There’s nothing young children like more than dressing up

to become a fairy or a pirate for the day.

But carnival outfits are expensive

A bright red basic outfit could become a lobster or a ladybug. Add big stuffed mittens to make claws and you’ve got a lobster! Attach black spots cut out of felt with Velcro or fabric glue and junior’s a ladybird!

Transform a green track suit into a grasshopper by adding paper or felt wings with safety pins. Create a turtle with a cardboard shell, painted and fastened with elastic straps.

A pink or purple outfit? You’re half way to a fairy princess. Just add inexpensive wings and a tiara. Don’t forget the wand! A ballet tutu adds to the costume. Haven’t got a tutu? Make one with a piece of cheap tulle or colorful netting.

after Christmas, finding extra money’s hard. So here are some ideas about making your toddler’s outfit at home. With a little ingenuity and some face paints, you can help them transform into their fantasy character.

Carnival CostumesYou can put a costume

together quite simply with clothes you have at home. Start

by dressing your child in a matching polo neck top

and leggings or trousers. This

Adding some face paints to the outfits can add the final touch and be fun, so

here are some easy tips and ideas for you. Firstly if you have never put face paint on your child it is very important to do

a skin test a few days before to make sure there is no allergic reaction. Do this by putting a little amount of the paint on the inside of your child’s

wrist and leave for at least 60 minutes to see if any reaction develops. Provided that there is no ill effect from using the paint on

your child’s wrist you are ready to begin. Buy water based face paints from a reputable manufacturer to make sure they are good quality. Lay out your face paints along with a good supply of water for washing brushes and sponges. You do not need to put any cream or moisturizer on your child’s skin before you begin. Water based face paint is best applied directly onto clean, dry skin. Always apply the base colour first, using a damp sponge. Make sure that the sponge is not too wet by squeezing out any excess water or the finished result may look streaky. If you want to get a deeper colour, allow the first coat to dry and then apply a second coat. If your chosen design has a variety of light and dark colours, always apply the lighter colour first, if possible. Add the detail with the paint brushes, the finer a brush you use, the more detail you can achieve. If it is your first time trying to face paint, begin with a simple design and if possible practice before Carnival day. Have a mirror at hand to show your child your progress each step of the way and make the whole event fun for you both! Outfit made and face painted, now your little angel is ready for a great fun day out for all the family at Carnival – just remember you will be on your feet all day so make sure you all wear some comfy footwear, your feet will thank you and have a wonderful time!

Once you get started, your imagination will take off. So get your children involved, too, discussing ideas, choosing materials, cutting and sticking and colouring and pinning. You’ll all have such fun as you teach them the value of being active creators rather than passive consumers. They’ll always remember the satisfaction of enjoying Carnival in costumes they helped create, costumes that, when they are older, they’ll look back on as symbols of family togetherness.

and Win! ingredients:• 1 tbsp extra virgin olive oil.• 2 boneless chicken breasts (or thighs diced into 1” pieces).• ½ small onion diced.• 2 cups of chicken broth (preferably home made).• 1 cup SMA Progress Kids Milk.• ½ package chopped spinach (thawed and drained).• ½ cup small whole wheat pasta like ditalini.• ¼ cup parmesan cheese (optional).

Method1. Heat the olive oil in a large pan on a medium to high heat.2. Add the chicken to the pot and sauté until thoroughly cooked

for about 8 mins.3. Remove chicken for pot and set aside.4. In the same pot add the onions and cook until translucent,

The food our children eat supplies the energy that they need to work, play and grow. We measure that energy in calories. The more they move, the more energy they use up and the more food they require, but it’s not that simple. The amount of food they need also depends on how big they are and how quickly they are growing.

Sometimes as mothers and especially grandmothers who might have memories of harder times, we can be concerned that

they are not eating enough to grow and stay healthy. It’s particularly hard with toddlers. They often seem too busy to sit down and eat properly, and so we worry. Aside from charting their progress in height and weight, how can we be sure that our child is getting enough calories?

The amount of energy from food a child aged between 1 and 4 needs does depend on their normal activity, some children run around all day and never seem to sit still, whilst others are quite happy to sit and draw pictures or do jigsaw puzzles and their normal activity not being much more than playing in the park or walking to and from kindergarten. A rough rule for a normal 2 – 3 year old would be around 1000 calories a day, whilst if the same aged child was a very active

toddler they could need around 1400 calories a day.

So when our children reach the age of 12 months and they start experiencing solid food,

parents may worry when they become picky and unwilling to try new tastes and we may struggle to provide the calories they need.
