The period in primary school is the basis and important foundation for the formation of human behavior. When well educated and equipped with knowledge on the living environment, the pupils will be the core force leading in the future environmental protection and improvement to contribute to the better environment. However, the current curriculum is already too hard for those students. Therefore, introducing and incorporating Environment Education through outdoor activities with interesting and useful games and movies is a good way to entertain them after long, hard learning hours as well as a good method to influence to their environment awareness and action. The method of “learning by playing” would be the most effective way of teaching them as well as be the best way for them to utilize their creativeness in actions for a clean, green and beautiful environment.

1. Rationale for Outdoor activities in Environment Education:

Outdoor activity is one of the 3 ways of learning: class learning, education via working, and extra-curricular which hold a very important role in achieving the education objectives.

Environment education provides pupils with knowledge on environment and more importantly it forms proper understanding and awareness about environment in them. From that they become active in environment protection with the understanding that protecting environment is protecting their health. Thanks to the Extra-curricular activities their knowledge on environment will be improved and be more practical so that they have proper and appropriate behavior toward environment.

Moreover, the outdoor activities with interesting games, contests, field trips will be the condition for them to refresh their minds after hard long learning hours and in the mean time meet their needs and interests. From that, environment protection will be softly delivered to them and get into their minds.

2. Objectives of the project:

Increase the awareness in environment protection for primary pupils (initially in Nguyen Binh Khiem Primary School) to train & have a young generation with environmentally friendly behavior. The specific objectives are:

Provide the pupils with knowledge on environment and from that increase the knowledge on environment protection.

Have positive and for environment create good habits in: keeping the public area clean and tidy, putting garbage in the designated areas, saving water, planting and protecting trees...

Compile an Environment Education material for the Outdoor activities suitable with the condition of primary schools to contribute to the replication of Environment Education in school.

3. Success criteria of the project:

Develop an Environment Education for primary school pupils to apply in the Outdoor activities.

2

Page 3: Vietnam Innovation Day Application Form - World Banksiteresources.worldbank.org/INTVIETNAM/Resources/P195Eng.doc · Web view(week 4) Trees Movies: The kid’s garden Lesson 5 1 1st

Enrich the pupils’ knowledge about environment and environment protection from that form good behavior and habits.

Equip the primary school teachers with knowledge and teaching methods on environment from that replicate environment trainers.

Complete the materials on Environment Education through Outdoor activities.

4. The infrastructure and organization of the school:

Ho Chi Minh city is a place that has the strongest economic development in the country. However, besides the positive results gained from the economic development, there is negative impact on the environment. According to the statistics in 2002, there are 600 industrial factories, 22500 home craft workshops with backward equipment. These are also not equipped with any equipment to prevent pollution from production. This has greatly contributed to the pollution of the whole city. Besides, the limited awareness of people in these factories, workshops, other businesses and even in community in environment has also contributed to the deterioration of the environment. District 1 is a center district in Ho Chi Minh city – an industrial city in the process of development – so it is also affected by these negative impacts.

Therefore, improving the awareness in environment protection for people in the District 1 in particular and people in Ho Chi Minh city in general is very necessary. Among them, primary school pupils play a very important role as they will be the little propagandists who could communicate and promote environment protection in their families and communities. In addition, they are still young so it is easy for them to approach and learn new concept, and are sensitive about environment issues. These are favorable condition for effective Environment Education with long-lasting results. Consequently, in this project we selected primary school pupils as target group for Environment Education.

After the assessment on operation as well as infrastructure of primary schools in the District 1, we selected Nguyen Binh Khiem Primary School to implement the project as it has favorable condition for implementing the project (in terms of infrastructure, organization, number of pupils, quality of pupils, learning curriculum and Outdoor programs).

4.1. Infrastructure:

The school has a spacious 3-storey building. There are separate Wash rooms for male and female pupils on each floor.

Activities carried out by the school:

Learning time table/schedule for the whole year: see attached document Encouraging the creativeness of the pupils through picture drawing/painting with

given theme: “environment around us”; organized the drawing competition “The green stroke” at city level.

In the school year of 2004-2005, the school organized some activities with themes like: “small green plan” (1 pupil collect 1kg of used paper for recycling and fund

4

raising from selling these paper to producer; this activities is carried out once a year), the movement of “for a clean and green city”

Strong and regular youth pioneer activities Comment and suggestion box named “What I want to share”. Teachers receive

letters from the box with great care and consideration as well as appropriate follow up action. These letters are widely shared by being posted on the bulletin board of the school.

Advised pupils not to buy snacks from street vendors selling food around the gate of the school or on the pavement as they are not safe.

Organizing school clean up, garbage collecting, trees planting activities within the premises.

All teachers in the school take part in the competition on “Food safety and sanitation” organized by the city.

