Aufgabe 2: Meteorite
Transkript
An enormous meteorite has struck Nicaragua. The meteorite caused a large crater near the airport in the capital city, Managua. The Nicaraguan government believes that the meteorite, which landed on Saturday night, had broken off an asteroid that passed over New Zealand on Sunday. Local residents in Managua reported that they heard a loud explosion before noticing a strong burning smell. The crater left by the meteorite is 12 metres wide and 5 metres deep. There are no reported injuries. The last major meteorite on Earth occurred in February 2013, when an object landed in Russia, causing a shock wave and damage to local buildings. Some 1,500 people were hurt. And now over to the weather forecast with Simon Davids.

Aufgabe 3: Sleep
Transkript
JOHN PETROZZI: So welcome back. And today, we're talking about how to get a great night sleep every night. JOSH HARPER: So what are some tips you'd advise our listeners to ... to get a better night sleep, John? JOHN PETROZZI: The first one I think we can talk about is I've heard listening to white noise or relaxation CDs. JOSH HARPER: And what's “white noise”? JOHN PETROZZI: White noise would be something like an ocean streaming behind you or the sound of birds or the sound of wind going through leaves, those sorts of things. But white noise can even be trucks on the road or whatever you find relaxing. JOSH HARPER: Something to someone sounds soothing? JOHN PETROZZI: Yeah. For instance, for me, I find techno music (JOSH HARPER: Wow.) turns me off. I just, I just want to sleep. I find it really soothing and calming. I find that does something to me, something primeval, I don't know, just helps to relax me. I find it really nice and calming. JOSH HARPER: But please don't take John's advice. JOHN PETROZZI: Exactly. Yeah. Do you find ... Do you use relaxation CDs ever? JOSH HARPER: I don't. JOHN PETROZZI: No? JOSH HARPER: I find the TV hypnotising, actually. JOHN PETROZZI: Aha, ok. Is that a loud movie or something? JOSH HARPER: No, not a loud movie. Maybe just a boring TV show puts me to sleep.
Listen to two men talking about sleep on a radio talk show. While listening, tick the correct answers (a, b, c or d).
You will hear the recording twice.
Audio: John Petrozzi, Josh Harper, Sleep, Living is Easy, http://www.livingiseasy.com.au/podcasts/sleep/, http://www.petrozziwellness.com.au

JOHN PETROZZI: Actually, that's a running joke in my family. Whenever we want to see mom fall asleep, all she needs to do is turn the TV on and she's out within five minutes. So again, that's an ambience sort of noise that your brain can sort of tune out and sometimes does help to relax you, so that's a really good way of doing it. I know my partner, Suzy, she uses relaxation CDs with her and her clients, and a lot of them find them really, really useful. So for instance, listening to some baroque music or some Mozart or something classical, what that does it helps your brain to tune out, slow down, change its rhythm into a slower rhythm and that gets you right into sleep most of the time. But again, it's different for everybody. I know I've got some patients who find that when they go away on holidays and it's really quiet, they can't sleep because it's too quiet, and they're used to the city life, a bit of traffic along the street or people walking past their parlor window. JOSH HARPER: Right. So it's really whatever anyone finds soothing. JOHN PETROZZI: That's it. Yeah, yeah.

Aufgabe 4: Horseboy
Transkript
SPEAKER: Horses are in Harry’s blood. He first sat on one at a few weeks old and has loved it ever since. Now he’s off to one of the UK’s most prestigious equestrian events. HARRY: Horse of the Year Show. MAN: Are you excited? HARRY: Yeah. MAN: Why are you excited? HARRY: Because I am. SPEAKER: When you’re three it’s easy to get distracted, particularly if there are tractors about. But when it really matters, Harry shines. MOTHER: I was just totally amazed and just so, so proud of him to have done so well at such young age in such good competition as well. HARRY: When it’s mine, is that mine, mine … SPEAKER: Having tasted success at other events around the country, the Hatherleigh toddler is ready for the next stage of his riding career. Are there ever accusations it’s a pushy mom that’s behind Harry’s success? MOTHER: He would probably end up going to a show, if he could, every day. He just loves going and competing and seeing his other friends. SPEAKER: Horses are all very well, but it’s good to develop other skills and keep your career options open. Liev Andl, BBC Spotlight.

