have included 4 different sets for you to choose from; uppercase color, lowercase color, uppercase black and white, and lowercase black and white. Place all the cards in a basket or plastic tub. Seat your students in a circle and pass the basket around. Each student closes his eyes and removes one card, then “reads” the letter on the card aloud. If the student can read the letter he keeps the card. If not, then he may ask a friend to help read him the letter. After a student identifies the letter he locates it on the recording sheet (see pages 62-63) and uses a Do-A-Dot marker to stamp it.
When a student gets the card that says “Buzz!” all of the students buzz like bees. After the buzz card is chosen, the person who selected it must put all of his or her cards back in the basket.
