Shannon Clutterbuck, Oscar Rainsford and Dulcie
Shirrefs visited the Science and Technology Innovation
Centre in Bacchus Marsh on Tuesday 22 April. They had
the experience of using equipment, techniques and
instruments that are part of their course to analyse Paul’s
Full Cream Milk. The students used the AAS to
determine the amount of calcium in milk, the UV- VIS to
determine its protein content and an IR to obtain it’s
spectra to determine the presence of fat, sugar and
protein. Werribee and Winchelsea students were also
present and conducted the same experiments on Skinny,
A2, Soya and goat milk samples to compare the results
with the milk Edenhope students tested.
As an assessment task the students will write a report to compare the techniques used to analyse the milk
with those that were used at school to analyse fertilizer. The students and I wish to thank Mrs.
Clutterbuck for driving us.

We held a successful ‘Wear Orange’ for Harmony Day raising $112. This will be donated to the charity,
Australia for UNHCR Syrian Refugee appeal.
We have chosen to celebrate ANZAC Day this year by assisting in the selling of
commemorative items for the Edenhope RSL. The range includes badges, arms
bands and pens from $2.00 up to $10.00. They will be for sale on Sports Day and
during the rest of the week. SRC representatives will be conducting the College
ANZAC service on Friday 22 April.
We will also be selling pieces of slice for 50 cents at Tuesday’s Sports Day as
part of our next event, ‘The Biggest Morning Tea’ cancer research fundraiser.
This will be hosted by the SRC at the College in May.
VCE CHEMISTRY EXCURSION
Our College theme/motto this year is ‘Imagine. Believe.
Achieve’. As a whole school we are encouraging each other to
Imagine positive, successful futures and to cultivate a strong
Belief system in ourselves and each other that we can Achieve
what we set our hearts and minds on. We need to bring the
dreams and wishes we have for ourselves to a more conscious
level so that we can support each other and be purposeful about
the actions we take to reach our intended goals. We should also be
realistic about the effort that is required to be successful. If we
want it, we have to work for it. This is an important term for
students to refocus and be prepared to be challenged to work
harder. Students who achieve and exceed their learning goals
know that they will be confronted with problems and difficulties.
They expect and accept that they will need to acquire new skills,
knowledge or understandings to go to the next level of learning
and achievement. Their brains will hurt! They don’t give up. They
seek help. They fail, try, fail and eventually succeed. They know
that this is normal. And they will feel great knowing that it is
through their effort and persistence that they achieved success.
Parents and families can help by encouraging their child and
checking in with them about their work requirements and
learning. Xuno can be a good way to contact your child’s teacher
about their learning or alternatively you can contact the College
directly to set up an appointment if you would like a meeting.
Parent-Teacher-Student interviews are on Monday 18th April.
Students are not expected at school for classes. However, they
are expected to attend with their parent/guardian to meet
their teachers to discuss their progress to date and to talk
about how to improve. There are 2 interview sessions: Session 1
is from 2.30pm - 5.00pm; Session 2 is from 5.30pm – 7.30pm.
Interviews for Primary children are made via the booking form
sent home earlier this week. Interviews for Secondary students
require an indication of which session they will be attending
rather than an exact time-slot. This is generally a satisfactory
arrangement. If parents would like to have a more extensive
discussion with their child’s teacher, we recommend arranging a
further meeting for some time in the near future.
I invite you to attend the Athletics sports on Tuesday 19th April.
This is a great opportunity to encourage our students to participate
and enjoy competing. A compulsory Regional Principal’s meeting
is on the same day so I am unable to be present. I wish all the
competitors the best and I am sure you will have a wonderful day.
I look forward to hearing about the personal and house
achievements when I return.
The Annual Report 2015 will be presented to the School Council
and to the community at the next School Council meeting on
Monday 9th May at 7.00pm in the Centre. I invite you to attend
this meeting to hear about the work undertaken in 2015 and the
plans for 2016.
Have a great term everyone.

This week we received a letter notifying us
that Stephen Lloyd (Year 12 – 2015) was
successful in obtaining the highest level of
achievement in the Duke of Edinburgh

Level and has the opportunity to be
presented with his award at a State Award

the Duke of Edinburgh program at
Edenhope College.
THE DUKE OF EDINBURGH AWARD
GOLD LEVEL
Edenhope College celebrated Harmony Day on March 21st with a
special focus this year on the positives we experience in our
classrooms, friendships, our communities and as a nation when we
are open to accepting our own and others differences. Feeling
positive that we all bring something special.
Senior students
had an
opportunity to
discuss issues of
inclusiveness,
the refugee
plight and other
topics during the
week prior to
Harmony Day in
their regular
classes.
The Primary
students looked
at the diversity of faces from around the world in art and created
some amazing clay faces which will be displayed soon for all to
enjoy. Every student had a chance to grind spices to take home to
create Butter Chicken, which they sampled and thoroughly
enjoyed in the Food Centre as well as making Asian cold rolls.
Comedian and television personality, Ahn Do has released a
children’s book titled, ‘The Little Refugee’, which depicts his own
true story as a child fleeing war torn Vietnam and this was also a
focus on the day. Students really enjoyed this story of resilience
and hope and have created some great posters which we will have
on display shortly. A big thank you to all participating students
and staff for making it very harmonious and enjoyable.

HARMONY DAY SOMERS CAMP 2016
Seven of our Year 5 & 6 students participated in the DET Somers
School Camp from Tuesday 15th March to Wednesday 23rd
March. One hundred and sixty Year 5 & 6 boys and girls from the
Wimmera participated in the camp. It was a wonderful
opportunity for our students to interact with other participants.
The students slept in dormitories with 20 other boys or girls.
During the day students joined in group activities consisting of 10
boys and 10 girls.
Activities involved surfing, rock climbing, abseiling, bike
education, art sessions, orienteering, archery, and marine
activities. The bonus on the camp was swimming with dolphins!
Night time activities involved a bush dance, disco, campfire
singing, pirate games, drama activities and lots of singing.
The students have gained many skills, experiences and friendships
that will greatly add to their personal development.

Students Somers Experience:
Isaac McGuigan:The disco
night was my favourite. I got
into the finals of the dance
competition. There were lots
of activities and one of my
favourite ones was the
challenge swing which was
18.5m off the ground. I went
to the top. We had to clean
our huts each morning and
report on the weather. We
also sang songs every
morning at assembly. Some
songs were Home among the
Gum Trees, I am Australian
and Ghost Chicken in the
Sky.
Trinity Hollis: At first I was frightened and did not know
anyone, but then I met new people who became best friends that
helped me when I needed it the most. I did extraordinary activities
on Somers Camp which built my confidence and now I feel that I
can do anything. I
loved all the
activities but my
favourite were
high ropes course,
drama and the
flying fox. Before
I went to Somers
Camp I had a fear
of heights!

A reminder to parents to supply an explanation note when your child returns to school after being absence. The Department of Education
and Training requires all student absences to be coded into their Attendance program. Coding is decided by the reason why your child was
absent i.e. illness, dental appointment, personal reasons etc. If no explanatory note is received the absence is classed as an Unexplained
Absence and can be referred to DET, if these are occurring regularly. If you have plans that require your child to be away for a large
amount of time i.e.5 days or more, please advise us prior to the absence so that teachers can supply on going work for the student if neces-
sary. Absences can be advised via a hand written note, school supplied Absence Note, phone call to the office or Xuno. It would be appre-
ciated that any verbal communication of absences to a teacher be followed up with a signed note. Thank you for your co operation.
