Usually, it seems to the new parent, these early communications sound louder and happen in the middle of the night! At around the third month, babies start to coo and gurgle. These are sounds that indicate pleasure and show they are responding with delight to our interactions with them. This is the beginning of language development which keeps growing as they begin to recognise specific sound patterns and learn what they mean and represent long before they can actually use them. They know what a lot of words mean themselves.

“Do you want your teddy cup?” you smile, and you notice their eyes move to their special cup long before they can say the word.

Once communication starts, it keeps on developing at a steady pace. It is important to note that different children develop language at different rates. Just as some children learn to walk at different rates the same applies for the development of language. Don’t compare children. And don’t worry

unnecessarily. They will reach their milestones in their own time. They’ll probably end up talking so much they’ll make your head spin!

You can expect to hear children say their first words somewhere between 12 and 18 months. The words don’t have to be complete or real words. Sometimes these words are only meaningful to you. For example your baby may say ‘Ba’ for bottle and uses it consistently - that’s a word. Respond with a smile to show you understood, repeat the proper word to confirm they have successfully communicated as well as modelling the proper word. It’s very rewarding for them – their utterances will start proving powerful tools to get what they desire.

“Do you want your bottle?” you smile and they hear the word they are trying to say again. Between one to two years, language development should continue steadily with a gradual increase in the child’s ability to understand. They should be able to follow simple

commands and understand simple questions, they start appreciating more story-telling and songs. Their expressive skills also increase considerably as they try to label things around them and use many different sounds although they may still have some sounds which they cannot say. By the age of three they will have grown out of baby talk though they might hold on to some special words just within the family. They’ll know what a blanket is, but comfort ‘Blankie’ will stay “Blankie” The good news is that if you want to help your child’s language development, it couldn’t be easier. Talk to them and listen to

them. Every day situations offer rich opportunities for language stimulation and development - talk while doing things and going places. Have short pauses where the child can contribute to the interaction even with a sound or a word and then use that to build on to other things.

Use simple sentences and questions. Use Maltese and English separately. Try not to put in words in English in a phrase with Maltese construction or vice versa e.g. trid halib? or do you want milk? And not ‘Trid milk?’ Engage children in simple conversations and not interrogations. Comment about a picture and point things out while you encourage them to ask you back. Don’t do all the asking and they have to give all the answers. Remember children are very sensitive and the best way to learn language is in a relaxed nonthreatening situation and not as participants in a language ability quiz!

Be creative with simple everyday toys and create opportunities for

language use, follow the child’s lead and interests and talk about them.

You’ll be helping them to develop their vocabulary as well as their ability to focus on a task and develop their attention span – all skills that will help them later in life. Language is fun! Your baby and your toddler will love spending time having you all to themselves and will learn to associate language learning and pre-reading with pleasure.

Television can help language development only if it is included in a shared activity and part of being together, but not if the child is plonked in front of a TV set for hours on end and left on his own. Language grows in relationship and in doing. Watch television together. Cuddle up. Comment on what’s happening on the screen. Ask him questions.

“What’s Sarah doing now? Where’s she going? Is that an elephant? Look at his long nose! That’s his trunk. You haven’t got a trunk. What have you got? Yes, you’ve got a nose. What has daddy

got? Daddy would look silly with a trunk!”

Play-talk-and have fun. And do it together.

Language development is a natural process, some children may be slower than others. When should I worry? If your child does not respond to speech or sounds by 18 months do not ignore, if your child is not using any words or very few in your opinion – by 2 years – seek help. If you are worried, it’s worth seeking help from a speech language pathologist who is trained to assess your child and make recommendations. At times guidance and reassurance is enough to get your child on the right track. At others, children do require longer periods of therapy but it is never too early to get the necessary advice.

Talk to your baby and your toddler. Play with them. Comment on what they see, and what you are doing together, and before you know it, they develop into little chatterboxes!

Weaning babies is always a time when especially first-time parents might get confused. Breast feeding was an easy decision, but when your baby reaches the age of six months you know you have reached the time when they need to move on to the introduction of solid foods. During this transition, Breast milk is still an important element in your baby’s diet; but if one would like to opt for a formulae milk, SMA Follow-on Milk is a perfect complement to weaning as it provides the important nutrients your growing baby requires.

