NEW FUNCTIONS

HOOPS Metafile Import Location: File>Import>HOOPS Metafile. This is a new import function that allows you to import a HOOPS Metafile (.hmf). A HOOPS metafile describes a three-dimensional scene in graphical terms, but does not support non-geometric data. This function supports lines, polylines, arcs, True Type fonts (notes), shells and points.

HOOPS Stream File Import Location: File>Import>HOOPS Stream File. This is a new import function that allows you to import a HOOPS Stream File (.hsf). A HOOPS Stream File is a compressed file format designed for transmission of graphical data across the Internet. Like the .hmf (HOOPS Metafile) format, the .hsf describes the graphical components of a three-dimensional scene. This function supports lines, polylines, arcs, True Type fonts (notes), shells and points.

Image Import Location: File>Import>Image. This is a new import function that allows you to import any of the following file types: .bmp, .dib, .gif, .jpg or .tif. These import as image entities and, therefore, can be edited (unlike OLE objects). You can change the image’s attributes (size, position, transparency and grayscale). You can import the image into any viewport or construction plane. Also, you can import multiple images into one file. The images are a guide for creating curves and shapes. See the figures below. The first figure shows example images imported into different viewports. The next figure shows the model, using the images as a guide.

Hole Table Location: Detail>Notes>Hole Table. This is a new detail function that allows you to display a table on the viewport that describes one or more holes in geometry. Also, use the function to control the appearance of this table.

BOM Express Function Added Location: Tools>BOM and Table>BOM Express. This is a new tools function that allows you to generate a bill of materials (BOM) quickly. The entire process of creating a BOM involves using the Create a BOM function (Tools>BOM and Table>Create a BOM). The entire process gives you control over several details, including the content of the generated BOM table, using the BOM Definition dialog box and then the Verify BOM Table dialog box. But if you have already done this, and want to generate the same BOM again quickly, you can use BOM Express to bypass these dialog boxes.

File Associations Dialog Box Available Location: Tools>File Associations. The Windows File Associations dialog box shown below allows you to specify file extensions to associate with Key Creator. Then, KeyCreator will be the program that opens such files. (This dialog box also appears when you open KeyCreator after installation.)

11

Page 12: Version 6.0 Release Notes - radix-solutions.comtable of contents about release notes and other documentation.....4 new functions .....5

Settings Export Available Location: Tools>Settings Export. This is a new tools function that allows you to export settings of the current KeyCreator session to an archive file that can be used later as desired (such as for a new version installation). The file has the extension .ksa (KeyCreator Settings Archive file). The .ksa file includes general settings of the session. As shown below, the Settings Export dialog box allows you to add more information to the .ksa files if you select one of more of the options indicated.

12

Page 13: Version 6.0 Release Notes - radix-solutions.comtable of contents about release notes and other documentation.....4 new functions .....5

Settings Import Available Location: Tools>Settings Import. This is a new tools function that allows you to import settings stored in the .ksa file to the current KeyCreator session. See the Settings Import dialog box below. If you select one or more options shown, and the corresponding files are stored in the selected KSA archive, they will be extracted from the proper directories.

Simplify Body Location: Tools>Maintenance>Simplify Body. This is a new tools function that allows you to simplify the selected solid or sheet body by converting spline surfaces and spline edges to analytics where possible. The function also merges redundant faces and reduces tolerant geometry. The figures below illustrate the before and after application of this function, respectively. The first figure shows you the current face geometry types of the part shown. The next figure illustrates the different count of the face geometry types after applying the Simplify Body function. The part shows the faces that changed.

13

Page 14: Version 6.0 Release Notes - radix-solutions.comtable of contents about release notes and other documentation.....4 new functions .....5

Shell from Solid Location: Tools>Extract>Shell from Solid. This is a new tools function that allows you to create a shell entity from the selected solids or sheet bodies. The shell entity is composed of polygon data that is generated based on the existing facets of the selection. (If no facets exist on the selection, they are faceted at the tolerance specified in File>Properties>Units/Tolerances.) The function allows you to create a lightweight entity that you can use for display and basic transformation operations. You may also select solids in part references in an assembly from which to extract shells.

