Jennifer Hundtofte of Council Bluffs recently lost her husband, Karl, from a four-year battle with brain cancer, leaving 3 small children behind. Earlier this year, Jennifer & Karl made their ‘bucket list’ and on Jennifer’s list was the ‘Million Dollar March’ to raise $ million, person at a time, $ at a time to fund brain cancer research. If you could find it in your heart to donate just $, Jennifer’s dream of hitting that $ million mark will be one step closer to being accomplished. Donations can be sent to:

This year, AJ’s Alley celebrates 5 years in business and five years as an Authorized Motor Vehicle Dealer in Crescent. Ardon J. Adamson, known as “AJ,” personally drives and inspects each vehicle to make sure it is in perfect shape before it is put on the lot for sale. AJ specializes in bank repossessions and “off-lease” cars. These low-mileage, late model cars have factory warranties that transfer with the car at no extra charge. AJ’s Alley also buys and sells collector, antique and custom cars. If you want to sell or buy a unique vehicle, stop in and see AJ for a special deal. AJ’s Alley is a small local dealership with very low overhead so the savings are passed to the consumer. No twenty million dollar show room, large payroll or enormous utility bills at this dealership. Take advantage of the prices on these units and save thousands from new car prices. Every deal is done personally with AJ, so you will never get the “run-around” when you need service. Business hours 7:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., Monday through Friday, AJ can be contacted at 72-545-3763 for a special showing at any time convenient to you. Stop in and test drive a new car today.

What’s Up at CECC?SubmittedbyLindaBrewer

We’ll start with a couple of summer announcements. Story time with one of the C.B. library librarians will be offered at :00 on Tuesday’s in June and July. All area kids are invited to take advantage of this program. Crescent is the only location outside of Council Bluffs where this is offered. Also, we have mentioned in previous columns that we applied for a grant from Promise Partners for the enrichment classes in Crescent this summer. We did not get the grant, so we will not be able to offer those classes this summer. We are, of course, disappointed . But we certainly would be delighted to hear from any person or group who would be willing to give a class for free! By the time this newsletter is published, the school year will be over. As of this writing, we are winding down the year. At the end of April, we held our annual open house and picnic. The weather actually allowed us to have it outside for a change! We had tables for parents and kids to make musical instruments like rain sticks, kazoos and bug buzzers. We had a karaoke machine for performances and hoped we’d get some spontaneous bands going. The kids loved it, but the grown-ups were more reluctant to show off their talents. We thank Nick Collins for loaning us his karaoke machine and board members for providing desserts for the picnic. During the observance of Week of the Young Child, we had pajama day. All the preschoolers wore pajamas and slippers, which they love to do, and we read The Napping House and sang lullabies. On a day off from school, close to Earth Day, we all went up to the cemetery and picked up litter. There was a lot to be picked up! We got some of the older kids interested in looking at the very old grave stones. There is a lot of local history to be seen there, and we urge you to make a visit even if it isn’t your “family cemetery”. But don’t leave any liter behind! At Easter time, we dyed real eggs, filled plastic ones with candy and had our own Easter egg hunt. The weather kept it short, but everyone managed to find a basket full of goodies. We thank Alex and Ethan Brewer who organized and supervised the hunt. At the end of May, we held our preschool program for families. The kids choose songs and finger plays to perform, and this year, we put on a play; Tell the Truth B.B. Wolf! We thank the church for allowing us to use the sanctuary for the program. We also recognize our “graduates”. This year the majority of our class is moving on to “big school”. So we say “good luck” to Luke, Nicholas, Maddy, Summer, Zach, Kaden, Zoeie, Ella, Luciana and Chresten. We will miss you! Some will be at the center this summer, and many will be back in the fall for before and after care. But it won’t be the same. They will be kindergarteners and think they have outgrown us. We hope we prepared them well. If you need summer care for a child, give us a call, e-mail or stop by for more information. We have a full schedule planned, including special sports and dance classes. We are also taking enrollments for the fall preschool class which begins Sept. 6.

Name something you’ve done once but would never do again.

Question of the Month?Sandra L. Rowe: I would never run the

New York Marathon again!!!!!ThomasShea,Sr.: Join the Army! I loved

the experience and there were a lot of things that gave me terrific memories, but would not want to do it again.

CindyShea: Crash in a Hot Air Balloon:}kadenOgle(5): Slide out of a tree on my

bare skin! Val Jacobsen: Ride 600 miles on a

motorcycle in the rain/hail when it is only 42 degrees.

Duane Dewaele: Great question but to embarrassing!!!

CliffDilts: Lie to mom.EmilyAlexander: I’d never go camping on

a rainy weekend! We got stuck in the mud, and had to push three cars and two trucks up a hill to get out of our camping spot!! It was beautiful and secluded, but no fun when we woke up the final morning to all that rain and mud!

StaciPettit: Eat Brussels SproutsDiane Stolz: Snow ski!!!! It was way

too much work when I fell down and couldn’t get up.

ZachHoffman(5): Be mean to my sister

GeorgiaMetzger: Climbed to the top of Diamond Head in Hawaii, this included climbing up 00 narrow rock stairs, walking through a completely pitch black tunnel, crawling out the bunker and seeing a breathtaking view of ocean and island, and recieved my certificate that I survived the climb. For anyone traveling to Hawaii I would highly recommend the adventure.

ColbyThurman(10): Ramp my bike up a huge ramp I made!

TedPruitt: For our honeymoon I took my wife down to Kansas city worlds of fun, and got on the biggest rollercoaster I could find. You know that one that goes upside down with loopdy-loops, and is a mile high in the sky. Well, when we got off, my new bride was as white as a sheet. It really scared me. I truly will never do that again!!

The Stamp Out Hunger food drive was very successful. It was cold out, but the turnout was great. We gave out free hot dogs & chips, while people stopped by and donated bags of food and money. Everyone who donated had their name entered into our drawing and we gave out some great prizes. Thanks to the huge efforts of our local mail carriers, the support of the community, and the donations from the American Veterans Motorcycle Club of Nebraska, we were able to collect over 600 pounds of food and $303.50 in cash donations. THANK YOU to all that helped make this possible: All of our awesome Mail Carriers, Denny’s Place, Henry’s Diner, Loess Hills Winery, Crescent Storage, U-Stop, Sharron Bourke, Keif’s Full Throttle, Meyer Automotive, Crescent Connection, C & A Scales, and all of you who spread the word and/or donated.

Food Drive A Success! If you haven’t been through it yourself you most likely know someone who has. In some way or another it seems to touch everyone. This poem was submitted by one of our readers who lost their spouse to cancer.

I Have Cancer...I have cancer but cancer does not have me.

Cancer is not who I am.It’s only a bend in the road that is my life’s journey...

An unexpected detour on my path.It is a lesson in the cosmic school room

that is human existence. So I will pause to rest and heal.

And study the lesson. Before I move on to my life beyond cancer.

I will not give into fear, And I will not be discouraged

to review the lesson.I will not be ashamed of my scars.

My scars are brush strokes in the masterpiece that is my life.

People I never would have known, Love that I had never been still or quiet enough to witness, humility I needed,

strength I thought I had lost, courage I never knew I had.

I will remember that I can still have fun and that it’s okay—even healthy

to be silly. I will remember that to find the joy in rainbows I must endure the rain.

And I will remember always that while I may have cancer, cancer does not have me.

benefits of the use of disinfectants to control microbial contaminants. Treatment Technique (TT) – A require process intended to reduce the level of a contaminant in drinking water.

SOURCE WATER ASSESSMENT INFORMATION The City of Crescent water supply obtains its water from the Council Bluffs Water Works. The City of Council Bluffs obtains its water from the Missouri River and its tributaries. Reservoirs and streams are highly susceptible to contamination because contaminants can move through them quickly. Council Bluffs’ water supply will be susceptible to contaminant releases from landfills and livestock confinements. A portion of the Council Bluffs’ water supply is obtained from an alluvial aquifer. The alluvial aquifer was determined to be highly susceptible to contamination because the characteristics of the aquifer and overlying materials allow contaminants to move through the aquifer quickly. The City of Council Bluffs’ wells will be most susceptible to activities such as dry cleaners, gas stations, industrial sites, and municipal wastewater discharges. A detailed evaluation of your source water was completed by the Iowa Department of Natural Resources, and is available from John Meads, Purification Manager at 328-1006 ext. 1019. GENERAL INFORMATION Drinking water, including bottled water, may reasonably be expected to contain at least small amounts of some contaminants. The presence of contaminants does not necessarily indicate that water posed a health risk. More information about contaminants or potential health effects can be obtained by calling the Environmental Protection Agency’s Safe Drinking Water Hotline (800-426-4791).

Some people may be more vulnerable to contaminants in drinking water than the general population. Council Bluffs Water Works constantly monitor the water supply for various contaminants, including cryptosporidium. Cryptosporidium, a protozoan parasite and one-celled animal, is too small to be seen without a microscope. It is common in surface waters (lakes and rivers), especially when these waters contain sewage or animal waste. Cryptosporidium has been detected in 2 out of 12 monthly samples in our source water.

