From the Desk Of Fr. John Happy New Year…in just a few days! We begin another decade as we move into 2020. The numbers of 2020 keep coming up as news and commentators look to the coming election sea-son…trade wars…and all kind of potential events and changes that could happen. We have gotten used to the phrase of 2020. The past we cannot change…but we can learn some lessons from our experience. We are not yet into the New Year…but having learned from the past, we can then set a direction, which will bring blessings to each of us and our world. This Christmas we shared another book with everyone who came to Christmas Masses. It was another book published by Matthew Kelly and the Dynamic Catholic organization. The title of the book… ‘Rediscover the Saints.’ He planned it not to be a biographical history of the saints and their lives…but something a bit differ-ent. Matthew tries to draw us into the real life ex-periences…his own…his family…and the life and challenges that a particular saint faced in real life. The point was to help us realize that the saints are not on high pedestals or somehow untoucha-ble…but can be our friends and helpers on our life and faith journey. Matthew invites us to re-flect…to really identify with the person of the saint…and see how that may affect our lives and choices…in real life. You might want to take a more careful look at his new book… ‘Rediscover the Saints.’ We just celebrated the great feast of the Holy Nativity of Jesus Christ…which we call Christmas (it is the English way of identifying the feast days of the Church…Christ Mass…celebrated with Mass…or Candle Mass or Can-dlemas on February 2 which is the Presentation of the Lord). The celebration includes several weeks of Masses and Holy Days… Feast of the Holy Family…which falls between Christmas and New Year’s…January 1, Mary the Mother of God…Epiphany…(sometimes we call it the Feast of the Visit of the Magi) on January 6 or on the nearest Sunday…and then ‘The Baptism of the Lord’ to close the season.

All of these together help us to see the magni-tude of what it means for Christ to take on our human flesh…The Incarnation…and what it means for our destiny and our salvation. Jesus has raised up our human flesh to share in His Di-vine Life. Jesus has revealed the mystery of the presence of the Kingdom of God…and the star led the Magi to offer gifts recognizing Jesus as Lord of all peoples of the earth. At the Baptism of Jesus, the heavens were opened and the Spirit descended upon Him in the form of a dove…and the Father’s voice was heard clearly identifying Jesus as His beloved Son. It is great that our Church liturgy stretches out this mystery for us to understand and celebrate it worthily. The Feast of the Holy Family gives us a slight pause in the celebration to reflect on the reali-ty of Jesus taking on our human condition. He was born of the Virgin Mary and the legal son of Joseph of the house of David. However, he was not immune from trials and hardships. Joseph responded with fidelity and trust when the angel of the Lord appeared in a dream told him to seek safety for his family in Egypt. Even at the beginning, there were political and religious threats against the life of Jesus. Nevertheless, God’s plan unfolded…so that after the immediate threat subsided…allowed Joseph to return to Galilee and settle safely in Nazareth. We can reflect on the circumstances of our own family life. We face so many challenges and those things and events that threaten our safety and well-being. We need to focus on a spirit of gratitude and thanksgiving for all that the bless-ings the Lord has given us. We need to seek the Lord’s direction and guidance in everything we do and all the decisions we make. Let the Lord lead and guide us through life…all the good and the bad that we might encounter. God bless all of our families…and every member with his Peace.

Around the Community

Amber is the daughter of our Music Director Nick Robinson and his wife Becky. During 22-year-old Amber Robinson’s senior year at col-lege at Northern Illinois Universi-ty, she knew she wanted to do missionary work but didn’t know where. Today, the Glen Carbon native, who attends Ss. Peter and Paul Parish in Collinsville, finds herself in St. Joseph, Mich., working directly with youth, challenging these vulner-able Catholics “to love Christ and embrace the life of the church.” “I had only been in Michigan for a couple weeks, but quickly met a young adult after Mass,” Robin-son said. “We met up for coffee, and I got to know her. By the end of the conversation, I could tell that she was wanting to go deeper. I invited her into a more intentional discipleship. So, we will be meeting with each other once a week, and I will be going through Scripture with her. I’m so excited to see what the Lord does in her life this year!” Robinson is hoping for more success stories like that as part of her nine-month journey with her NET Ministries (National Evangelization Team) discipleship team. Robinson’s team, which in-cludes other male and female young adults, is serving in a parish and school in St. Joseph, fo-cusing on helping with Confirmation classes, go-ing to school lunches to talk with students about Christ, meeting people for one-on-one spiritual discussions, and working with youth groups. “My campus minister served with NET over 20 years ago and it sounded amazing,” Robinson said. “I then thought back to when I served with Totus Tuus in the Diocese of Springfield in Illi-nois for two summers, and I saw what amazing work the Lord could do during the teen program and it got me excited to do more ministry work. I just want the youth to see the Lord’s love for them.”

Robinson plans on serving with NET for one year, but said, “We will see what the Lord has in store.” As for her advice on how Catholics can become intentional disciples and help others? She says that it first comes down to establishing a relationship with Jesus for ourselves. “If we don’t know who Jesus is in our hearts, we can’t go and give to other people,” Robinson said. “We can’t give what we don’t have. We need to encourage the youth to also get involved be-cause they are the church right

now. Young people often see themselves as the future of the church, but we need them to realize they are the church now. Being a disciple may look different for everyone, but Christ doesn’t call the qualified, he qualifies the called.” Reprinted from the Catholic Times

Celebrate Epiphany with your whole family by blessing your home. Chalk is available at the church doors and the following guidelines and prayers are provided to assist you. Materials: A piece of chalk and a small container of holy water. Gather with family at the front door. Leader: Sign of the Cross; Let us pray: May Christ bless this house. All: Amen. Then sign the doorway with four crosses and the numerals of the new year: 20 + C + M + B + 20 Leader: A reading from the Second Let-ter of Peter: We look forward to the new heavens and the new earth God has promised, a dwelling place of righteous-ness. The word of the Lord. All: Thanks be to God. Each room of the house is sprinkled with holy water. Living room: You are present where two or three are gathered. Bless this room, O Lord. All: Amen. Kitchen: Give us this day our daily bread. All: Amen. Dining Room: May we be seated at the heavenly banquet. Bless this room, O Lord. All: Amen. Bedrooms: Protect us, stay with us through the night. Bless this room, O Lord. All: Amen.

Bathroom: You cleanse us always from sin. Bless this room, O Lord. All: Amen. All return to the front door to pray togeth-er. Leader: Let us pray as Jesus taught us: Our Father… The leader sprinkles all present with holy water and concludes: Bless this house-hold through all days to come, Father, Son and Holy Spirit, forever and ever. All: Amen.
