Viking Longships

• The Vikings had ships called longships. They were long and thin, so they could travel up narrow rivers. They also travelled very fast.

• When the Vikings came to invade, they had a dangerous animal (like a dragon) statue at the front of their ship. However if they were coming peace, they did not show it.

Viking Food• Vikings grew oats, barley and rye for

porridge.• As a replacement for of sugar, Vikings used

honey.• Vikings picked fruit and berries in the

summer months.• Beer was made from barley, wine and

fruits.• Goat meat, horse meat and beef was made

into stews.

Viking Gods• The type of religion in ancient Greece or Rome, the Vikings worshiped

many different Gods and Goddesses. Their religion was an important part of everyday life.

• Odin was the king of the Gods. He was the God of magic, poetry and war.• Thor was the God of lightning. He had iron gloves, a magic belt, and a

hammer. • Freyr was the god of farming and fertility.

Viking warriors• Viking warriors wore chainmail armour,

to protect themselves• They fought with axes, bows and spears

but their main weapon was a sword, which they kept in their sheath.

• Decorations on a Vikings sword show how wealthy the Viking were.• Vikings DIDN’T wear horns on their

helmets, that was just a myth.• They wore shoes with leather straps on

them.

Myths about the Vikings

• One of the largest myths about the Vikings is they wear horns: but there has been nothing recorded of them having such helmets.

• Many imagine that the Vikings were hated everywhere because of their raids, but it seems that they were also respected by some. The French King Charles the III – known as Charles the Simple – gave the Vikings the land

• Some people say that Viking drank from cups made from skulls. Vikings did use cups made of bones but none of them were skull bones.

Viking Clothes• Viking clothes were made from animal skins,

wool and linen• Vikings were clever weavers, and they made

clothes by themselves. • The women and the children made the wool

into yarn, and used dyes to change the colour.• Men wore a tunic and trousers, and women

wore a long dress with an apron over it.

Viking houses

• Viking houses were made of materials such as wood, stone or locks of turf.

• Their houses were quite long, and rectangular.• Their house walls were made out of a material called

wattle, which was a material made off woven sticks and mud to keep out wind and rain.

• Viking houses were usually only one room houses• They kept animals in their houses, so they could share

body heat.

• The places Vikings settled in was known as Danelaw. • Dublin was ruled by the Vikings for a long time.• They took over isle of man, and even parts of

wales!• Yorkshire was the Vikings capital.• They all came from Denmark, Sweden and

Norway

Viking Farms

• Most Vikings lived on farms, and it was a good way to get food.

• They used iron tools like sickles and hoes.• They grew onions, beans and cabbages.• They kept animals on the farm.• Children helped on the farm lots.

Viking Daily life

• Vikings did jobs like: collecting wood, weaving cloth and cooking.

• People washed in wooden tubs, baths weren't invented then.

• Instead of toilets, people used cess-pits - holes outside dug for toilet waste.

Viking children

• Girls had to help cook, weave, spin, making cheese and making clothes.

• Boys had to help on the farm and help make resources.

• Boys were encouraged to fight, with proper weapons!
