Baldwin County Heritage

Museum’s Titan Tractor To

Be Featured At This Year’s County Fair

The museum’s restored 1911 International Harvester Titan or Type-D Tractor will be a featured attraction at this year’s County Fair in September. It is believed to be the only one in existence in Alabama, and one of only a dozen or so remaining in North America. This tractor is believed to be originally used in road work in Baldwin County during the early part of the last century. It later was used to operate a saw mill near the upper end of Fish River in the Silverhill area in 1920. It was donated to the museum by the Heidelberg family from Silverhill in 1991. It was then delivered to the BCHM and restored by local and snow-bird volunteers. Titan cranked in 1994 to the delight of these determined volunteers. Although it was known to have been started and operated on occasion, it has remained as a quiet attraction among the museum’s vintage farm equipment for the past ten years. The Titan will be transported and displayed under the auspices of the South Alabama Antique Tractor and Engine Club. Mr. Ronnie Carroll, the club’s president, and its membership share the belief that this year’s display of their vintage tractors and engines will definitely be enhanced with the inclusion of the colossal Titan Tractor, and be a special attraction for all those attending this years’ Baldwin County Fair.

ELUSIVE HUMILITYDid you hear about the man who was awarded a nice pin for being the most humble person in his church? The next Sunday they took it away from him for one simple reason---- because he wore it!

We don’t see many books on humility, because those who are qualified to write them don’t think that they are qualified, and the rest—well, thinking that they are qualified disqualifies them!

Yet the Scriptures do say that God resists the proud and arrogant, but gives His grace to the humble and broken. That being true, getting humility must be extremely important! I believe that hu-mility is just seeing things as they really are- that we are guilty sinners with no worthiness, but that we are the recipients of an unreasonable grace.

But don’t hold me up as an example or an expert on humility...as soon as I wear the pin, somebody will have to take it away!

So elusive is this quality of humility! Many years ago the fa-mous preacher H. A. Ironside, pastor of Moody Church in Chi-cago, was struggling with pride. Huge crowds came to hear him preach, and it “went to his head.” He sensed how wrong that was, so he tried so hard to become more humble. One day he rigged a big sandwich-board sign which said, “I am a fool for Christ”. He wore it all day and walked all over Chicago, as peo-ple pointed, whispered, and laughed. All day long he thought to himself, “Finally, I am going to learn to be humble!” Finally, exhausted at the end of the day, Dr. Ironside removed the sign from his shoulders. Immediately the thought came to him, “Not

many people in the whole city of Chicago could have done that”! Once again he felt himself swell with pride, and he knew that all his efforts had been wasted.

A few years ago I was in a pastors’ fellowship meeting on a Mon-day morning. Everyone was talking about a big scandal that had just occurred in one of the local churches. Some members of this church had done something really dumb. As a gag, they had hired a stripper to perform at a birthday party! It turned out to be quite embarrassing for everybody. They all hoped that the pastor would not find out about it, but of course, he did... on Sunday morn-ing. When the pastor finally did hear about it, he hit the ceiling! He gave these people a scathing rebuke, then resigned from the church on the spot, and walked out without even conducting the morning service!

As you can understand, this ministerial meeting was abuzz with gossip. Many opinions were expressed about whether we should “take our stand” against the church and the “guilty parties”, com-mend the pastor for “taking his stand”, or just what should we do. (By the way, be careful around people who are always “taking their stand.”)

There was a lot of talk. Nothing makes us more vocal than a situ-ation when we can talk about somebody who did something that we would “never” do. When the talk finally subsided, our host called on our director to lead in a prayer. We were all feeling quite superior and self-righteous that morning---until he prayed. I shall never forget his prayer.

“Lord, please have mercy upon my sinful, sorry self,” he began. “Dear God, you know that I fail you so much, so often, so deeply,

so carelessly, Lord! I am so sorry for the way I am! I know that it’s only because of your love and grace that a sinner like me could ever be forgiven and be your child. I am so ashamed of myself! Oh, please have mercy on me!”

Now, in case you may have missed it, I want to remind you that this man who was praying was in no way associated with the scandal we had been discussing. He was simply looking into his own heart and had found no room to criticize anybody else, and found no reason to feel superior.