Cryptosporidium was not detected in any drinking water samples. However, we believe it is important for you to know that cryptosporidum may cause serious illness in immuno-compromised persons such as persons with cancer undergoing chemotherapy, persons who have undergone organ transplants, people with HIV/AIDS or other immune system disorders. These people should seek advice from their health care providers. Our treatment processes consistently produces a low turbidity finished water, which is very effective in removing cryptosporidium. Cryptosporidium can be spread through means other than drinking water.

If present, elevated levels of lead can cause serious health problems, especially for pregnant women and young children. Lead in drinking water is primarily from materials and components associated with service lines and home plumbing. The Council Bluffs Water Works is responsible for providing high quality drinking water, but cannot control the variety of materials used in plumbing components. When your water has been sitting for several hours, you can minimize the potential for lead exposure by flushing your tap for 30 seconds to 2 minutes before using water for drinking or cooking. If you are concerned about lead in your water, you may wish to have your water tested. Information on lead in drinking water, testing methods, and steps you can take to minimize exposure is available from the Safe Drinking Water Hotline or at http://www.epa.gov/safewater/lead.

Our water utility is making every effort to protect the water system from potential security threats. You, as customers, can also help. If you see any suspicious activity near the water tower, treatment plant or fire hydrants, please contact us at 1-888-527-9853 or the local sheriff department. We appreciate your assistance in protecting the water system. CONTAMINANT VIOLATIONS Total Coliform. Coliforms are bacteria which are naturally present in the environment and are used as an indicator that other, potentially-harmful bacteria may be present. Coliforms were found in more samples than allowed and this was a warning of potential problems. The problem was found to be due to the use of the outside faucet for sample collection. No problems were found inside that residence or other sites. CONTACT INFORMATION For questions regarding this information or a copy of this report please contact: Tim Snyder with PeopleService at 402/344-4800 ext. 22 during the following hours: 9:00 a.m.-4:00 p.m. or e-mail at [email protected]. Decisions regarding the water system are made at the City Council meetings held on the first Monday of the month at 7:00 p.m. at City Hall and are open to the public.

School’sOut!...Since we had a few snow days to deal with this winter, school was extended until May 27th. The students celebrated the end of the year with various fieldtrips, a talent show, and a Field Day. Our 5th graders and Kindergarteners both were honored with graduation ceremonies. Help Us Collect!...We continue to collect Box Tops and Labels for Education (Campbell’s soup labels) year-round. We have been able to purchase many supplies for our classrooms and sponsor events for our student body with the money raised from these collections. There is a collection box located in the Peoples Bank lobby in Crescent. During school months, these collections can also be dropped off at the school. Thank you in advance for your help with these collections! Hy-Vee and Super Saver receipts start back up again September st.

Vets’ Monument Close to Completion That’s right! They’re nearing the end of their punch list. Committee members along with help from Elvis Jacobsen, Henry Kraft and John Erixon, spent several evenings at the park working on the final to-do’s. They assembled the tables and benches, pulled weeds, spread mulch and picked up construction debri. Their goal was to have the park spruced up in time for Memorial weekend. ‘What’s left’ you ask? Just a few finishing touches such as adding a copula and/or weather vane to the top of the shelter along with a few pieces of metal to the roof and an electrical outlet under the shelter. There are also several more plaques in the works which will be added to the wall within a couple weeks. The committee feels so fortunate to have had the amount of volunteer help they’ve had during the construction of the park. Most recently they’d like to give another big thank you to Tom Liston of Liston Construction. You may remember him from last

fall. Tom has volunteered several hours before last winter and again this spring. He’s done a wonderful job finishing the construction of the roof and laying the metal. Thank you Tom for all your help! It’s greatly appreciated! Another thank you goes to Chad Savoy of Minnesota (son of member, Deb Kraft) and Henry Kraft for coming in at short notice to brace up the shelter. They did a beautiful job!

Engagement and wedding rings are worn on the fourth finger of the left hand because it was once thought that a vein in that finger led directly to the heart.

If a family had two or fewer servants in the United States in 900, census takers recorded the family as lower middle class.

One o f h i s t o r y ’ s e a r l i e s t engagement rings was given to Princess Mary, daughter of Henry VIII. She was two years old at the time.

In many cultures around the world -- including Celtic, Hindu and Egyptian weddings -- the hands of a bride and groom are literally tied together to demonstrate the couple’s commitment to each other and their new bond as a married couple (giving us the popular phrase “tying the knot”).
