One event explores the many facets of volunteering

Kiwanis International One Day Supports Care Corner Youth Centre

11 April 2015 was Kiwanis International One Day; a day on which Kiwanis

volunteers from all over the world volunteer together. For this special day,

Kiwanis Singapore has partnered with Care Corner Teck Ghee Youth Centre

for a fun-filled family bonding event for their beneficiaries.

A Great Start in Expressing YOUrself

The day’s activities started off with ‘The Art of Expressing

YOUrself’, a cartooning workshop led by Mr Chang Siang. In this

workshop, participants were taught how to communicate non-

verbally and express themselves artistically. It was evident that

these activities built up their confidence. Both volunteers and

families started to draw with simple shapes before moving on to

try their hand at drawing the more challenging sea creatures. It

was especially heartening to see both the student volunteers and

children having fun as they drew together. Kiwanis later shared, to

the pleasant surprise of the families and children, that a calendar would be made to feature the

drawings.

“Prawning” Session

After all the colours and vibrancy at the drawing session, everyone was treated to the main highlight of

the day; one which volunteers, children, and adults alike were all looking forward to. And they

absolutely adored it. In fact, many were reluctant to leave when the time came to pack up for home. It

was definitely a satisfying closure to such an enjoyable event.

The exhilaration of a catch. Barbecuing the huge prawns after catching them

We would like to note that all this fun and laughter would not have been possible if not for the help of

both the student and adult volunteers from Kiwanis Singapore. Care Corner would like to extend our

thanks to everyone who has contributed to the success of this event. Keep reading to find out about the

many ways in which you can help as a volunteer.

Want to help but don’t know how?

There are many levels of volunteering involved in the planning and execution of an event. We saw the

adult Kiwanis members organising the administrative aspects for this year’s Kiwanis One Day, while the

student volunteers were in charge of the practical aspects like befriending and interacting with the

families. Mr Chang Siang, who volunteered his specific skillset, also played a huge part in the success of

the event. Regardless of your age and role, adults and youths alike are able to contribute their time and

skills when volunteering!

Working Adult Volunteers

Often time, it may seem easy for adult volunteers to volunteer, given the many options available with

the many voluntary welfare organizations in Singapore. However, we have come to learn that there

remain some challenges in volunteering for adult volunteers. Speaking of the challenges they face, the

adult volunteers from Kiwanis confess that it is difficult to find time to volunteer.

Some of the adult volunteers from Kiwanis

“It’s definitely worth it, though,” says Ms Vivienne Tan, the current President of the Singapore chapter.

Some members combat this problem of “time famine” by choosing to volunteer together with their

family. One such member is Ms Fong Sook Yee, who volunteers with her husband, Mr Damien Lee. They

are both serving in Kiwanis Singapore as their Treasurer and Secretary respectively. But volunteering is

not just for the adults, and they even bring their children to participate in the activities they organise as

well. Volunteering thus becomes yet another opportunity for family bonding!

Skills-based & Pro Bono Volunteering

Mr Chang Siang frequently volunteers as a cartoonist with organisations such as Kiwanis Singapore and

Singapore Children’s Society. He loves working with children as he feels that children tends to be more

interested in the process of drawing the cartoons rather than the quality of the final product. He also

believes strongly that drawing will give children the space to explore and discover themselves through

art, just as it was for him.

“It’s a good experience for

them. I want them to

understand that not

everyone is the same - and

that’s perfectly fine.”

Ms Fong Seok Yee, Treasurer of

Kiwanis Singapore

6

By volunteering his specific skillset, Mr Chang Siang is able to connect with and engage the children

more effectively, while still being able to do what he is passionate about: cartooning. Truly, it is a win-

win situation for all!

Student Volunteers

Although the student volunteers hail from different primary and secondary schools, they are all a part of

the Kiwani’s Key Club and K-Kids programme. Both programmes are

student-centric and aim to promote a spirit of volunteering and service

citizenship values in the younger generation.

Although students are provided with many varied volunteering

opportunities through Kiwanis Singapore, it is still mostly a student-

initiated programme as adults - both teachers and volunteer advisors alike

- take a backseat by only providing

administrative support. As fellow student

volunteers ourselves, it is indeed inspiring to see such a positive culture

of volunteerism being cultivated in these schools.

Volunteer now!

Volunteering takes many forms, and there are so many ways that you

can help out. Whether you are a working adult, or young student, there

is something meaningful that only YOU can contribute! To find out

more, please visit: http://www.carecorner.org.sg/volunteer.html.

Be our Ambassador

An immediate volunteer opportunity presents itself. Be our Volunteer

Ambassadors and join us on 27 June 2015 to help fundraise for Care Corner Teck Ghee Youth Centre.

The centre operates programmes that support our Youth in the community through meaningful,

interactive and holistic activities. With the aid of volunteer Mentors, assisted by trained staff, we

empower youth in making positive life choices, learn to attain personal goals, thereby maximising their

potential. We hope to raise $160,000 to cover the projected shortfall in our outreach efforts for the

Financial Year 2015/2016.

Besides joining as an ambassador, you are also welcome to (i) share about this volunteer role with your

family and friends, (ii) encourage our volunteers and staff when you see them on the streets and/or (iii)

make a tax-deductible donation to the registered charity at www.sggives.org/cctgyc.

“Initiative comes from

them.”

This article has been made possible and brought to you by our friendly Editorial Volunteers and

translated our helpful Translation Volunteer, Tan Kheng Meng.

“Hello, I’m Lim Jia Yi, a Year 6 student from River Valley Student Editorial Club.

Some of the notable events that I’ve written articles for are the River Valley Model United Nations and Jurong Lake Run in 2014. Apart from providing event coverage, I have also done interviews for both the editorial club’s publication and the school montage. Prior to joining the editorial club, I was in the River Valley Film Society and Softball Team so I do have some knowledge in both areas. In addition, I do

dabble in a bit of creative writing, mostly in the form of short stories.”

“Hi! My name is Helen, and I’m from River Valley (RV) High School. I’ve been

writing for the Student Editorial Club for three years. I have written for The Chalkboard, an Editorial Club publication that was distributed to the school. I also contribute articles to RV MUN (read by RV MUN participants) and RV Times (read

by the school and its alumni).”

“ I have always been encouraged reading Care Corner’s Volunteer Cares

Newsletter; it contains many wonderful and meaningful stories of how

volunteers make a difference. These stories, written by editorial volunteers

themselves, have always encouraged me and it is also with this that I have

taken my first steps to being a volunteer.

I have recently retired from an editorial role. Due to health reasons, I am

unable to render services in the direct service, such as befriending the seniors or volunteering with

youths in making a difference for the community.

However, just as some volunteers had aptly remarked, serving the community can indeed take

many forms and this encouraged me to take to step to be a translation volunteer with Care Corner.

I hope to be able to use my editorial experience and skills to help extend the reach of the exciting

stories of the work of Care Corner’s volunteers. By translating them into Chinese, I hope more will

come to know the work and mission of Care Corner; I hope to extend the reach of these powerful

8

stories to small and medium enterprises, Chinese businesses, clans, shops and communities. It is

hoped that my little effort will be a spark in helping others consider making a difference too, by

serving as a volunteer; serving the needy alongside the charities.

I hope that these articles will help our readers be better acquainted with the volunteers’ labour of

love for the community.

Kiwanis Singapore

Chang Siang

Kiwanis

Kiwanis Singapore

Fong

Chang Siang
