We are learning how non fiction is organized. Be sure that your child is reading 20 minutes each night. You may want to encourage your child to read non-fiction since were starting a new unit on that genre! In Writing, weve completed our unit on Narrative Writing. Your childs published narrative piece will be in Tuesday Folders this week! Next we will identify characteristics of Expository Writing (writing that explains a topic). We will examine strong examples of expository text and write introductions on our own expository pieces. LANGUAGE ARTS news news Students just completed a unit on Maps. They learned about latitude and longitude and that every place in the world has a unique set of coordinates. Next, we begin a unit on Texas regions. After identifying the four regions of Texas, we will learn what cities, landmarks, and natural resources are in each region and create an overlay map with that information. SOCIAL STUDIES The flu season is coming soon! Be safe by washing your hands oſten and follow the Nurses ps for discussions with your kids. Preventing Flu Preston will hold our Veterans Day celebraon on Friday, November 8. Students are encouraged to invite a family member or friend that is a veteran. There will be a light breakfast, choir performance, an introducon of Veterans, and a parade around the school. Please complete and return this form by October 31 if you plan to bring a veteran. If your guest is unable to aend, and youd like to honor someone special, you may make a poster with your Veterans informaon. Posters will be displayed during the celebraon. We will be dividing up to a 4 digit number by a 1 digit number using the standard algo- rithm, place value blocks, and draw- ing pictures. We will also work on interpreting the remainder in prob- lem solving situations. In Science we are learning about force and motion. As a class we will complete a science experiment. We will determine a question relating to forces to test and observe how forces can affect objects. MATH & SCIENCE Reflecons entries are now due on October 25 to Mr. Preston in the Art room. Making good choices—no sweat! Wear sweats and slippers. Tues. We are crazy about a great future Wear crazy socks (also picture day). Wed. Team up against drugs Wear team jersey. Thurs. Stay strong against drugs Wear camo. Fri. Wild & crazy about healthy choices Wear crazy hair and mismatched clothes. On Halloween (Thurs., Oct. 31) students have the opon to dress up. Costumes should be reasonable and school appropriate. No scary costumes, masks or weapons will be allowed. The costume should be comfortable so that students may parcipate in PE. Science Fair is coming to Preston! In order for students to compete, they must complete a form and turn it in to their homeroom teacher by Oct. 20. The form and rules are found here.
