DERMATOLOGICAL

Care products recognised by the skin

Since it was founded, BIODERMA has devoted a large part of its research to understanding the skin's natural and original functioning. The aim: to reproduce it.

“Teaching the skin to live according to its natural biology”

NATURAL MECHANISMS, ABSOLUTE MODELS

When the skin suffers from external attacks, medical treatments or cutaneous ageing, rather than treat it, BIODERMA designs biomimetic* molecules and processes that boost its natural and biological mechanisms.

ACTIVE INGREDIENTS 100% APPROVED BY THE SKIN, 100% SAFE

BIODERMA's care products tend to avoid chemical substances foreign to the skin, with 100% biomimetic*, pure and natural active ingredients that respect the skin's physiology. Used at appropriate doses for optimal efficacy, they are tolerated by even the most sensitive skin.

A DERMO-PAEDIATRIC INNOVATIONFROM BIODERMA'S RESEARCH LABS ABCDerm, a range of baby products, enjoying an exclusive dermatological safety charter.

High safety• Formulated without paraben**, without phenoxyethanol, without artificial colouring or essential oils, without chlorphenesin, without MIT-MCIT, BHA or BHT, without chlorhexidine, without phthalate.

Right efficacy • The ABCDerm care products are made from the purest dermatological active ingredients, at optimal doses.

Perfect tolerance • To limit risks, the products contain only ingredients that are strictly necessary and whose roles are clearly defined.

A good pregnancy diet is one which is well-balanced and which addresses the baby’s

specific needs. Omega 3 rich foods are particularly essential. Omega 3 foods can provide the baby with the energy and materials necessary for physical and mental growth. Omega 3s are also important for the mothers health and well-being during pregnancy.

What are Omega 3s? Omega 3s are a type of polyunsaturated fatty acids. They are found in various foods, including fish, seeds, and plants. Omega 3 fatty acids are often referred to as essential fatty acids. This is because they cannot be produced by the body, but instead need to be taken through essential foods.

Types of Omega 3s There are three main types of

Omega 3 essential fatty acids. The body can use all three of these Omega 3s to help perform different functions.

Eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA): EPA is found primarily in fish and fish oil.

Docosahexanoic Acid (DHA): DHA is especially important to the body, and is also found primarily in fish.

Alpha-Linolenic Acid (ALA): ALA is found mostly in seeds, vegetable oils, and leafy green vegetables. It is converted into EPA and then into DHA in the body.

Omega 3 During PregnancyIt is only recently that the

importance of Omega 3 during pregnancy has been acknowledged. It is now known that Omega 3 actually plays a large role in the development and growth of the baby when it is in the uterus. Omega 3 helps to build the brain, form the retinas and the

development of the nervous system.Omega 3 is also necessary for

the mothers health and well being during the pregnancy. Omega 3 helps to reduce the chances of developing pre eclampsia, reduce the risk for postpartum depression and minimizes the chance of preterm labor.

Omega 3 Deficiency During Pregnancy

Having an Omega 3 deficiency while one is pregnant can prove very harmful to the mother as well as to the baby. The baby takes Omega 3 from the foods the mother eats. The nutrients cross the placenta, helping the baby to grow and develop. However, if the baby does not get enough Omega-3 from the food the mother eats, he will begin to take it from his own stores. Researchers believe that these stores may be located in the brain, which can result in a loss of up to 3% of the brain cells. Omega 3 deficiency during pregnancy is linked with increased rates of postpartum depression, increased chances of having a low birth weight baby and increased chances of preterm labor or cesarian birth

The Future Benefits of Omega 3Taking Omega 3 during pregnancy

has also been proven to help the mother and her baby in the long run. Recent studies were performed on infants who were exposed to adequate levels of Omega 3 while in the womb. These babies showed advanced attention spans and greater visual acuity than non-exposed children. Their development was also two months ahead of non-exposed children. Other Omega 3 benefits include less chance of developmental or behavioral

problems later on and less incidence of breast and prostate cancer

When To Take Omega 3sDuring pregnancy, it is

recommended that one gets at least 250 mg of Omega 3 every day. However, Omega 3 oils are especially important during the final trimester. It is during this time that the baby uses Omega-3 to form approximately 70% of the brain system.

Good Omega 3 SourcesOmega 3 is best found in fish and

fish oil products. High levels of Omega 3 are found in oily fish (mackerel, herring, sardines, anchovies and salmon), Omega 3 fish oil supplements and fresh or frozen tuna

Omega-3 supplements are available in most pharmacies.

Omega 3 Rich Foods & PregnancyWe all know how important a good diet is in maintaining a healthy pregnancy. After all the baby relies on the mother for vitamins, nutrients, and calories he needs throughout his development.

Centrum Pregnancy Care Plus, which can be taken during pregnancy and breastfeeding contains a daily dose of Centrum Pregnancy Care ( a multivitamin with folic acid, iron, calcium and iodine) plus an Omega 3 capsule.

Spring and summer periods can be a lot of fun for children and let’s admit it even for the

accompanying adult. The beautiful weather we are blessed with is perfect for outside activities ranging from games to walks, days by the sea even simply playing in the veranda backyard or garden. Surely these are memories one will treasure when later on in life.

So that these beautiful memories are not tarnished by unpleasant incidents, precaution is advised with regards to dehydration since temperatures can go quite high both due to the atmosphere as well as due to the child’s behaviour especially if he/she is performing physical activity. Water constitutes approximately 70% of body weight in infants and 65% in children. Very important salts like sodium potassium and chlorine are dissolved in water in a very delicate balance that is vey important for the body’s normal function.

The human body has various compensatory mechanisms for regulating body heat namely by conduction, convection, radiation, and evaporation. Evaporation through sweating is very relevant since it might lead to dehydration.

Sweat is made up of water and salts of sodium, chloride, and potassium. In our brain we have a sensor which senses an increase in temperature and responds by increasing blood flow to the skin,

stimulating the sweat glands. The result is an increase in the rate of water lost through sweating which may lead to dehydration.

During low- to moderate-intensity exercise of less than one hour, there are minimal salt losses because the body reabsorbs most of the salts from the sweat. However, during moderate- to high-intensity exercise of greater than one hour, the salt loss in sweat becomes significant and the sweat rate is too fast for re-absorption of salts. One should also watch out that water loss occurs even when one is in an airconditioned environment. The air conditioner is a dehumidifier therefore it increases water loss through evaporation even though one does not get sweaty like an afternoon out in the sun. Water loss occurs also while swimming so one should also be on the lookout.

In dehydrated children the skin is grayish, mucous membranes dry; the urine production and release is reduced and appears darker, crying with no tears; large fontanel sinks down, respiratory and heart rates are high. In addition, the child might look sluggish and sick for a long time. Healthy baby urinates 6-8 times a

day, discharges the intestine 2-3 times a day. Based on the norms, you can monitor the water balance in the baby’s body.

Call pediatrician if:• Babydoesnoturinatefor6-8hours• Vomitingcontinuesfor12hours• Liquidstoolatleast8timesin8

The pediatrician is likely to recommend electrolyte sachets. The child is given to drink such solution in small doses, but frequent. Such preparations can also be taken preventively once daily. A specific preparation with WHO recommended doses is available for children.