SPEAKER 1, MADELEINE: Hi Tom, this is Madeleine from UK Garages. I just wanted to let you know your car is fixed. All it needed was a little oil and a wash – everything is fine again, good as new. SPEAKER 2, ROBERT: Hi Tom, this is Robert speaking. I'm afraid I won't be in the office tomorrow. I have to stay in bed because I caught this terrible cold. I'm so sorry but I’ll try and be back as soon as possible. Say hi to everybody from me, bye. SPEAKER 3, ANTHONY: Hi Tom, this is Anthony from The Old Tavern Restaurant. You left a message to book a table for Saturday night. I'm afraid we are very busy on Saturday – would you want to book for Sunday instead? SPEAKER 4, SUSIE: Hi Tom, dear, it's Susie here – I'll probably be late tonight, there is too much traffic on the motorway – might take a while. Don't wait for dinner for my sake. The kids will be starving, so just start without me. Bye. SPEAKER 5, STUART: Hi Tom, it's Stuart here. I was just wondering, are we still playing football on Thursday night? Sorry, I forgot to write it down. Anyway, if we are, could you please call me back and maybe pick me up? My car has just broken down; it'll take a few days to repair. Thank you.

Read this text from a brochure about a different kind of museum in America. Then complete the sentences below using about 1 to 5 words or numbers.
The Pink Palace Museum is one of the largest facilities of its kind in the Southeast. You can walk through a replica of the first self-service grocery store in the country, Clarence Saunders' Piggly Wiggly. Explore the cultural and natural history of the Mid-South through exciting exhibits, dioramas, and audio-visuals. Trace Memphis' development from the time of Spanish explorers through the Civil War and the yellow fever epidemics. Learn from the award-winning medical exhibit how health care grew to be Memphis' largest industry.
You will also see how dinosaurs and fossils dramatically chronicle our ever-changing planet. The museum also hosts a number of touring exhibits for you to see and experience throughout the year.
Each year hundreds of thousands of people visit the Memphis Pink Palace Museum. Our recent 75th anniversary brought a surge of excitement to the City of Memphis. More than 5,000 people attended the birthday party.

Aufgabe 10: Finnish Table Manners
Transkript
When I was a kid growing up in Finland, I used to go to summer camp. When it was time for a meal at summer camp, we had some particular rituals that we would do, which, eh, are based on kind of old-fashioned, eh, Finnish table manners, ehm, in the home. And the meal would begin with a prayer, but we would sing it, so we would sing grace, and when the meal was over and you were clearing off your plate, eh, you would thank the cook. And every child, upon finishing their meal, would separately thank the cook. And sometimes, if it was a special meal, we would all be made to wait until everyone was finished and then we would sing another thank-you-for-the-meal grace and, eh, and all thank the cook in chorus. We would say 'Emännälle kiitos' - 'Thank you to the cook'. One of the big differences that I've noticed between Finnish table manners and American table manners, where I've also lived, is the way that you use your utensils. So in Finland, when you're eating with a fork and knife, you keep your fork in your left hand and your knife in your right hand. And you, eh, stab something with the fork, cut it off with the knife and put it in your mouth with your left hand. In the United States, though, you do the same procedure until you've cut the piece of food and then you switch your hand to your right - your, your fork to your right hand to put it in your mouth. So that's something that, eh, takes some time, but, ehm, eh, it's just a, an old custom, that has, eh, been kept up for whatever reason. But I think some table manners are fairly universal, eh, across Europe, that I've seen, which is, eh, don't eat with your mouth open, don't put your feet on the table and, eh, make nice table conversation.

Aufgabe 11: Important People and Animals
Transkript
Hi, my name is Tina. Let me tell you about the most important people in my life. Now first, there is the most important man in my life. He has known me since I was a little baby and his name is Jeff. Then there is Emma. We all love her, she is dad’s younger sister and we often spend our holidays with her. Then there is Joe. He is not really part of the family. He is two years older and his mum is a friend of my mum and they moved in next door to us about three years ago. Then there is Daisy. I miss her so much. She moved out last year and she has never treated me like her little sister and she lives in Spain now. Then there is Timmie. We got him when Daisy moved out. He is small and hairy and sleeps next to my bed. Another important person is Spiky. That's what we all call him. He helped me to understand maths and he really knows his job very well. Now these were the people who I think are very important in my life.

Aufgabe 12: Chinese New Year
Transkript
My best friend from America is Chinese. She invited me to her house to celebrate the New Year with her family. The Chinese New Year is based on the lunar calendar and is not on January 1st. It is like Easter – the day changes each year. In 2013 it was on February 10th, and in 2014 it will be on January 31st. The New Year's celebration lasts for 15 days, and it's one of the most colorful festivals in the world. It is the most important celebration for the Chinese people and it's always a time of happiness and family as well as feasting. Chinese culture also has a lot of traditions based on superstition and luck. The first thing I noticed when I got there was a red sign on the door. It was the Chinese word for happiness hung upside down. There are also a lot of plays on words. For example, the word for fish is the same as the word for leftover. So we ate fish, but didn't finish it. This is supposed to make us have plenty that will be left over in the year to come. Her family also made sure to clean the house before the New Year. The old dust is unlucky, so you don't want it in your house when the New Year gets here or it will give you bad luck. Gift giving is also an important part of the celebration. Parents give their children little red bags filled with money. The kids are expected to give their parents and grandparents a tangerine. It symbolizes long life. So they wish their parents long life by giving it. Although you can't just give one tangerine, you always have to give at least two or four because odd numbers are unlucky. People also eat kumquats, because they bring luck. Everybody has to wear some red and the decorations are all red and gold. Red is a very lucky color and anyone who doesn't wear red will have bad luck for the rest of the year. It's not all that different from our celebrations though. The Chinese spend the day with family and eat wonderful dinner and then have big parades and set off fireworks just like we do. It was a really interesting experience.
Listen to a report on how Chinese people spend their New Year. While listening, complete the sentences below using about 1 to 5 words or numbers.

