“How do the illiterate tribal women be able to solar electrify the villages. ”A visitor to Tilonia

SOLAR ENERGY

With the help of the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE), Government of India Bare-foot College was able to conduct a pilot project in the Manoharpur block of West Singhbhum Dis-trict. 40 women from 20 villages were selected to undergo training to be solar engineers and elec-trify their villages. A meeting was held between Barefoot College, Ravindra Batra (Deputy Secret-ary, Jharkhand), Asok Kumar (JREDA Director) and Praveen Toppo (Tribal Commissioner). Meet-ings were held with each of the heads of the villages and also meetings with the communities. In these community meetings, they were asked to select a woman from their village to undergo train-ing and for it to be someone who deserved this opportunity.

Important conclusions from meetings:40 women from 20 villages of Manoharpur Block to be selected and sent to Tilonia to be trained to become Barefoot Solar Engineers. Solar lanterns and charge controllers will be sent back with these women.

With the support of JREDA, solar modules, batteries and wiring kit will be delivered to these 20 villages.

In September, 19 women from 10 villages came to Tilonia with members of ALOK to take part in this training program.WBSE MNRE Project Sept. to March 2013

KHAMAYATI

Khamayati has been inspired by the rich and varied legacy of Rajasthani culture, and Komal Kothari (Komalda, Komal Kaka), who worked with and established the modern context of these great traditions. SWRC Tilonia, Barefoot College, was initiated into understanding this extraordinary musical tradition, and collaborated with Rupayan Sansthan and Komal Kothari in organising Lok Utsavs since 1984. The know-ledge and legacy of Komalda’s tradition of collective work with folk culture continues to inspire all our ef-forts.

Khamayati is the raga used as the invocation for the beginning of all concerts. The name was chosen as both an invocation, and a celebration of tradition. The project will look at their music, and the community’s so-cioeconomic conditions. It will help wherever needed with providing support and assistance to create a better environment for developing their musical tradition.

The Khamayati website khamayati.org  records the vibrant repertoire and enables lovers of this great tradi-tion to connect directly with the musicians. Carol Barker, Illustrator and art teacher has been a constant vis-itor to Tilonia since 1977. She published a book about SWRC called “Arjun and his village Tilonia” in 1978. In recent years she has been fascinated by Rajasthani music and raised $50,000 from her son Julian Dunker -ton, to help promote folk cultural expression and keep tradition alive.

The project began with a workshop in consultation with the Manganiars and Langas on the 28th and 29th January 2012 in Barmer. The musicians collectively discussed critical issues, and looked at their own cultural richness and their future. Attention was paid specifically in re-establishing their repertoire, the dis -semination of lyrics and songs, by documenting and using notations so that they could be preserved for pos-terity.

Various activities such as surveys, performances, workshops and lecture demonstrations for the project were planned and executed during the year 2013- 2014:
