• A formal agreement between two or more nations to cooperate for specific purposes.

• There were 2 alliances in Europe before WWI- Triple Alliance and Triple Entente

• A situation in which neither side can gain a clear advantage.

• Trench warfare, the machine gun, and landmines created a stalemate on the Western Front

• The act of weakening or exhausting by constant harassment, abuse, or attack

• France vs. Germany- each tried to kill enough of the enemy and destroy enough of their equipment that the other couldn't afford to keep fighting.
