When the Upland Brewing Co. Tasting Room opened in 2009, it was mainly a growler filling station. Since then, it has morphed into what the neighborhood demanded: a beer bar with a coffee shop feel, comfy chairs, free Wi-Fi, and an unmistakably Upland attitude. It offers patrons a place of respite featuring great beers and, oftentimes, live music. Serving pints, pitchers, flights and even kegs, the Upland Brewing

Tasting Room is for any beer drinker or Bloomington alumni. College and 49th, 4P – 10P Sunday through Thursday, 12P – 12A Friday and Saturday

The Indianapolis Zoo is located in White River State Park downtown. Since opening in 1964, it has grown into a world-class facility hosting a million visitors each year and playing a major role in worldwide conservation and research. With summer getting closer and the weather getting nicer, the animals at the Zoo are again embracing the sun and tolerating the “ohs” and “ahs” of onlookers (they are fully aware of how cool they are, the constant flattery is so banal). Treat your sweetie, pals, or yourself to a day full of fun and exploration, checking out each of the five amazing biomes at the Zoo—Encounters, Forests, Oceans, DeseDeserts and Plains. Admission: $15 online, $17 at the door. 9a-5p Mon-Thurs, 9a-7p Fri-Sun 2

Originally,Originally, scientists at Danesco, a company now part of DuPont, were on a mission to discover a better way to produce yogurt. However, they ran into a protein called Cas9 that may have much greater implications. The protein has the capability of cleaving DNA strands at precise locations within the sequence with greater efficiency and affordability. Moreover, the Cas9 can be paired with a small RNA sequence and cleave at the complementary DNA sequence. Researchers at many universities such as Harvard and new start-up companies such as Caribou Biosciences are hopeful that this newnew “editing-tool” will revolutionize the way we study genetics. George Church, of Harvard University, proposed that in the future one could induce pluripotent stem cells from a patient and use Cas9 to remove or reprogram gene segments associated with a disease afflicting the patient. http://www.forbes.com/sites/matthewherper/2013/03/19/the-protein-that-could-change-biotech-forever/

New research out of King’s College London details a new method to develop embryonic teeth primordia from one’s own gum cells. These small cell ‘pellets’ can be implanted and develop into “bioteeth.” These lab-grown bioteeth have natural root structure, something that dental implants lack. The researchers used epithelial cells derived from adult human gum tissue to direct the differentiation of mouse embryonic mesenchymal cells into the bioteeth. The challenge will be to do this with human adult mesenchymal cells. http://www.eurekalert.org/pub_releases/2013-03/kcl-btr030813.php

AA group of chronic pain researchers have found that DNA activity is reduced by 12% in the prefrontal cortex, an area of the brain not associated with processing pain. They separated a group of mice that both suffered from chronic pain into small, restricted cages living alone and a roomier cage with other mice. The mice in the roomier environment with mice cohorts were found to have restored DNA activity in the prefrontal cortex and a reversal of chronic pain. This is important because it suggests that chronic-pain is a biological phenomenon that can potentially be reversed. http://wwhttp://www.plosone.org/article/info%3Adoi%2F10.1371%2Fjournal.pone.0055259

Deer God, look at these two go at it. This 1:40 video captures the full glory of two deer taking a couple of jabs at each other.

No matter your political affiliation, I think we can all agree that going 2 for 22 is pretty dismal. Well at least we know he hasn’t been spending any time on the White House courts. (This video may be deleted soon, so check it out ASAP).

May want to check the physiology behind this, but brain freeze sure is real. Watch this unfortunate soul go a little too hard during a spring break brain freeze contest and take a hard fall.

Do you nd yourself walking in zig-zags trying to avoid the geese fecal remnants? It could be worse. We are blessed that we have not been air assaulted yet.