Follow-on Milk

cow’s milk is not recommended for babies under 12 months

Important Notice: SMA Follow-on Milk is suitable for babies over 6 months and is not intended to replace breastfeeding. It should only be used as part of a varied weaning diet. The decision to begin weaning, including any decision to start weaning before 6 months of age, should be made, only on advice of a doctor, midwife, health visitor, public health nurse, dietician or pharmacist, based on your baby’s specific growth and development needs. Good dental hygiene is as important for babies and toddlers as it is for children and adults. Prolonged or frequent contact of drinks or feeds with the teeth, e.g. from using bottles or beakers as comforters, increases the risk of tooth decay. Use a cup or a beaker by 6 months if possible, and in any case as soon as the first tooth appears. In accordance with normal dental hygiene, your baby’s teeth should be cleaned after the last feed at night. Ask your healthcare professional or dentist for advice. Never leave your baby alone during feeding.

When our babies were born they did much more than sleep, eat and dirty their nappy. As from the moment that they were born, they immediately responded

to mummies touch or to daddy’s voice and to the lights and sounds of toys and music.

Babies love to look at interesting things around them, and they can focus very well on a toy which has lights and music. Musical toys which are made for babies offer a calming effect when babies pass through fussy periods. Bright hanging toys also fascinate babies when in the cot or car seat. In addition, soft rubber and plastic rattles are great for babies to handle as they learn how to grasp objects.

It is important for us parents to play with our children. Children love toys but they can never replace our presence, so let’s use this precious time playing and communicating with our children! We must not see this as spoiling them, but meeting our babies’

needs. Our children/babies show their feelings with frowns and tears or with bright smiles and cuddles when they are happy. This is a good way to establish a close bond and give the best chance for a healthy and happy life.

At the age of one year, babies master walking and playtime takes on a whole new dimension. Language ability grows at an amazing pace at this time. The ability to understand words and phrases develops more quickly than the ability to talk. They love to make noise so get used to things being a little bit louder around the house.

At the age of two children become more assertive during playtime. They

pretend play and are out for fun and adventure.

It is therefore important to interect with our children and find teachable moments throughout the day by talking to them continuously. Furthermore, reading to our children on a daily basis will enhance language skills.

In this issue we are giving you a guide on the different toys that may be used with children at different age brackets. Feel free to call us should you require any further assistance or information.

A whole new world is opening up for our children and thanks to us they will not only grow physically but will eventually become self-confident and independent.

Happiness is the best gift to give to our children this Christmas...

...a gift that makes our children smile...

OUR FAVOUBonding with our baby is one of the most exciting moments in our life. This can be done through playing with our baby. Baby rattles and musical cot mobiles are good ways to stimulate the babies. The newborn baby begins to discover the environment that surrounds us. Toys such as cot mobiles, musical cot toys and soft toys are important to the baby’s growth, offering suitable stimuli in the development of the senses of sight, hearing and touch.

RITE TOYS...It is an exciting day when our baby discovers how to use his hands. At this age babies’ eyes learn how to work and make reaching and grasping possible. It is time to put away dangling earings for some time! Gradually the baby widens the field to explore the world, hones psychomotor skills and starts to complete more movements by grasping objects. ...MORE OF OURBy the age of 6 months our baby learns how to sit down, and once he masters this skill, he is eager to move towards crawling. Toys placed out of reach will motivate them to lunge forward and discover ways to rock and move along the floor. As the fine motor skills improve, babies start picking up small objects, so be sure to provide small toys that fit comfortably in baby’s hands. An assortment of these on the high chair tray will also keep the baby occupied for a while. Hiding games may also become great fun for babies. Lightweight foam balls are fun for rolling and gentle tossing with mum and dad. Some babies may also show readiness to stand and even begin walking. Walker toys that a baby can hold on to and push across the room are perfect for this age.

FAVOURITE TOYSToddlers love to climb on small slides or play structures, riding toys is also a new area. Toys they can push or pull are top of their favourite list. Stacking and nesting cups will keep toddlers busy. Playing with our babies may be the chance to point to and name all that there is to see around us. The older toddler will also begin to plan ahead and figure out shape sorting games. As imagination blossoms, they will begin to build towers and other projects. Water play, whether in the bath or outside with a bucket also becomes their favourite.

