Dear friends,
The churches of our benefices will be taking part in ‘Thy Kingdom Come’. This is a global prayer movement, which invites Christians around the world to pray between Ascension and Pentecost, 30th May – 9th June, for more people to come to know Jesus Christ. What started out as an invitation from the Archbishops’ of Canterbury and York in 2016 to the Church of England has grown into an international and ecumenical call to prayer.
The power of prayer is known by many in a whole variety of situations and we can never underestimate the good that comes from our prayers. Sometimes it’s hard to know what to pray for in difficult circumstances. I remember particularly in the early days of the war in Syria being asked – what should we pray for? At such times it’s about handing a situation over to God, asking for a way forward to be shown…and praying for God’s loving peace to be known. Along with this, we must also understand that what we ask for isn’t necessarily answered in the way we want, expect or anticipate. It is then about trusting that God is guiding us into the best place and circumstances.
Prayer is about sharing with God the concerns and the joys that we have. It’s about giving thanks to God and rejoicing with God as well as sharing our frustrations and even anger over injustices that we see. It is about praying for others as well as ourselves – praying for our loved ones as well as those we don’t like or don’t understand. It’s even about praying for those who cause devastation and destruction of whatever form – praying that their hearts will be turned away from such things and instead to peace and love. Prayer involves saying sorry to God for the wrongs that we do and seeking God’s forgiveness.
If prayer is something you’re not used to then you may want to use the words that Jesus taught us in the form of the Lord’s prayer:
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name; thy kingdom come; thy will be done; on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation; but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, the power and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen
And if you want to know more about how to pray then please do get in touch with me…I’m more than happy to help. There are also lots of resources about and if you want to know more about ‘Thy Kingdom Come’ then if you have access to the internet you may wish to look at www.thykingdomcome.global/. There are also some daily prayer booklets available in the churches for you take. At the time of writing this our final arrangements for ‘Thy Kingdom Come’ in our churches have not been finalised. Please look out in church notices or get in touch with me to find out more.
Every blessing
Revd Helen

FROM THE EDITOR
After 19 years of editing this magazine I have decided the time
has come for me to retire! I plan to edit the next two issues –
July, and August/September, after which I will stand down.
Would you like to take on this role? For many years I managed to
juggle the work around family and a full-time job, so it’s not impossible
and indeed I have found it very rewarding to serve church and
community in this way. If you are interested in knowing more, or if
you have new ideas or suggestions, please let me or the Rector know.
The Clypping of the Church at Edgmond will take place this year on
30th June at 3.00 pm. Our front cover photos (left, top and bottom)
are of the Clypping in 2017 and the centre picture is a drone’s view of
last year’s Clypping. On the right is a photo of the Clypping held in
1904 (from the Tripadvisor website, submitted by Jeff W).
The next edition of the Parish Magazine and Village News will cover
the month of July 2019 and the deadline for contributions is Sunday
2nd June. Please do your best to let me have your news and articles in
good time. Contributions can be delivered to me at the address on the
inside front cover, or preferably emailed to me at
[email protected]. Photos of all the activities going on in our
villages are also very welcome.
Don’t forget that you can also read this magazine online on both the
village and church websites (addresses on the front cover).

MORNING PRAYER
Each Tuesday in June we will meet for Morning Prayer at 8.30 am in St John
the Baptist, Bolas Magna. Please join us as we read from the Old and New
Testament and pray for our communities, the world and those in need.

THE CLYPPING SERVICE IN EDGMOND
This year the Clypping Service will take place on
Sunday June 30th at 3.00 pm, the Sunday on
which we will be celebrating our Patronal Festival.
This special and unique service is for the whole
community, not just the church congregation. On
this occasion St Peter’s is acting as caretaker of
the village’s ancient traditions. We hope that we
will be able to complete the circle round the
church as has been done for the past 1000 years,
if not more.
The next Messy Church at St Peter’s will be coming soon.
Look out for the posters and flyers for more information.

CHURCH CLEANING
Would you be willing to join a rota of people to keep our church clean and tidy? If so, please do contact the Rector or one of the Churchwardens as soon as possible.
Our thanks go to Anne Price who has selflessly undertaken this work during the past year.

DANIEL CORLETT
Please keep Daniel and Angela Corlett, and their three children, in your prayers, as he is made Deacon at Coventry Cathedral on Sunday 30th June.
In the summer he will become Curate at a parish in South Warwickshire and they will be embarking on their new life, new schools for each of the children, and possibly for Angela, too.
MICHAEL WATTS 03.12.1934 - 22. 04. 2019
We heard from Chichester, from Meg’s daughter, that Mike had died on Easter Monday. They had had a glorious family B.B.Q. on Easter Day. What an appropriate farewell party for such a splendid man!
Mike was an ingenious, artistic, creative and inspiring man, tremendously talented, witty and modest to boot.
He and his wife Meg allowed our church youth group to use Trinity Cottage, their home, for a meeting place for over 10 years, whether they were there or not. Up the stairs we had the use of the little kitchen. The group was started in 1982 for the 16 or so post-Confirmation candidates, with Jean Weidman at its head. One of the boys even met his wife at the group and is shortly to be ordained. Such fun they had with B.B.Q’s, “mucking about in a boat” on the river Meese, lovely services in church, outings, etc, just generally bonding as teenagers. When they left, many went on to join Sigma in Newport, run by Mal Hawksworth, who was not ordained at that time ! All thanks to Mike and Meg’s generosity.
Mike, an architect by profession, was a prominent member of the art group along with Meg, a miniaturist. They painted a tromp l’oeil in the Provost’s House and together they designed and engraved the Millennium window on the North aisle of St Peter’s, involving the whole village, schools and many groups in its creation.
It was a great honour and pleasure to have known this kind Renaissance man. His funeral was on May 23rd at Chichester crematorium.