From the assessment of the Nguyen Binh Khiem Primary School it can be concluded that: the infrastructure here is enough and there is the interest of introducing and incorporating Environment Education through Outdoor activities of the board of director. This is a good condition for us to implement the project with the best possible results.

5. The innovativeness of the project.

5.1. Overview of the Environment Education for primary school pupils within the city area:

According to our research, within the Ho Chi Minh city area there are few Environment Education program for primary school pupils, only the program 415 (a development project between Belgium Government and Vietnam) is fully and properly completed. With the objectives of increasing the awareness on environment protection for primary school pupils in the area of District 6 to train to have a young generation with environmentally friendly behavior, the 415 project has conducted a series of activities initially at 2 school and now expended to 5 schools in District 6. It is planned that by the end of this month all the content, materials, and equipment of the program will be transferred to school in Ho Chi Minh city. The timeline of the project from 1999 to 2005 is divided into 3 phases as follow:

Phase 1: from September 1999 to August 2001 at 2 schools of Phu Dong (in ward 11) and Pham Van Chi (in ward 8)

Phase 2: from September 1999 to November 2003 at 3 schools of Kim Dong (in ward 3), Binh Tien (in ward 7) and Nhat Tao (in ward 4)

Phase 3: from December 1993 to April 2001 improve the sustainability of the Environment Education activities and expand to the rest 11 wards of District 6.

The to-date results of the project: Providing knowledge on environment and environment protection for pupils of

forms 4 and 5 and providing knowledge and method of teaching on environment for key teachers in 5 schools in the project.

Compiling a set of training materials on environment including: lecture note, guides to make training equipment and picture illustrations.

Compiling extra reading material on garbage named: “together we clean up the planet”

Organizing field trips to Botanical Garden, Thu Duc water plant, Nhieu Loc Thi Nghe canal and streets where the pupils study.

Teaching through games, role play, making model, drawing... to make it easy for the pupils to remember.

Create one environment page in Nhi Dong newspaper

5.2. The innovativeness of the project:

Basing on the success of the project 415, we will develop some tools to serve more actively for Environment Education for primary school pupils. In implementing our project we will try our best to use all possible ways and methods to complete our project with the highest results.

Time of the project: in the Outdoor timetable of the school on the 2nd and 4th

weeks each month.

Way of organizing activities: Work closely with project management board, school management board, teachers, Youth Pioneer groups. Pupils will be the center of the learning activities; teachers, group leaders are only the facilitators.

Contents: 4 topics in the projects (garbage, water, electricity, trees...) are well prepared to details. Environment Education will be organized in the forms of games, competition, cartoon shows, drawing, singing, dancing... Due to the time limit, the transfer of knowledge and methodology will be conducted right at the beginning. In order to increase the effectiveness and replicability of our project, the project will work with Ho Chi Minh city Television to send message about environment protection through program for the youth if possible.

The innovativeness of the project was shown through out the implementation of the project and mainly through: the way to organize and method of doing.

In terms of organizing:

The Outdoor activities will be organized for pupils in form 4 in the school year of 2005-2006 (around 80 pupils)

Basing on the research on the organization of Nguyen Binh Khiem Primary School, we apply the organizing model in which leaders of the youth pioneer groups will be the core and from that we develop human resources to form Environment clubs.

Teachers who work directly with pupil will play a very important role in the whole training process. Teachers with the role of guides will assist in providing knowledge for the pupils. Teachers will be the ones who raise and conclude the problem and pupils will handle the part in problem solving.

Our project team will support with specialty/expertise and equipment.

6

Page 7: Vietnam Innovation Day Application Form - World Banksiteresources.worldbank.org/INTVIETNAM/Resources/P195Eng.doc · Web view(week 4) Trees Movies: The kid’s garden Lesson 5 1 1st

In terms of the method of doing:Creating picture illustration with cartoon, news report, games...Developing hand book of Environmental Education games and songs.

6. Beneficiaries and participants:

Teachers and pupils are the main beneficiaries from the project. Besides, the project will have indirect impact to pupils’ parents and community via the pupils.

Teachers are the connection between the project and the pupils and are the direct trainers. Therefore, they will be well equipped with the knowledge on environment through the training courses provided by the project.

Regarding the pupils: Beside the benefits mentioned in the objectives, when taking part in this project they will know how to take care of themselves and their health to better study in school. This is also the desires of the project team, their parents and teachers.

The replicability:

The replicability of the project depends on many factors. The followings are the factors of great impact:

All teaching materials are open meaning that teachers, pupils can use their knowledge and creativeness to make necessary modification suitable to their condition and environment.

The project gives prominence to the close linkage between the content and the method of showing; between the contents themselves but there is still flexibility.

The project meets the need of pupils and also meets the need of society - the need of living and working in a clean and fresh environment.

In order for all schools to implement (or continue???) the project well when the project finishes, the project team will encourage the foundation of the environment protection fund by taking some money from the fund contributed by the pupils’ parents or add a small amount to the regular class fund.