Tears began to break out at that pastors’ meeting, as each of us began to pray similar prayers. And a strange man with nail prints walked into our meeting that day. It happened all because one man with stark, radical, genuine humility had dared to expose his heart in public prayer.

The gossip was over. We were finally “minding our own busi-ness”, which is the business of honesty and repentance concern-ing our own sin and unworthiness.

Humility... should it really be that hard to come by? If I will be just be honest, don’t I have plenty to be humble about? Can’t I just look within and begin to see how outrageous it is for me to become proud?

I have been told that the Greek Orthodox Church has a pre-scribed prayer to pray whenever another brother has sinned. It is the prayer of the publican in the temple: “God, be merciful unto ME, a sinner.”

Amen. And me too.

Good PleasureAs you move out into what God wants you to do, his energy will be at your disposal and you will be a partaker of his joy. His peace will fortify your thought life and he will give health and strength to your bones. His love shall be your constant portion. For God doesn’t ask you to labor in drudgery, for the work of God is a labor of love, for God is love. You’ll live by the motivation of his spirit. You will be partaker continually of his life. You will experience the warmth of his love and divine presence. Yes, he is in you and with you to do his good pleasure. The pleasures of the world are but for a moment, but God’s pleasures are everlasting. Unknown riches await your discovery and imagined joys your experience. As Paul, we need to learn to keep our physical bodies under proper control in order that the spirit may not in any way be restricted. As the Bible says, “the spirit warreth against the flesh and the flesh is ever at enmity with the spirit.” God is always with you so be not discouraged nor weary at heart but be encouraged in the Lord and you will reap much harvest. Yes, move out and move on and our God will take you farther and higher in him.

A Note From the EditorThe residents of our Gulf Coast communities always dis-play a resilience and resourcefulness in the face of adver-sity. With hurricane Isaac looming last week, we all found ways to secure our properties and businesses and lend a helping hand to friends, family, co-workers and fellow business owners. It is swift preparedness that allows us to all sit back and weather the storms that life is certain to bring.

When reflecting upon Isaac and those who were so quick to act in our area, I was reminded of my brother-in-law. Just a few short weeks ago my brother-in-law, Charlie, received a cancer diagnosis. Always being an optimistic and upbeat guy, it was immediately following the diag-nosis that Charlie designed a swift attack against the can-cer in his body. With the guidance of physicians, they iso-lated the cancer, devised a treatment plan and began his treatment as quickly as possible. This past week, Charlie left his job on his lunch break, received a treatment and returned to finish out the day’s work. I applaud Charlie, and his desire to continue to move forward even through a serious medical setback – it is through swift prepared-ness that he’s successfully weathering the storm at hand.

Wishing everyone a wonderful week,Audrey Chambers

¥ “Before I pluck my eyebrows, I rub on a bit of my granddaughter’s teething gel. She’s done teething and doesn’t need it anymore, but it

works well for me. Be very careful to apply, let dry and wash your hands before touching your eye any further!” -- M.L. in California

¥ When microwaving items of different sizes, arrange the largest parts toward the outside of the plate for more even cooking.

¥ Lemon juice mixed with coarse salt makes an inexpensive copper cleaner.

¥ “When going fishing and you are only bring-ing a couple of lures, use an old, empty pill container. It holds them well, and you won’t be poked.” -- D.B. in Minnesota

¥ When figuring the cost of moving yourself versus using a service, be sure to consider the cost of your time and your health. And be cer-tain that you are able to drive the moving van if you rent a large truck.

¥ If you don’t keep a lot of food in your freezer, why not fill large gallon-size zipper-top bags with ice cubes? You will always have plenty of ice on hand, and your freezer won’t have to work as hard to keep the items in it frozen.

We the people of the United States . . .

WE DID BUILD THIS!

THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA IS STRONG

Because we the people . . .

. . . have not forgotten that every one of us has the right to work hard and be successful. Success is not something that should be given to those who refuse to work for it. Success is not free or a government program. Success is for those who are willing to work hard, be dedicated, and overcome obstacles.

The United States of America is successful because hard working Americans are successful.

ÒHard work is the price we must pay for success. I think you can accomplish anything if youÕre willing to pay the price.Ó Ñ Vince Lombardi
