Women a significant part of local economyJoshua EstabrooksPioneer Staff

Up and down the Columbia Valley, women are continuing to make up a significant portion of the local business community.

This trend is not just a local anomaly, as statistics from B.C. Stats indicate that more than 35 per cent of all business owners in the province are women, which brings the province in at third place when compared with the rest of the country. The national average is ap-proximately 34 per cent.

Locally, there are currently around 170 businesses registered with the Columbia Valley Chamber of Com-merce, and according to Visitor Centre Manager, Jackie Lysak, there are a huge number of women involved in

these businesses. “In the Columbia Valley we have a huge amount of

women who have their own businesses, whether it’s one they run from home or a storefront. They offer a huge amount not only to their families but also to the com-munity,” Ms. Lysak said.

“I personally have over 250 email contacts of women who are in some sort of business from Canal Flats to Spillimacheen.”

A lot of women, even if they aren’t out in the fore-front, are doing a lot of important work behind the scenes, like bookkeeping, scheduling, or ordering supplies, which allows many small businesses to survive, she added.

Since 1995, the average annual growth for self-em-ployed women in the province has been 3.8 per cent, compared with 3.2 per cent for men. The proportion of

B.C., business owners who are women has increased by over eight per cent since 1980.

The Columbia Valley Chamber of Commerce has a number of ways of supporting our female entrepreneurs, including organized networking luncheons, and a new special series of seminars that are specific to women in businesses.

The seminars started in November and are held on the fourth Monday of every month. They touch on everything from using social media effectively to topics like personal growth and goal setting.

So three cheers to the many, many women who continue to live and work in the Columbia Valley. Their contributions, both economically and socially, help make the area such a great place to live, work and play.

Thank you ladies! Keep up the good work!

Approximately 25 years ago, my husband John and I started High Country Properties Management Ltd. Today I am proud to say that our company represents many of the finest vacation homes in the Columbia Valley.

With our partners and exceptional team at HCP, our company manages and rents vacation homes in the Invermere, Radium, Fairmont, Panorama, Golden, Kimberley and Fernie areas.

We have hosted many happy guests in our valley and work closely with the local golf courses and ski hills. We also have a large referral program with other local businesses such as spas, restaurants and retailers, to name just a few.

We hold a firm belief that we live in one of the “Finest Places on Earth” and strive to welcome all visitors to the Columbia Valley.

I have always said that our valley reminds me of a Norman Rockwell painting. In the winter when I see families skating, skiing, curling, playing hockey and walking on the lake, I see real life. I see good families, good friendships and good memories unfolding in front of my eyes.

And that is only one season in our beautiful year-round valley. Of course, the warmer spring and summer months bring golfing, hiking, biking, kayaking, canoeing, sailing, waterskiing, walking, dining, shopping, reading, resting, visiting, swimming, family BBQs and much more!

This fall, our company will be celebrating 25 years of serving this incredible valley. We are happy to provide nothing less than the best vacation experience for our guests and worry-free management for our homeowners.

We know the Kootenay Rockies, so leave the planning to us. We live and play here every day and can provide you with insightful information.

I have always had an interest in Health and Wellness. I am particularly interested in preventative medicine and living a healthy lifestyle.

As my family has its share of serious health concerns, I see the importance of looking after ourselves in all aspects of body, mind and spirit. This is, in part, what brought me to USANA Health Sciences over 10 years ago.

USANA manufactures the highest quality nutritional supplements possible. They are pharmaceutical grade and FDA approved and include Dietary Supplements, paraben-free SENSE Skin Care, Health and Nutrition Products and one of my personal favourites: the REV energy drink.

Many of these products are endorsed and used by Olympic and professional athletes and sports teams. USANA’s products are also recommended by a growing number of doctors and other health professionals.

The company uses only finest grade ingredients and every product is rigorously tested for potency, bioavailability, purity and uniformity. If you are currently using any kind of supplement such as vitamins, minerals, calcium, glucosamine or Vitamin D, I believe these products will be of interest to you.

USANA is quickly becoming a household name. Over time I have been using the USANA products, replacing similar products that I was already using with ones I now much prefer, and know are of much higher quality.

I am looking forward to the USANA Annual Convention this year and to hear the keynote speakers Dr. Christian Northrup and Dr. Helmet OZ. I would welcome the opportunity to explore these products with you and to explain what makes USANA different.

Please contact me for more information, a personal or group presentation, to purchase a product, or if you would like to book a ”SENSE Facial Party” for you and your friends.