The shell entity is created in the attribute of the solid. It is added to the level of the solid that was selected. If a solid in a part reference is selected, it is created on the level of the solid’s part reference in the assembly part.

New Mechanical Elements Version 6.0 adds the following new functions.

Sprocket Location: Tools>Mechanical Elements>Sprocket. This is a new tools function that allows you to create a sprocket.

Chain Location: Tools>Mechanical Elements>Chain. This is a new tools function that allows you to create a chain entity from the selected sprockets.

14

Page 15: Version 6.0 Release Notes - radix-solutions.comtable of contents about release notes and other documentation.....4 new functions .....5

Bearing/Bushing Location: Tools>Mechanical Elements>Bearing. This is a new tools function that allows you to create a bearing or bushing entity.

Shaft Location: Tools>Mechanical Elements>Shaft. This is a new tools function that

allows you to create a shaft entity.

ENHANCED FUNCTIONS

Level Options Added to SAT Import Options Dialog Location: File>Import>ACIS SAT>Options. The Level Options have been added to the dialog box, as shown below.

15

Page 16: Version 6.0 Release Notes - radix-solutions.comtable of contents about release notes and other documentation.....4 new functions .....5

Support for CGR Translation Added to CATIA V5 Import Location: File>Import>CATIA V5. This function now allows you to import .cgr files (CATIA graphical representation). Visualization data in .cgr files is imported as shell entities.

Also, as shown below, the Convert All Geometry as Shell Entities check box has been added to the CATIA 5 Import Options dialog box. (File>Import>CATIA V5>Options). This check box allows you to translate the geometry in .CATPart and .CATProduct files as visualization data represented as shell entities. When selected, visualization data is generated for the geometry present in the CATIA file which is then translated as lightweight KeyCreator shell entities. The translation is much faster since the actual geometry is not being translated. This is useful if you want to preview the geometry in the file before translating the CATIA geometry to KeyCreator geometry.

16

Page 17: Version 6.0 Release Notes - radix-solutions.comtable of contents about release notes and other documentation.....4 new functions .....5

Scan File Only Added to Common Import Options Dialog Location: File>Import>applicable translator>Options>Common Import Options. As shown below, the Scan File Only check box has been added to the Common Import Options dialog box for the following translators: SolidWorks, Inventor, CATIA V4, CATIA V5, Pro/E, Unigraphics, STEP, Parasolid, IGES. This allows you to scan the file for basic information instead of having to wait until the translation completes to get these details.

17

Page 18: Version 6.0 Release Notes - radix-solutions.comtable of contents about release notes and other documentation.....4 new functions .....5

Style and Width Attribute Support Added to Import IGES, STEP and Parasolid Location: File>Import>IGES, File>Import>STEP and File>Import>Parasolid. These translators now support style and width attributes in addition to color, when translating solids and sheet bodies.

STL Export Location: File>Export>STL. In addition to being able to select for export polylines, solids and sheet bodies, the STL function now allows you to select for export shell entities. This is beneficial when using KeyCreator as the host to import, transform and export large STL files. Such files could contain millions of triangles to re-orient scanned data in STL format for machining purposes.

Style and Width Attribute Support Added to Export IGES, STEP and Parasolid Location: File>Export>IGES, File>Export>STEP and File>Export>Parasolid. These translators now support style and width attributes in addition to color, when translating solids and sheet bodies.

Set Construction Plane Enhanced Location: View>Construction Plane>Set Construction Plane. This function is enhanced to allow you to choose planar spline faces, planar NURBSpline curves and planar 3D spline curves to determine the construction plane. This is done by clicking the entity. The figures below illustrate the construction plane defined by a planar NURBSpline curve and a planar spline face.

18

Page 19: Version 6.0 Release Notes - radix-solutions.comtable of contents about release notes and other documentation.....4 new functions .....5

Polyline Sketch Can Be Closed and Filled Location: Create>Polyline>Sketch. This is an enhancement to an existing create function. This enhancement provides you with the option of closing a polyline sketch and the option of filling it. See the sketch below, for example.

If you choose to close and fill this polyline sketch, KeyCreator automatically connects the start and end points with a straight line and fills it with the desired color, as shown below.