12-sided piece to replace £1 coin
A new £1 coin will be introduced in 2017.
The 12-sided piece will replace the circular pound coin which has been used for three decades! There are fears that the current £1 pieces can be faked.
Coinmaker, the Royal Mint, believes 3% of today's pound coins - around 1 in 33 - aren't real.
The announcement came ahead of Wednesday's budget statement by the UK Government's top money minister, Chancellor George Osborne.
A spokesman for the Treasury said: "After 30 years' loyal service, the time is right to retire the current £1 coin and replace it with the most secure coin in the world."

Aufgabe 15: Dog Rescue
Read the newspaper article about some special dogs. Then answer the questions below using about 1 to 5 words or numbers.
Dog Rescue
An animal rescue charity in New Zealand is teaching three unwanted dogs how to drive in order to show how clever the animals can be – and why they deserve to find new homes.
Monty, a giant schnauzer, Ginny, a whippet cross, and Porter, an old beardie cross, have spent the last seven weeks learning 10 or so sequential behaviours that will allow them to start the car, accelerate, change gears and, crucially, steer.
The New Zealand Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, which is behind the initiative, hopes the three dogs will be able to demonstrate their newfound driving skills in a Mini adapted for paws, on live TV this weekend.
Mark Vette, an animal trainer who has been putting the dogs through their paces, said: ‘[There are] no excuses. We’ve got to get in there and show that dogs can drive cars. It’ll be “dial-a-dog” the week after this.’ Mr Vette added that the dogs had already picked up some bad driving habits. ‘A couple of days ago the car was going too fast, the trainer nearly got run over,’ he said.

Aufgabe 16: Jet Lag
Read the article about jet lag. Then answer the questions below using about 1 to 5 words or numbers.
Jet Lag = Brain Damage for Hamsters
What about humans?
Have you ever traveled on a plane from North America to Europe? When you arrived, you probably noticed that it wasn’t very easy to fall asleep at bedtime or wake up in the morning. You had jet lag! Your body’s rhythm acts like a clock to tell you when you should be asleep, and when you should get hungry. When you change the time zone, it takes the clock a few days to adjust to the new schedule.
What if you never really let your clock adjust? Pilots often go for long stretches of time without a regular sleeping and waking schedule.
Erin Gibson of the University of California, Berkeley, wondered how jet lag affects the brain and thinking patterns. To find out, her team experimented with some hamsters.
Gibson and her team didn’t actually send hamsters flying around the world. They created the effect of a long flight in the lab by making the sun rise six hours earlier than usual. If you traveled from New York City to Paris, you’d have the same time difference. Every three days for a full month, the hamsters’ schedule changed by another six hours, basically putting the animals in a permanent state of jet lag.
The result? After a month of changing schedules, the hamsters had trouble with basic learning exercises that are easy for normal hamsters.
Gibson told Science News that jet lag “is having a long-term effect on learning and memory.” More research needs to be done to see if this effect applies to people, too!

Aufgabe 17: Wimbledon
Read the newspaper article about Wimbledon. Then answer the questions below using about 1 to 5 words or numbers.
If your school has a strict uniform policy, spare a thought for the players at Wimbledon, where the dress policy has been tightened up!
Unlike at other Grand Slam tennis tournaments, there is a traditional dress code for players at Wimbledon, which is ‘almost entirely white’. Over the years, players have tried to bend the rules a little, such as with coloured soles on their trainers, bright sweat bands or colourful underwear. No one will be allowed to get away with that this year, though, as all that’s allowed is a 1cm coloured trim on all items of a player’s clothing, including shorts, T-shirts, caps, headbands and socks!
The tournament referee, Andrew Jarrett, has told all the players to expect the rules to be much tougher this year. There will be ‘a supply of suitable clothing’ in the referee’s office for any player who breaks the rules. So, if Andy Murray or Rafael Nadal are seen wearing clothes that don’t quite fit, it could be because they turned up for a match not wearing the ‘white’ thing!Text: Keilly Swift, Wearing the white thing at Wimbledon, 27/06/2014, FirstNews, http://www.firstnews.co.uk/news/wearing-the-white-thing-at-wimbledon-i10911
