    TV Advert Final Evaluation

    What was the brief?

We were told to look at Unilever and the products that they

produce and distribute. We needed to take an existin product

in their rane and rebrand it so it appealed to a di!erent

taret audience. "ne advert we looked at before we started

our task was that of "ld #pice who had rebranded their product

to reach a youner taret audience.

What was your chosen product and how did

you decide as a roup to choose it?

$ decided to choose Vaseline as %y product to rebrand& 'rstly and %ost

i%portantly because it was part of Unilever. $ have always used Vaseline %ainly

throuhout the winter to save fro% the pain of chapped lips& so it was in the back

of %y %ind when this task ca%e about. Vaseline is

stereotypically a fe%ale product and $ felt it would be

ood to rebrand it to %eet a new taret audience (

that bein %ales. We were arraned into roups

accordin to what we had chosen to rebrand& $ was

put in a roup with )ois and Alana who had also

wanted to rebrand Vaseline which %ade it a wholelot easier when plannin as we all had si%ilar ideas.

Who is your current taret audience for the

product and who did you decide to appeal to?

The current taret audience of Vaseline is %iddle aed wo%an and there isn*t

really a social rade that Vaseline 'ts into due to its

a!ordability yet ood +uality. After lookin at

the "ld #pice advert and takin inspiration

fro% it $ decided that products can be re,

branded in a way that can then appeal to a

new taret audience. $ knew as said

    previously that Vaseline was a

    predo%inantly wo%an*s product and

    hadn*t reached out to %ales before& this

    was %y plan.

    -ow did you collect the

    feedback co%%ents fro% others/ on your 'nished advert fro%

    your taret audience?

$ decided the best way to collect results would be fro% an online surveyin

website& $ used #urvey 0onkey. This was the best way to achieve a lare reach

    and the %ost econo%ical in ter%s of ti%e. $ could also %onitor who was

respondin to the survey and create visual aids that help with the analysis side.

1ot only was the analysis side better than any other way

of collectin results but $ could delete and silly responses

or responses that $ didn2t need.

3o you think you %anaed to et the %ain %essae to your

taret audience you speci'ed in pre, production? Would the

advert have an appropriate i%pact on the%?

The idea of the advert was to base the whole narrative on a stereotypical

situation with a stereotypical 4lad*. We wanted to %ake the characters in theadvert stereotypical so you could connect with the% easily without havin to

think deeply about it. $ feel that the way we delivered the advert %eant that we

    were able to %ake a

    considerable i%pact on the%

in a way that they %ay be interested in the

product. "f course when it co%es to re, brandin

it*s not oin to win over everyone but fro% the

survey responses it see%s there advert did a ood

5ob. As %ost %ales said they would purchase

the product. $ feel the pub at%osphere was the biest win for usthouh as everyone has been to a pub and it*s a friendly

environ%ent where all walks of life can

    connect& Vaseline is a %ainstrea% product

    and needed that si%ilar

    at%osphere.

    3o you think your

'nished advert e!ectively sells the product to the speci'ed

    audience throuh its storyline6narrative

"ur ob5ective was si%ple7 create an advert that appeals to the %ass %ale

audience. We had to 'nd a way of doin

that and tryin to create a 4%anly*

    environ%ent with a typically fe%inine product.

Usin the pub and the irls provided the

perfect sti%ulus to base our advert fro% and $

feel the narrative was perfect. The feedback proved that the

narrative was relatable to and people would

purchase the Vaseline. $n %y eyes& that%eans the advert worked.

Use of %ise,en,scene& ca%era& editin and sound.

8re,production was very i%portant for us as this was the ti%e when we would

'ure out what kind of feel we wanted to create in 'l%in and post production.

We wanted to keep the feel fairly rustic and natural& two of Vaseline*s traits that

we wanted to re9ect withinthe advert. When co%pletin our recces

we felt the pub was perfect& the natural

lihtin was ood and the layout of the

pub worked nicely as well. $ was

behind the ca%era and directed also&

$ wanted to keep everythin natural lookin so

we used no arti'cial lihtin and %ade

sure that $ captured the entire of the

rustic pub features. $ used the

storyboard throuhout the shoot and referredto it when lookin at what shots $ was about to use which %eant everythin

ran s%oothly on set. $t was i%portant we were not too bland when it co%es to

ca%era shots but we also didn*t want to over co%plicate thins as we only had

:; seconds to et sell our product and co%plicatin ca%era shots wouldn*t have

helped us. #ound was the trickiest thin for us and we had to re,dub a few pieces

of dialoue. The pub had a lot of a%bient sound and this was tricky to shoot on

the built in ca%era we were usin on the ca%corder. $f we could shoot aain $

would have used an external %icrophone for opti%u% sound +uality. "ne piece

of speech near the end was al%ost un,hearable so we re,dubbed this. $n ter%s of

editin we carried out all of this on Adobe 8re%iere 8ro and followed theuidelines when it ca%e to oranisin 'les. $ had so%e basic knowlede when it

co%es to editin and Alana and )ois were also reat help& there was nothin

%a5or to be done. The only thins we done was add %usic& cut clips where

necessary and add so%e colour correction to clips& this was probably the %ost

    si%ple part for us.

