Traces of a cousin of vitaminB3, found in milk, producesstartling health benefits such

as keeping you slim inspite of a fattydiet and lazy lifestyle, a study says.

The findings reveal that highdoses of nicotinamide riboside (NR) acousin of niacin prevent obesity inmice that are fed a fatty diet, and also

increase muscle performance, improve energy expenditure and pre-vent diabetes development, all without side-effects.The Swissresearchers, led by Johan Auwerx, from the Polytechnic School inLausanne, performed the mouse experiments, while the ability to give

the animals sufficient doses of NR was made possible by Weill CornellMedical College researchers, who played key roles in

uncovering the biological story of NR, the journal CellMetabolism reported."This study is very important. Itshows that in animals, the use of NR offers the healthbenefits of a low-calorie diet and exercise without doingeither," said Anthony Sauve, associate professor of phar-macology at Weill Cornell Medical College.

Sauve is the pharmacologist and organic chemist whohas invented a simple method for efficiently synthesizing

NR on a large scale. He was first to show that NR increases nicotinamide ade-

nine dinucleotide (NAD) levels in mammalian cells, accord-ing to a university statement.

NAD is a central player in energy metabolism. Sauve haspioneered research into the compound, and he is a leader ininvestigating how NAD can signal adaptation in cells and inphysiology.

"The research also suggests that the effects of NR couldbe even broader," Sauve says. "The bottom line is that NRimproves the function of mitochondria, the cell's energyfactories. Mitochondrial decline is the hallmark of manydiseases associated with aging, such as cancer and neu-rodegeneration, and NR supplementation boosts mito-chondrial functioning."The Swiss researchers call NR a"hidden vitamin" that is believed to also be present inmany other foods, although levels are low and difficult tomeasure. Nevertheless, the effects of NR on metabolism

"are nothing short of astonishing."

Most people care about looking good on social networks like Facebook than seeming intel-ligent, according to a new survey.A survey by an American multinational company lookedat social media habits and found that looking as good as possible on Facebook profile

pages is the main priority of 56 per cent people.More than half Britons admitted they want to be more like their 'social media personas' than their

real selves.Women carefully hand-pick flattering pictures of themselves to post, while men craft their person-

alities around intelligence and courageous behaviour.Social media users from the Middle East andthe rest of Europe were far more concerned about appearing intelligent when posting online.

Sixty-one per cent of people from these regions said they wanted to seem intellectual when shar-ing content and views across social media, the survey said.

The most common reason for indulging in such 'social lies' was finding love or friendship, givenby 51 per cent of women and 40 per cent of men.

Impressing other people and covering up insecurities also rated highly as reasons, but nearly half(48 per cent) believe posts that are 'just too good to be true' generally are, the survey by Intel found.

Ninety-one per cent agreed that there are some topics which have no place on social websites.Eighty-five per cent also felt that people share information that's better left unsaid, while over 70 percent have felt uncomfortable about friends' posts about them.

utility stocks dropped after the CAG found irregu-larities in the government's coal allocation andusage. ITC rose 1.7 percent recovering from its3.5 percent fall in the previous session. ReliancePower fell more than 5.8 percent on Friday afterthe country's federal auditor said the companyunduly benefited from a government decisionallowing the power producer to use surplus coalfrom its captive block for another project it was notmeant for.

NEW DELHI: The government's decision to allow Reliance Power Ltd to divert surplus coal from cap-tive mines of its Sasan power project to another group plant will lead to a windfall gain of Rs 29,000crore over 20 years to the Anil Ambani group firm, the government auditor has said. The Comptrollerand Auditor General's report on 'Ultra Mega Power Projects Under Special Purpose Vehicles' tabled inParliament on Friday has held the UPA-ruled Centre and the BJP-led Madhya Pradesh governmentequally responsible for extending this largesse. "The permission to use surplus coal in other projectsof the bidder after award of the contract, based on acceptance of the lowest tariff, vitiated the sanctityof the bidding process which would result in post-bid concessions to the developer having significantfinancial implication," the report said.

Madrid: Records promise to tumble againin the 2012-13 La Liga season as worldpowerhouses Real Madrid and