Edgmond WI is organising a Gardens Outing on Wednesday 19th June. In the morning, we shall visit Powys Castle, which has free entry to National Trust members and a charge of £12 for non-members. Lunch is available there, or there is space to eat a packed lunch. In the afternoon, we shall be visiting a private garden in Llanymynech, belonging to Group Captain Jon Fyne and his wife, where we will enjoy a cream tea. The cost for this part of the day is £4.50. Coach travel is provided throughout. If you would like to join this trip, please contact Dianne on 01952 825564 or Diana on 01952 811561 as soon as you can. We look forward to hearing from you.
PARISH WARDEN’S REPORT
There were two reports of crime in and around Edgmond during April, and P.C. Lee Thomas supplied the information.
During the evening of 15th April a dog being walked near Harper Adams University campus was attacked by a “husky type” dog. The attack also caused fear to the dog walkers who thought they might be bitten as well.
16th and 17th April saw criminal damage caused by spray painting of graffiti around the Rock Hole area. It is important to note that the Police are aware of the name of an individual whose name has been circulating the village (as the person responsible), but that the Police would like to make it clear that enquiries thus far have already eliminated that person.

EDGMOND PARISH COUNCIL NEWS
Welcome to a new year in the work of the Parish Council.
Edgmond did not have a Parish election on 2nd May, as there were insufficient
candidates and therefore it was deemed to be an Uncontested Election.
The Members returned were Robert Higginson, Gwyn Jones, Allan Wilson, Cath
Edwards, Keith Arbuthnot and Steve Bentley.
At the Annual General Meeting on 13th May, they will be asked to read and sign
their Declaration of Acceptance of Office, along with Mr G Williams.
At the recent Annual Parish Meeting, the Chairman expressed the thanks and
appreciation of the Parish Council and residents to the Councillors who had
decided not to stand for re-election. As well as thanks to those who had been
Councillors throughout the last four year period, we said good-bye to Cllr
Hayhurst, Cllr Ryan and Cllrs Penny & Maurice Hughes. Their support over many
years has been much appreciated.
The street light upgrade programme has commenced. As previously explained,
this is a three year programme to replace all the street lights with LED. This will
be more efficient and represents best value for the Parish Council. It was
pleasing to negotiate a regime that will enable lights to be dimmed for periods
throughout the night, which not only is a cost-saving element of the scheme, but
it also offers protection to wildlife.
Can you please note the new email address for the Parish Council –
Kind regards
Katrina, Edgmond Parish Clerk

ST PETER’S CofE PRIMARY SCHOOL
EASTER END OF TERM SERVICE – APRIL 10th 2019
All the children and their teachers were in church for the 'end of Easter term' service. The many parents, grandparents, friends and members of the church who attended were treated to a wonderful presentation of the Easter story with readings and prayers, actions, and songs and choral speaking. Quite a number of them enjoyed coffee/tea afterwards.
There were too many children taking part to be able to name them individually - it was so great too to hear and see the children who did not have a solo moment sounding and looking so engaged, as they sang in their class groups. A lot of work had gone into the preparation! And to such good effect!
The Rector spoke about the sadness and the gladness of Easter, and both these themes were, of course, an integral part of the service. The rhythms of Easter Jubilate promoted plenty of toe-tapping and 'A Million Dreams' from 'The Greatest Showman' gave us a final upbeat message: 'I think of what the world could be...'

We seek to appoint a Church Organist and leader of the SATB Choir
An exciting opportunity to provide organ accompaniment for services and to lead our established adult choir.
We are a welcoming congregation of around 40 attending the 10.30 am Sung Eucharist on Sundays
when music is an important part of the worship. The village church is central tradition and the choir are keen to provide
a good standard of singing with anthems sung whenever possible.
We have an excellent 2 manual and pedal organ by Nicholson and Lord of Walsall
built 1885. Extensively re-built in 1999 by Peter Collins Ltd with additions (3 rank mixture to Great and 16ft Trombone to pedal. Reeds re-voiced and new
mechanical action). Further work by Cousans Ltd in 2018.

GOOD FRIDAY WITNESS WALK
This was a new venture, which turned out to be
very successful. Starting at St Lawrence Church,
we walked the mile to St Chad’s Kynnersley,
stopping in several locations for a bible reading. On
arrival at St Chad’s we enjoyed Hot Cross Buns,
sitting outside in the glorious sunshine. It proved
to be a very meaningful morning.
KYNNERSLEY PARISH COUNCIL NEWS
Hello everyone.
Can I start by saying that after many months of email issues, the Parish Council
now has a new email address:
There was no election for the Parish on 2nd May, due to the fact that there were
insufficient nominations. Kynnersley Parish was therefore deemed to have an
uncontested election which saw Ruth Evans, Collette Wassell and Neil Dobson
returned as Parish Councillors. Steve Bentley was also included.
Thanks are extended to Harry Gregory and Tam Park, who had decided not to
stand for re-election this year. Their contributions have been much appreciated
and we sincerely hope that they will keep in touch with the Parish Council and that
they will continue to offer information and advice in our work.
We look forward to a busy year and hopefully we will see some local residents at
our Parish Council Meetings.
Kind regards
