• Letter from Shawn Small

A year and a half ago, a small team from Irving Bible Church set out on a daunting task. As we approached the 50th anniversary of our community, we desired to dissect and assess our mission philosophy. After gathering a balanced team that consisted of staff and volunteer, church elder and congregant, full time ministers and business people, we studied the history, philosophy, accomplishments, goals and dreams of missions at IBC. After six months, we cleared the cobwebs and began to dream about the future. Our assessment process came to a close and we moved in to a season of articulation of the vision.

Providentially, IBC began a visioning process for the whole body around that time. I was also privileged to be a part of the visioning team, which allowed us to move forward in unison with the vision, philosophy and theological foundations of the church. Those six months were full of excitement. Our missions team met several times, hammering through everything on the table. We meticulously chose words, phrases and ideas that reflected the call of Irving Bible Church. We have worked hard to hone the vision and work toward obedience as a body rather than a general support of ‘missions’. One of the first things the team was unanimous about was that mission was not what we do but who we are. It cannot be defined nor fulfilled through a ‘department’. What we can do is create a team who resources, encourages, and becomes a gatekeeper of where God has called IBC into mission.

At times the process has been painful as we made decisions to end support for certain ‘causes’ that fell outside the particular and unique call of IBC. But the team walked with a consensus, knowing that obedience was better than sacrifice.

What you now hold is the culmination of a year’s worth of work from numerous people in IBC who have been called to serve in and through this body. Through this document we hope to articulate/clarify our body’s God-given vision for mission.

II. The IBC Missional MandateMissions at IBC exists to facilitate life-transformation through Jesus Christ with people and organizations committed to empowering locals, leadership development, and holistic engagement.

• Empowering Locals

Recognizing the advantage strong local leaders have in building bridges of influence, we partner with indigenous leaders to equip them for sustainable ministry.

As a partner:

• Are you committed to serve as a co-laborer in the community where you called?

• What is your strategy for working with or the development of local leadership?

• How have you equipped local leaders to serve within your organization

(Ephesians 4: 11- 13 – Philippians 2:2 - Hebrews 10:24)

• Discovering – Developing- Deploying

At IBC, we desire to help each person discover, develop and pursue the unique service-mission God has placed within their hearts.

As a partner:

• Can you articulate your mission in one sentence?

• What makes your ministry unique- setting it apart from all others?

• How can IBCers actively engage in your mission?

(Ephesians 2:10- 1Timothy 4:14-16- Acts 1:8- Matthew 28:18-20)

• Engaging Holistically

To bring about sustainable healing, we help equip those we serve to pursue their ministry through meeting spiritual, relational, and physical needs.

As a partner:

IIId. Guidelines for Local Partnerships

To our prospective partners:

We at IBC believe that the church (God’s people) is the window through which the people of our community see God and His concern for their spiritual, physical and relational needs. We feel called to support those who are marginalized, disenfranchised, wounded, mistreated and broken by supporting nonprofits that are doing God’s work in our community in an excellent way. This allows us to serve our community, and allows us to offer a wide range of options for involvement and service to each person in our congregation.

We recognize that there are many great local organizations doing the work of God in

the DFW area. We also understand that we have the responsibility of stewardship over our resources, and want to support those organizations that reflect our unique gifting and interests. For those we support and those who are requesting support it is important to understand what we are looking for as we make future decisions for partnership.

Each nonprofit asking for donations and support goes through a process of selection. Each partner candidate should be fully aware of our guidelines and then submit their application by April 1st for the following budget year. Applications will be available online by February 1st each year. Our Mission’s Team, a group of mission- focused members, elders and staff, will gather the second week in April to decide if candidates for funding, and current recipients fall within the mission of Local Partnerships.

VISION FOR LOCAL PARTNERSHIPS

IBC also seeks to invest in organizations that are serving in areas we believe God has equipped and has led us to serve.

We believe God has gifted and blessed us to serve the city of Irving as our immediate neighbor. We have seen God open amazing doors within the city to build relationships of trust and encouragement as we look to provide for the needs of the community in which we live. We recognize the great need within the city for collaboration between all sectors, including the church, to provide for the needs of those who are underserved, homeless, physically and spiritually hungry, and under-educated.

Page 19: Web viewWhat makes your ministry ... This is a fully staffed free nonprofit clinic on campus at IBC which ... We recognize that there are many great local

We also recognize that the heart of God always leans toward those that are considered to be the “least of these”. We have chosen to invest in West Dallas, a pocket of the metroplex with the highest poverty rate and one of the highest in our country. We seek to serve that community, bringing the gospel in word and deed, to those who have found themselves caught in generational poverty of all kinds.

God has also placed a heavy burden for the sexually exploited on the hearts of His people at IBC, and we believe this to be our unique calling. Our desire is to bring awareness and support around the issue of sexual exploitation of every kind across our city.

IBC DESIRES TO INVEST IN PARTNERS WHO ARE…• Working in our unique calling and location

• Strategically working to raise and release local Christian leaders

• Strongly connected to the DNA of Irving Bible Church; specifically, interested in selfless gain and willing to engage in many expressions of our faith to further the kingdom.

• Co-operating with others to accomplish the greater work

• Working with the marginalized

• Passionately pursuing making the name of Christ known through word and deed

Global Partners

Global Partners are individuals that are indigenous to the communities where they serve. Locals have the ability to equip others; they are dynamic and influential, humble and are respected by the locals not as a king but as a servant leader. Homegrown leadership, regional influence, and a strong relationship to their surrounding communities are all characteristics of a global partner.

IBC desires to invest in Global Partners who are…

• Co-operating with others to accomplish the greater work

• Working with the marginalized

• Passionately pursuing making the name of Christ known

Missionaries

Missionaries are individuals who are not indigenous to the community where they wish to serve. Servant leadership, empowerment of local leaders, holistic engagement, and a desire to accomplish specific goals are all characteristics of a Missionary. A priority will be given to individuals who seek to serve alongside one of IBC’s established Global Partners.

Missionaries are divided into two groups:

Long Term

Long Term Missionaries are individuals who plan to serve within a community for one year or longer.

IBC desires to invest in Long Term Missionaries who have…

• A working plan to hand off their role to a local when it is time

• A strategy to raise and release local Christian leaders

• An established history of success in their area of focus

Page 24: Web viewWhat makes your ministry ... This is a fully staffed free nonprofit clinic on campus at IBC which ... We recognize that there are many great local

Once it is established by the missions team that the candidate meets these guidelines, the candidate will be led through a series of interviews that equals the hiring process for potential staff members of Irving Bible Church.

When an individual becomes a Long Term Missionary, IBC will commit to quarterly investments of the individual’s annual financial needs.

Short Term

Short Term Missionaries are individuals who plan to serve within their community for less than one year.

IBC desires to invest in Short Term missionaries who are…

• Dedicated to raising and releasing local Christian leaders

• Well-equipped to be effective in their area of service

When an individual becomes a Short Term Missionary, IBC will commit to invest in 10% of the individual’s financial needs.

Global Awareness Trip Support

Irving Bible Church is committed to raising Global Awareness within our community. Further, we believe that any time an individual interacts with a new culture the entire body benefits from their experience.

If a member of the IBC community is going on an International Short Term Trip International Partnerships will provide 10% of the total cost of their trip up to $500.

Sending Missionaries

We understand that God calls individuals in our community to serve even though it may fall outside of our strategic guidelines. While we may not be able to support them financially we will support them by giving them our blessings and commission them for the field. We will also provide them with a one-time gift of up to one thousand dollars toward their outgoing expenses.