Curve Filleting Enhanced Location: Modify>Fillet. This function is enhanced so that you can create non-planar spline curves when necessary to join tangentially the curves being filleted. This enhancement addresses the case where the curves being filleted do not lie in the same plane. A non-planar, non-arc fillet curve can only be created in 3D construction mode. In 2D construction mode, an arc that is tangent to the projection of the curves into the construction plane is created. 2D construction mode preserves the previous curve fillet behavior.

19

Page 20: Version 6.0 Release Notes - radix-solutions.comtable of contents about release notes and other documentation.....4 new functions .....5

See the figure below, which shows two non-planar curves.

The next figure shows the curves filleted and trimmed in 2D construction mode. The fillet curve is an arc in the construction plane.

The next figure shows the same two curves filleted and trimmed in 3D construction mode with a non-planar spline curve that tangentially meets the filleted curves.

20

Page 21: Version 6.0 Release Notes - radix-solutions.comtable of contents about release notes and other documentation.....4 new functions .....5

Not To Merge Faces Added to Stitch Location: Modify>Topology>Stitch. As shown below, the Merge Redundant Faces after Stitch Completes check box has been added to the Stitch Tolerances dialog box. This allows you not to merge redundant faces once the stitch completes.

Face Colors Now Retained after Stitch Location: Modify>Topology>Stitch. Face colors from sheet bodies being stitched migrate to the stitched solid. If no color existed on the faces of the sheet body, then the sheet body’s color is used as the face color in the stitched entity.

21

Page 22: Version 6.0 Release Notes - radix-solutions.comtable of contents about release notes and other documentation.....4 new functions .....5

Face Colors Now Retained after Unstitich Location: Modify>Topology>Unstitch. Face colors from solid/sheet body being unstitched migrate to the unstitched entity. As with migration of attributes at the solid/sheet level, face colors only migrate if the Modify>Break options in Tools>Options>Entities is set to Use entity attributes.

Edit Hole Dialog Box Enhanced Location: Modify>Solid Feature>Hole. This function now works on all round solid holes, even those generated with Tools>Feature as solid features. Holes generated with Feature are converted internally to a KeyCreator feature. This allows you to modify these using Transform>Box Move, Modify>Solid Feature>Hole and all local face operators without bursting and without loosing Auto Label capability (Detail>Notes>Auto Label). Regular Tools>Feature holes will continue to be made for top, side and wireframe representations. Compare the figures below. The top figure illustrates a part with two holes: One created with the Tools>Feature function and the other created with standard modeling tools. The next figure (with a dialog box) shows an auto label on both types of holes. The Hole dialog box is used to edit the Tools>Feature hole.

22

Page 23: Version 6.0 Release Notes - radix-solutions.comtable of contents about release notes and other documentation.....4 new functions .....5

Tapped & pipe threads are now recognized and available with the Modify>Solid Feature>Hole function. As shown below, the enhancement adds Tap and Pipe buttons (and additional relevant fields) to the Parameters pane of the Hole dialog box (Modify>Solid Feature>Hoel>select hole>Accept.

23

Page 24: Version 6.0 Release Notes - radix-solutions.comtable of contents about release notes and other documentation.....4 new functions .....5

Autolabel Now Works on B-Rep Holes Location: Detail>Notes>Auto Label. When using this function, you can now label all round holes in the solid model.

Extracted Polygons Can Be Filled Location: Tools>Extract>Polygon from Solid. As shown below, the Fill Polygons check box has been added to the Create Polygon dialog box. This allows you to create extracted polygons as outlines or filled with a color.

Assembly Friendly Solid Model Operations The following functions have been enhanced so you can select solids in part references as tools for editing.

Modify Boolean Functions In the following Boolean functions, you can now select solids in part references as tool solids. In all such cases, the tool solid never is destroyed. In the past, you could do this with a solid but not with a solid in a part reference. Modify>Boolean>Unite (Keep) Modify>Boolean>Unite Modify>Boolean>Intersect (Keep) Modify>Boolean>Intersect Modify>Boolean>Subtract (Keep) Modify>Boolean>Subtract The three figures below illustrate the enhancement using the Modify>Boolean>Subtract function to make a mold for packaging. The left-hand figure shows a sprinkler assembly. The middle figure shows the assembly on a block. The right-hand figure shows the result of applying the subtract function.

24
