His love for life is reflected inthe vibrant colours of his paintings;he is a nature lover and lovespainting landscapes. There are nostark and dark shades to his
works, yet all this belies a painfultruth. Even if taking a few babysteps has not been possible forhim, his mobility has never beenan issue—he enjoys travelling,

nature bringing out the optimist inhim, with an even bigger smile.
If one talks about thehealth issues of RamakrishnanNarayanaswamy, it is only tohold him out as a fine example ofcheerfulness and positivity, to lendhope to those in similar situations. It is impossible to sympathize withhim because he has no grouseagainst life.
Orthopaedically-handicapped, suffering fromcerebral palsy, which hasrendered him without control overhis motor movements, RK, as helikes to call himself, is completelydependent on others for his dailyactivities. When schooling was
ruled out for him, he put his highIQ and keen eye for observationto use. Solving rubik cube puzzles, building structures with lego setsand moving chess coins were hischildhood pastimes.
With his body being sodisobedient, RK literally put hisbest foot forward, using his rightfoot to do it. His uncle, an

architect, paved way for hisbecoming an artist withoutrealizing that the eggshells hebought his teenage nephew topaint on, would one day helpbring out the creative person inhim. Colours attracted RK, thusbeginning his romance with paints, which continues even now at 47.
A stipend from the Mouthand Foot Painting ArtistAssociation is helping him to leada dignified life. RK has hadseveral solo exhibitions besidesgroup shows in Taiwan andSingapore. He is putting up ashow of his paintings at Bhavan’sBengaluru Kendra, acrylic oncanvas and water colours beingthe media. Landscapes, in bright
sunny hues, comprise a majorchunk of the exhibits, RK’scapturing of the famed scenicbeauty of Austria and Switzerlandalso being on display.
The exhibition will beinaugurated on May 19, at 5 pmby well-known artist S. G.Vasudev. Anu Jain, an artistwho brings alive nature in all itsglory in her water colours, will be the Guest of Honour.

AbhinandanaSamarambha to veteran freedomfighter H.S.Doreswamy on theoccasion of stepping into his 100th
year by none other than highlyrevered public figure, Justice N.Santosh Hegde, former justice ofthe Supreme Court and the equallyrespected Mr. Chiranjeev Singh, former ambassador to UNESCO.
His sharp quotes to the media, his fight for justice, ranging fromsocial to environmental issues, andhis entering his 100th year nowcontinue to keep freedom fighterH. S. Doreswamy in the news, for the right reasons. Vocal andforthright in his views, and asincere volunteer for public causes,
his open mind, optimism, enthusiasm and energy, propelledmore by will power at his age,are facets of his personality notcompletely visible.
One among the few livinglegends of the pre-independenceera and the Quit India movement,Mr. Doreswamy has in him ahundred years of life experiences, especially as a freedom fighter.Even as he completed hisgraduation, this fearless youngman got actively involved in theQuit India movement, and wasjailed along with his brother forover a year.
To bring to fore manyunknown facets of his public life, and the zeal with which ordinarypeople fought the British andsacrificed so much in their life,Bengaluru Bhavan has organizeda rare interactive session with thecenturion on May 1. The eventis not a talk-based programme;it is an informal interaction withMr. Doreswamy, where the publiccan put their queries to him.
Those interested inparticipating may please registertheir names at Bhavan before theevent. The programme is atKhincha auditorium of theBhavan, at 11am. - JRSri. H.S. Doreswamy

Kannada cinema came in for
some introspection last month, even while creating ripples withthe statement that the heroinesfor Kannada films had to be“imported” from Mumbai, despitea history to the contrary, whereheroines from the South includingfrom Karnataka had made it big inHindi cinema.
At a function at Bhavanlast month, to confer thePadmabhushan Dr. B. SarojaDevi National Award on multi-lingual star, Abhinaya SharadeJayanthi, senior actor andpolitician Ambarish bemoaned thatactresses from Mumbai whocould not utter a single dialogue in
Kannada, were being promotedin Kannada films. The excuse ofdearth of female talent amongKannadigas had resulted in denialof opportunities for local talent,he said.
In her award acceptancespeech, Jayanthi recalled theencouragement and support shereceived from Saroja Devi whenshe entered the film world. The latter reminisced that theirfriendship which began then, had continued over the decades, showing the camaraderie thatexisted among actors those days.