Barcelona resume their duel for supremacy, threatening to cast Spain's other 18 clubs evenfurther adrift. Jose Mourinho's Real had to smashleague points and goal-scoring tallies to endarch-rivals Barca's three-year hold on La Ligalast May, driven to exceptional heights by theirrivalry with one of the greatest club teams of alltime. Barca have a change of face at the helm forthe new campaign with the untested TitoVilanova having big shoes to fill as PepGuardiola's replacement, but after four years asassistant he brings a strong thread of continuitywith him."This duel of titans forces the clubs andthe players to become better," Mourinho, whoseside start out at home to Valencia on Sunday, told Portuguese television this week. "The twoclubs are fighting for world football hegemony."Spanish football is basking in glory after thenational team completed an unprecedented tre-ble by winning Euro 2012 in July, having alsoscooped the 2010 World Cup and Euro2008.Real and Barca supplied 11 of the 13 play-ers who featured in Spain's 4-0 rout of Italy in lastmonth's final in Kiev and with Portugal's CristianoRonaldo and Argentina's Lionel Messi added tothe equation, their firepower is increased further.GOAL-SCORING DUELAs with the club rivalry, the goal-scoring duelbetween Ronaldo and Messi appears to spurthem to ever greater heights, and ArgentineWorld Player of the Year amassed 50 league

goals last season, to better Ronaldo's previousrecord of 40.Real are closing on TottenhamHotspur's Croatian playmaker Luka Modric tostrengthen their midfield, otherwise their relative-ly young squad has remained largelyunchanged.Barca, who host Real Sociedad onSunday (1900), have added explosive Spain fullback Jordi Alba to their ranks for 14 million euros, and are seeking another defensive reinforce-ment before the end of the month.Vilanova willneed to nurture ageing stalwarts Carles Puyol(34) and Xavi (32), while hoping David Villa hasnot lost any of his sharpness after recoveringfrom a broken leg which kept him sidelined for alarge part of last season. The strength of Realand Barca, the world's two richest clubs byincome according to Deloitte's annual survey, and the success of the Spanish internationalteam, contrasts sharply with the parlous state ofthe rest of the La Liga.Last year, the players wenton strike to delay the start of La Liga over unpaidwages and this season's competition was almostput back because of a dispute with broadcastersover television rights which is still unresolved.TV REVENUESOne of the key income streams that allows Realand Barca to continue to pull away from the restof their rivals is their snaring of around half of the600 million euro.

infected with the said virus causing liver disease, which in its ultimate stageoften turns cancerous (liver cirrhosis). That is deemed to

happen if the needle is not properly sterilized. How tat-toos are done-A tattoo is a permanent mark or

design made on your skin with pigmentsinserted through pricks into the skin's top

layer. Typically, the tattoo artist uses a hand-held machine that acts much like a

sewing machine, with one or moreneedles piercing the skin repeat-

edly. With every puncture, theneedles insert tiny inkdroplets. The process —which is done without anes-thetics — causes a smallamount of bleeding and

slight to potentially significant pain.-How they cause hepatitis? Tattoos area potential cause for spreading hepatitis B and C virus. "The main risk is ifthe equipment, which is the needle, is infected and not enough precautionis taken to prevent transmission. But it's not just the needle that can spreadthe virus. Needles are not the only things that can cause transmission ofthe hepatitis. The silent culprits are the expensive ink bottles in which theartist dips his needle time and again while doing the tattoo. So even if theyuse disposable syringes or fresh gloves, if an artist uses the same ink bot-tle for several clients, the chances of transmission of the virus increase. Now since these ink bottles are mostly imported, they generally don't usefresh bottles for every client. Explaining the science behind it, "Tattoo mak-ing involves pricking the needle deep into the dermis - the layer under theskin surface - which results in bleeding and the same needle is dipped intothe paint bottle which leads to transferring of Hepatitis B or C from infect-ed to another.Preventive measures to rescue yourself from hepatitis Tattooas you would any other medical procedure. You want a tattoo parlor to beat least as clean as your doctor's office. Ask to see the tools the artist willuse. The needles should be new, sterilized, and wrapped — no excep-tions. The ink should be in small pots meant for single-use and anythingthat touches your skin should not be reused. And the artist should weargloves. HO

Himmatwala is not Tamannah's B'wooddebut: Producer Salim Akhtar

According to Sajid Khan, his remake of the 1983 Jeetendra-Sridevi star-rer Himmatwalla, is actress Tamannah's Bollywood debut. At least that's

what the film's newly-released promos say. However, producer SalimAkhtar begs to differ. He claims Tamannah was the leading lady of a film

produced by him eight years ago titled Chand Sa Roshan Chehra thatwas released in 2003 amidst much fanfare. A miffed Akhtar has evenmoved court against the actress, who allegedly hasn't honoured her

contract with him that requires her to shell out 25 per cent of her earn-ings for five years to the producer. A furious Akhtar told TOI, "It was I who

introduced her to Hindi films, and neither she nor the makers of theremake of Himmatwalla are acknowledging that. Just because she went

on to become a big star in the south after doing Chand Sa RoshanChehra? Why do they lie so much in the film industry? She has just

changed the spelling of her name, which was earlier spelt as Tamanna, and dropped her surname Bhatia." Explaining how he discovered

Tamannah, Akhtar said, "She was my daughter's classmate at ManeckjiCooper School in Juhu.