I am confident that no parent will argue if his child is given a puzzle. It is truly an educational toy for toddlers, preschoolers and also school-age children. A puzzle is considered to be more superior compared to most recently developed child educational toys. Its superiority lies in the fact that this puzzle offers a range of educational values for a minimum cost.

In order to see the benefits of children’s jigsaw puzzle, the important thing to consider when choosing a jigsaw puzzle is to choose the appropriate puzzle for the right age. The puzzle should be challenging but not too complex as it might frustrate the child.

Why should I choose a puzzle?

Children want us to take pleasure in them, play with them and also listen to them. Playing games is an easy and excellent way to spend unhurried, enjoyable time together. As an added bonus, board games are also rich in learning opportunities. So why not include a board game in their stocking or under a tree, this Christmas, and you can share these special moments together.

One thing I love the most about child building blocks is that they are so flexible to use. There is no right or wrong way in using them. Children can use these toys according to their imagination. They can use them in whatever ways they want. So, not only these toys are fun, they will also dramatically increase your child’s creativity and imagination.

Toy building blocks can be used at different levels, which means that these toys will see many uses before your child outgrows them. Baby, toddler, and older child - all use child building blocks. Building Blocks are durable, and make them one of the toys which offer best value for money.

There are plenty of benefits why you should choose building blocks this Christmas, here are some of them: • Increasehand-eyecoordination.• Enhancelogicthinkingcapability.• Enhancecapabilityinspatialawareness.• Improvesocialcapabilitybybuilding‘something’

Body temperature can be physiologically lower or higher after eating hot or cold substances, after running, after a bath, after moving from a warm to a cold environment, or after prolonged crying. In these cases, the values indicated are not reliable. So ensure that temperature measurement is taken at least 20 minutes after such activity. The temperature can be taken using different methods and different instruments (digital or infrared thermometers).

When measuring temperature always keep in mind, that human body temperature is 36,5-37,5°C. If the increase reaches 38°C or more, then your child is running a fever.

MEASURING YOUR BABY’S TEMPERATuREMeasuring your baby’s body temperature when experiencing fever is a challenge for parents. We are hereby giving you some tips on how to measure your baby’s body temperature correctly.

Underarm MeasuringThis is the most recommended method for children, even infants. Use a digital thermometer and keep in mind that an under arm temperature is around 1°C lower than one taken in the mouth, rectum, or ear. This is because the thermometer is not inside the body suchasunderthetongue.Ensurethatthe skin under the armpit is thoroughly dry and keep the child still whilst taking the measurement.

Rectal measurementThis can be a bit annoying and therefore should be used only in cases where it is difficult to keep the child still whilst taking the underarm temperature. Use a digital thermometer with a flexible rod. Lubricate the tip with Vaseline or olive oil. Whilst taking the temperature, try to hold the child still and do not lay him on his back. The result may not be reliable in the presence of diarrhoea or anal inflammation. The rectal temperature is on average half a degree higher than the underarm readings.

Measurements on the forehead with an infrared thermometerThis instrument must be used properly in order to get reliable results. Allow the temperature on the thermometer to adapt to the environment where the child is for about 20-25 minutes. If the child comes from an environment with a different temperature, wait at least 5 minutes before taking the measurement. Compare the reading with the child’s normal temperature, measured with the same instrument in order to understand the magnitude of the difference.

Ear measurementsIt requires good practice to get a correct reading using this method. Usage of an infrared thermometer is recommended. The sensor must be directed exactly on the eardrum: this means it is necessary to “stretch” the pavilion of the ear.

Crying is a means of communication used by babies in order to gain the attention of the parents in particular when they are uncomfortable. Most cases, about 95%, have no medical problem and usually the majority improve by 3 to 4 months.

Colic is a term frequently used to describe repeated episodes of excessive crying in a baby that is otherwise healthy. The crying occurs for 3 or more hours per day for 3 or more days per week for 3 weeks.

The causes of crying can be divided in two; mainly crying secondary to a medical problem and crying secondary to some type of discomfort.

