From the Desk Of Fr. John SSPP Parish School is ready and waiting for you! We are all excited to begin another school year. The summer break was good for all…to rest and be refreshed. That gave Ms. Kirk our school principal time to do many things…and invite many others to help improve…and add…and bring things up to date! We have such a great opportunity to give an ex-cellent education to our children…students…as well as, a vibrant and loving Catholic faith for-mation. Both of these efforts give a well-rounded program of growth for our children and families. We have a wonderful and very dedicated staff who give their all for the kids…and are ready to help them and parents whenever there is a need. Make sure you take advantage of the wonderful opportunities we have to offer…and tell others about it/us…SSPP Catholic Parish School for over 150 years! Sunday, August 11 at the 10:30 Mass…a spe-cial blessing will be offered for teachers…and students…called a Back Pack blessing. Open house will be held in the school following the Mass…come on over…everyone is invited and welcome! We learn many things from our parents and oth-ers who care for us when we are young. There can be practical things…tie your shoes, brush your teeth…and you can add all the rest which we need as we are growing up. Sometimes sports become a real focus…lots of activity, exer-cise, fun with friends, competition…and all the rest. However, we might want to look at the val-ues of life that will last beyond our childhood in-terests. Are we as dedicated to making sure they learn those lessons and learn them well? Where else will they acquire them and from whom? Certainly the lessons Jesus teaches His disci-ples…since they were already adults…were to be put into practice…and shared with other adults. Over the last few weeks, the Gospels have related stories…some parables…and we have heard direct lessons from Jesus. We may recall the layers question about ‘inheriting’ eter-

nal life…, which gave us the answer… ‘Love God with your whole heart…and your neighbor as yourself.’ The story of the Good Samaritan taught us about who is our neighbor…but also how do I become a good neighbor to those in need…no matter who they are…giving…caring…sharing…of more than time and talent…but also treasure. The visit of Jesus to the home of Martha and Mary gave us the lesson of hospitality and ser-vice, which must be based on the person, and the teaching of Jesus… ‘Mary sat at the feet of Jesus and listened to His teaching.’ And again, Jesus’ response to a disciple’s request to teach them how to pray gave us the ‘Lord’s Prayer’…and the unique and deeply personal relationship with God as ‘Our Father’ who cares for us and will give us the gift of His Holy Spirit if we but ask Him. We find Jesus challenged…invited…almost de-manded to settle a family dispute about inher-itance. Jesus looks deeper to find and address the real issue…one of the seven capital sins… ‘Greed’ or as we might call it ‘avarice.’ The story that Jesus relates to the proper use…and espe-cially the improper use…and desire for money…possessions…security…in $$$. To be a good steward means that we know God is the source of all that we have and are…and we generously share that with others out of love of God and neighbor. The man in the story did neither of these…and so we must ask ourselves if we are being good stewards. This week the lesson continues around pos-sessions…wealth…treasure. Jesus urges us to be like servants waiting for our Master’s re-turn…ready…vigilant…and doing the right thing. It centers on the phrase… ‘For where your treas-ure is, there also will your heart be!’ Are we act-ing like prudent and faithful stewards…what might we change to grow in the way Jesus teach-es us?

(Because people have been asking...my recent testing came out “all clear.”)

As Jesus said about some evil spirits: “This kind cannot come out except by prayer and fasting.” Mark 9:29 We will continue our prayers for our Church, Diocese and Parish, espe-cially for the clergy and the victims of any type of abuse. We pray that the issues in the church may be addressed and that we have a spirit of repentance, healing and renewal. The type of issues we are dealing with needs lots of prayers and fasting. Prayers especially need for Deacon Fernando. This coming week we will have two hours of prayer in the Church: Monday from 2-3 pm and Tuesday from 6-7 pm.

Rest in Peace

ZIGGY’S WISDOM: Think about it, do you ever “unconsciously” pray, “Please don’t change me, Lord.” ZIGGY’S TAKE: Sometimes all of us, at least for a period, be-come complacent, settle in, and are satisfied with how we are. But this is just NOT RIGHT! We must always be striving to be-come better, holier persons. Let your prayer become, ”Change me, Lord, that I might be more like You!”