overco%in fears to beco%e a better product. We tried to convey a fairly

    co%plex %essae with a si%ple advert& we think it worked.

"verall do you feel your advert is 't for purpose? 3oes it look

professional and co%ply with advertisin reulations=

First of all $ think our advert does look professional& we shot the footae and

edited it in a way that would %ake it look professional. We concentrated a lot on

continuity so there would be no %istakes when it ca%e to that as that would take

a lot away when it co%es to professionalis%. 1ot only did we concentrate on the

basics but we were able to use industry standard e+uip%ent which

helped us %ake the advert look as ood as it could. We recorded the

footae in full -3 and were able to edit in state of the art

editin software which %ade the whole process a lot easier

    and %ore i%portantly a lot %ore professional. $n reards to

advertisin reulations we also followed these. 3ue to usadvertisin Vaseline there were %any di!erent cateories we

ca%e under and had to co%ply to in order to stay in co%pliance with A#A and

"verall the advert went very well and is pretty %uch exactly how $ thouht it

would look when plannin. $ think that our viorous pre, production work allowed

us to carry out the shootin process exactly how we wanted to& it was %uch

easier to oranise when in the pub shootin and $ knew exactly where the actors

needed to be and also what shots $ was about to carry out and what %ise(en,

scene $ wanted. $n our roup Alana decided to take control of drawin the

storyboard and %e and )ois fed her ideas that she then illustrated& this was the

best possible thin to do as she had the best ability when it ca%e to drawin

which %ade the visual ele%ent of pre, production easier to understand. "f course

the %ain ob5ective we wanted to achieve was to successfully re,brand Vaseline

to a %ake de%oraphic which $ feel we done successfully lookin at both

audience and tutor feedback. "ur surveys show that the %a5ority of our new

taret audience would purchase Vaseline after watchin the advert and the

narrative was en5oyed by the %a5ority of our peers. Throuhout the whole

process we worked closely alonside out tutors to opti%ise what we had at our

disposal& osh had incredible knowlede when it co%es to 8re%iere 8ro and Elliehelped us when plannin our narrative to et the best possible e!ect. "verall $

a% very happy with how everythin ca%e toether fro% pre, production to the

    'nished product.

e9ect on how satis'ed you were with your 'nal advert. Would $

do anythin di!erently if $ was able to undertake the task

aain? Evaluate your own involve%ent in the pro5ect.

"verall $ was very happy with how %y advert turned out as it re9ected %y

oriinal ideas which were drafted upin pre, production work. There are a

few thins $ would do di!erently

thouh as $*% sure when %ost

creators 'nish work there are thins

they are not happy with. The 'rst

thin is the sound +uality& if $ was to

co%plete this task aain $ would

    have de'nitely used an external

sound recorder as the one built into

the ca%corder was very poor andcreated so%e nasty sound that wasn*t

ideal. Another thin $ would have

chaned is the lihtin& $ was happy with the %a5ority of it but so%e arti'cial

lihtin %ay have helped& $ decided to keep it incredibly natural to create the

pub at%osphere but due to relyin on

    sunliht& it was inconsistent at ti%es. A

ood exa%ple of this was at the start

the footae was very briht and when

playin pool the liht dropped. Except for the% two %inor

thins $ was very happy with how everythin went andwouldn*t have chaned anythin else.

Finally let*s talk about %y involve%ent in the pro5ect. The duties were very %uch

e+ually split in pre, production with all of us carryin out di!erent tasks and we all

had e+ual workloads& %y %ain task in pre, production was relayin ideas to Alana

to then illustrate into a visual for% on the storyboard. When it ca%e to shootin

our footae $ decided to direct and also take chare of the ca%era& it was %y

responsibility to oranise all of the actors and also take control of the technical

side ( recordin the footae. $ thorouhly en5oyed this as it allowed %e to take

%y idea and translate that into shootin it& there was also pressure to deliver and

    a ti%e li%it to %eet. $ was very happy with %y involve%ent and also happy with

    how %y roup worked.