Medical problems may vary from heart to lung conditions and intestinal

conditions. Crying can occur as a consequence of infection or trauma, or other various causes such as drugs or vaccine reactions.

However, the most common causes of crying usually are hunger, dirty diapers, lack of attention, need for sleep, the baby being too hot or too cold or teething problems.

Once concern builds up, Parents often decide to get a medical opinion and when at the family doctor, he or she will take a detailed history about the crying problem. The doctor will ask how long the crying has been occurring and at what time of the day, how long does the crying take to stop and if there are any associated features such as drawing up of the legs, a violet tinge to the mouth and fingers, or if there are any rashes. He or she will ask about the feeding pattern of the infant, the way the milk is being reconstituted and the way that it is being given to the child. Information about any allergies is picked up at this point.

The doctor will ask about the health during pregnancy and any

complications that might have been associated with the labour as well as probe the parents’ feelings about the whole situation in order to have their opinion on the matter.

The family doctor will proceed in checking the baby from head to toe paying particular attention to what are medically known as ‘red flags’, which are factors found during the baby’s physical examination that would point out an underlying serious problem that would require immediate attention. After the examination, the family doctor will discuss his findings with the parents in order to set up an action plan that would include the management of the crying baby.

In case a medical problem is picked up, then a referral to secondary care would be the best way forward. Here the family doctor will explain the need for referral, the urgency required and what to expect as well as provide support by being a reference point for the parents as the need arises.

In the management of the crying baby, simple measures are usually sufficient and include holding, rocking and patting gently the infant, utilising soft music, an infant swing, giving the baby a warm bath or simply

prolonged. Ideally feeding should take at least 15 minutes, stopping the feed if the baby is rushing through in order to give the infant time to burp. It would be best if the baby is fed upright. As regards breastfeeding, some sources advise mothers to avoidance spicy food, caffeine and citrus foods that might lead to a more agitated infant.

In some cases a pharmacological treatment, usually in the form of oral drops, is given for 1 week and improvement monitored. Treatment, if successful, can be given at most for up to 6 months and then weaned off. In a lesser proportion of babies, where an allergy is suspected, a 1 week trial of cow’s milk protein exclusion from the diet might be advised. Referral at this point would be advisable in particular if the parents feel that they are unable to cope with the situation, there is doubt upon the initial diagnosis or if treatment was commenced but it is impossible to stop it because of symptom recurrence.

Based upon the above, it would be a good idea for parents facing such a problem to keep a diary, noting down the occurrences of the crying episodes, how long they last, any associated things that the parents might have noticed and any attempts at consolation jotting down whether these have been successful or not.

One must stress the point that at times it is a good thing for parents to ‘get a break’ in that they can allow sometime for themselves to rest and calm down. A nervous parent is more likely to result in an anxious baby and thus more crying. A crying child does not mean bad parenting and these feelings can be allayed through discussion with the family doctor or support groups available.

Good luck and enjoy your baby.

going out for a walk or a drive by car. The above measures help to calm the baby down and diminish the crying.

The doctor might give advice on various feeding techniques that may help reduce colic. A fast feed is

associated with colic thus it is advisable that the baby is not

allowed to cry excessively before offering the feed

it’s the season to socialise…We all know that this time of year is time for parties and going out. The biggest worry for most mothers is what they’re going to feed their baby. Even though we go out our babies still need to eat healthy and proper food. It is very important that you avoid giving your baby party foods especially if s/he is still under 18 months. The main reason one should avoid giving such foods is that they normally contain high levels of additives, preservatives and salts; which are not suitable for babies of such a young age.

Plasmon offers you a very practical solution to this problem – The Plasmon Pappa Completa range. This range offers you ready meals with either Ham, Beef or Veal, together with vegetables & pasta. Made from the finest ingredients, these meals do not contain any colorants and preservatives.

Bebithe is a range of Iced-Tea specifically designed for young children (12 months+) prepared from hand picked tea leaves, harvested in the finest orchards away from any source of pollution. Like any other Plamson product, the Bebithe range does not have any colourants and preservatives added to it…it is just filled with natural goodness!

One can find two varieties of Bebithe – Lemon & Peach, in convenient to carry around 180ml plastic bottles. Best served chilled and once opened it is important to place in the refrigerator and consume within 24 hours.
